Guardians of the Galaxy James gunn fired!!!

I would agree that James should have been less confrontational given his relatively high profile position. But this should have been an apology followed by us all moving on wiser than we were before. Not a firing.

Yeah. The more I think about this, the more I wonder if there wasn’t something simmering behind the scenes — maybe creative differences over his script — and Disney used the tweets as a convenient excuse to move on. That’s just speculation on my part, but the whole affair just seems off to me.

Not necessarily something between Gunn and Disney. Maybe something between Feige and Disney? And this was used to send a message to Marvel to show that Disney can get rid of one of their big guns at the drop of a hat, so Marvel better keep in line.

No, rape and paedophila are not a joke. Not funny. End of story.

I don't understand how you can think comedy is forum for that.

Need I remind anyone that Herbert the Pervert is a series regular on a show with the following accolades:

Critics' Choice Awards
2012 Best Animated Series Nominated
2014 Best Animated Series Nominated

People's Choice Awards
2007 Favorite Animated Comedy Nominated
2008 Nominated
2009 Nominated

Primetime Emmy Awards
2009 Outstanding Comedy Series Nominated

And this one is kinda interesting:
In 2016, a New York Times study of the 50 TV shows with the most Facebook Likes found that like other satirical comedies, Family Guy "is most popular in cities. The show's popularity was more correlated with support for Hillary Clinton than any other show"

And of all the criticism and controversy it has received literally NONE of it has been for poking fun at pedophilia.

Just because YOU don't find dark humor funny, does not mean your huge sweeping statements about what is considered a joke are gospel.

I think Herbert the Pervert is a ridiculously stupid character. I just want to say, it stands to reason millions of people are out there laughing at the absurdity. Apologies to anyone out there who read this who have been victims or know someone who is a victim of sex crimes, but comedy is just tragedy + time.

Different people. Different situations. Different companies. Different standards.

I have never watched more than commercials promoting FAMILY GUY.....it just never clicked with me....and now that you continually point out that it gleefully has a pedo character I'm extremely glad that I have never watched or promoted the show in any shape of form.

Too bad George Carlin isn't around anymore

Would be interesting to hear his insight in today's easily offended society

I really don't care about your opinions. I was responding to one dudes claim about "what human beings are allowed to consider funny."

Family Guy had its moments but was otherwise a really stupid television show (with or without Herbert the Pervert). But CLEARLY a large portion of our species likes the show. AND FINDS IT FUNNY.

:whatever:

Excellent points all around, the bolded is a profound statement I hadn't heard before.

Like I said earlier, either of all it is okay or none of it is okay. If we want to live in a world with Herbert the Pervert and make light of something awful like pedophilia, then we must also be able to satire race, sex, gender and everything else. No jokes, no WORDS... can be off limits. Context has to matter.

It is interesting though to think that there really hasn't ever been a vocal group of people that have a problem with Herbert, but DO have a problem with Apu all of a sudden.

If we can make light of a pedophile, surely we can make light of an accent.

I don't know what this Herbert the Pervert show is and have never heard of it.

But how many people either with children of their own, or who have nieces and nephews actually find "jokes" about child rape or pedophillia funny? You'd think it would be too close to home and far too unsettling and uncomfortable.

Maybe someone who doesn't have any young family relations of their own might enjoy this sort of stuff and think it's a prime subject for mining.

Way to be open-minded. :o

Anyone remember Morty and King Jellybean? That was played for laughs right?

The Aristocrats. An entire movie revolving around an incest joke. A cast of over one hundred comedians, including Whoopie Goldberg, Drew Carey, Sarah Silverman and Robin Williams. Who should be dug up from the grave and punished retroactively!

Robin Williams made plenty of pedophilia jokes.

I guess we'll just have to curse his memory too.

Way I see it, this is two fold. Gunn has been a Holier than Thou *****ebag on Social Media for ages now. Openly adding fuel to the fire to countless online lynch mobs and if this was someone else, yes he would have a pitchfork in his hand. His tweets regarding Roseanne Barr confirms that.

However... seriously? These are ten year old tweets. Long before Twitter was the toxic wasteland it is today of Orwellian think-police twerps running it. I have certainly said stupid things in the past (...and no doubt will again). So have you. We are all human. Nobody is perfect. This think-mob on Social Media will not stop until someone who gets ganged up on winds up killing themselves - over some trivial thing they said off the cuff. Just you watch.

Yes these were truly skin-crawling things to say on Gunn's part. And while it might make you question the man behind closed doors, they were just stupid jokes for Christ's sake. And Disney isn't exactly an angel given their past associations and those they continue to hand $25M paychecks to on a regular basis. Hello, Johnny Depp.

I sincerely hope this blows back in Disney's face.
Isn't this a contradiction and the problem with putting this on social media?

I think a lot of people are missing a significant point....

There is no law that says - You can not make a rape, pedophilia, or incest joke.

There is no law that says - you will go to jail to jail if you make such a joke.

BUT.....there are plenty of companies that have rules that say you can't do such things or you will be reprimanded and or fired.

The police have not arrested James Gunn with plans to put him on trial. The COMPANY he worked for fired him.

Showing that other companies have allowed such things does not change the fact....he wasn't working for a company that allowed it.

And saying that Disney may have allowed it in the past only points out the fact....attitudes on the acceptance of these type comments have changed drastically in the last couple of years. Having allowed it years ago does not mean that they can't change their rules and not accept it now.

Many things that were acceptable and tolerated years ago are not acceptable or tolerated today. Things change.

What is the comparison here? That there is a character who is a pedophilia, and played as such. Where as on twitter Gunn made jokes about committing pedophilia repeatedly? How is that the same thing?

Also when something is scripted, everyone knows what they are getting into. That is important imo. Because Gunn doing this on his own time, on twitter, changes that dynamic. Do you think he could have had Groot molest a child in a GotG movie if that is what Gunn wanted for a joke? I think we all know how Disney would have answered that.

And if Mr. Gunn were making these "jokes" while under Disney's employ, this may make sense. But this isn't the case. It's retroactive punishment from a time before he signed his contract.

If the Mouse is going to be consistent, Whoopie Goldberg should be dumped from The View for her participation in The Aristocrats. Seth McFarlane should be shown the door as well after the acquisition closes. Either that or realize firing folks for comments made before they were hired and subsequently disavowed is a bad policy.

Gunn was foolish for not cleaning up his Twitter feed. He had years to do it, and since GOTG definitely when he hit the big time. Why would it not occur to him that these would come back to bite him one day?

He was foolish for acting like an obnoxious prick on twitter and being antagonistic to the point where people went looking into his past.

Well that too, but if he wanted to act like that, he should've made sure he had no skeletons in his own closet, especially if someone wanted to give him a taste of his own medicine (which was very likely since he was inciting people to look into other people's pasts).

Do you think Gunn told them he did this stuff? Showed them the tweets and then they hired him?

I've been saying the 2 main points of this posts over and over. I don't understand how people don't get it. And I know it's not just kids saying this, it's adults. How do they not realize how corporate dealings/being in the workforce like this works

He probably should have, but I maintain that if they were intended as jokes and he has since apologized and given interviews about how he's changed as a person, then he may have felt he had nothing to hide or was in the clear from something written a decade ago. It does make him seem a tad hypocritical though by inciting others to look into people's past. Everyone can change.

Seriously, if he were going to be fired for anything you could make a much more legitimate argument for his behavior on twitter the last handful of months then those stupid jokes. Who knows, perhaps that was the reason and the jokes served as convenient cover.

Does anyone think they wanted to get rid of Gunn? They had him deliver a script, prep vol. 3, all in secret they wanted to fire him? How much logic is there to that?

I think it is very simple. He makes movies intended for families, at Disney. Kids are a huge part of the audience for Disney, as are women. He made a lot of jokes about raping both children and women. He apparently weathered one storm back in 2012, Horn and Iger didn't want to have to explain this to anyone, especially as it now shines a light on everything Gunn has ever done. So they decided to fire him. It does not seem complicated at all, nor is there some big conspiracy.
