Guardians of the Galaxy James gunn fired!!!

He has it there. If you think any studio will allow him to have hiring/firing power over those that actually run the corporations, that is crazy. He'd have to be chairman of the company, in which case, he isn't making movies at that point.

If Feige declares himself a free agent he will be able to write his own ticket, including a contract that gives him control over all personnel decisions at his studio. Paramount put Mel Gibson (and Mark Wahlberg!) in a movie. I doubt they would have a problem with Mr. Gunn.

Let me repeat. No one is going to do that, because that means those that run the company can't hire or fire people. If he wants t go back to Paramount, he can go back to Paramount. But if you think he will get control over all hiring and firing decisions, you are mistaken. This would be like a GM of a team having power over the owner. That is never going to happen.

Kevin Feige has had free reign at Marvel Studios after extracting himself from Perlmutter. This is the first MCU personnel decision that didn't come from him. With Feige's contract up next year, this is very bad news.

No. Kevin Feige reports to and obeys Alan Horn.

And like I said, Feige has access to all these characters now. Unless he's getting out of the comic book movie business altogether, which would be like Jordan walking away to play baseball.

Honestly if he was just doing schtick on twitter and trying to get a few laughs maybe he should have run it by a few friends or his wife before posting.

He's divorced. Was married to Jenna Fischer from The Office. I just looked up to see if he ever remaried and he never did. The tweets coincide with his divorce so maybe that's a reason other than the molestation that led him into that dark place?

Bobcat Goldthwait had some thoughts on his Instagram...

I love @jamesgunn. He’s a loyal friend, super talented, passionate and kind. I wanted to say something, here it is:

Dear @disney, I would hate for you to come off as hypocritical so I’m suggesting that you remove my voice from an attraction that’s coming to your park. It’s called WORLD OF COLOR – VILLAINOUS, and I reprise the role of Pain, a role I played in HERCULES. You see here’s the deal, years ago I made a lot of sarcastically shocking and offensive jokes. Many that I’m embarrassed about now, and I’d hate to make you guys look bad seeing that I’m openly critical of the president and his administration, and you seem to be taking your lead from some of his radical fringe supporters. I think James Woods may have recorded a voice for this new attraction, too.

Why not check out some of his whacky past tweets?! They’re a hoot! For the record I do stand with survivors of sexual abuse and I was wondering if you guys are still making money off of your movie POWDER? Asking for a friend. Thanks, Bobcat

Ouch, that’s gotta sting.

It begins. The thing is I'm actually seeing a lot of of women supporting Gunn online also. The vibe from s lot of his peers are it's s smear campaign due to political stuff.

Wow, it sucks that the actors are being dragged into it.

With social media getting people in trouble or losing their jobs, its better to let their publicists or social media managers handle their accounts.

Did James Gunn tell people to back off because he really should? He already said he accepted the Disney's decision didn't he?

Where is he going to do that? In a interview and get tarred and feathered with questions like "are you a pedophile" or on the twitter account he no longer uses?

I say let there be chaos and see where it ends up. People have a right to voice themselves, whether it be supporting Gunn's firing, or asking Disney to remove their voice from a ride in protest of it. The door has been opened both ways.

I think as a society, we do need to have a real discussion about social media responsibility and this new trend of mob rule. I don't say this just in the case of James Gunn, but as a general point.

Did he say he no longer uses Twitter? He made tweets responding to Disney's firing.

Yep. Though what qualifies as mob rule should also be considered.

Yeah, Twitter is pretty bad about it. I tweeted, which I rarely do, that I don't condone what Gunn wrote, yet it seems weird that people higher up don't suffer the same fate. Immediately got bombarded with "you must be a pedo too" responses via the hashtag.

In all honesty, I respect that these forums haven't devolved into the same.

Sucks that a lot of people here are incapable of acknowledging even bad jokes are just jokes, but I'm happy to say I haven't yet been straight up called a pedo.

Someone here made a comparison between Gunn's tweets and holocaust jokes. And, oh yes. Holocaust jokes are ****ed up. But uh... Taika Waititi (fan favorite for taking over the franchise) is currently making a comedy movie where he plays Hitler. I plan on going to see it and having a laugh at the ethnic genocide of millions when it comes out. ¯\_(o_o)_/¯

I think this is the beginning of the end of it. You're starting to see now that a huge can of worms is being opened and deep down I don't think anyone wants to go down that path. I suspect the over the next few years SJW crowd will transform and evolve into a more "Hey man let me just be me" type crowd.

The SJW's needed to lose one of their own before they could see how ridiculous and foolish they were behaving.

You do realize JoJo Rabbit is about a kid who is a Hitler youth, who meets a young Jewish girl who challenges his views right? The Hitler he hangs out with played by Waititi is in his imagination and reinforces the awful ideas, which he starts to reexamine through his relationship with the young girl. Waititi has talked about how he is happy to piss off racists with the movie. Why did you remove all context from it?

I agree with you mostly, I think this is getting out of hand. I just don't see how you can make a distinction between this and what happened to Roseanne. If you believe Gunn was unjustly fired then why not Roseanne? Is it just about the amount of time that's passed?

I can ask the same questions can't I? What about Roseanne's comments were relevant to anything have to do with her work? What does firing her accomplish? People make mistakes right?

For me the main thing is the fact that nothing has changed since Gunn was hired. If Disney didn't want a weirdo working for them, they shouldn't have hired one. Disney let the guy make two movies before they cared about those Tweets.

It would be a different case if Gunn had swept something under the rug and deliberately hid it from Disney. Let's say Gunn had a criminal record, but he signed on to Disney under a fake identity. I would completely understand firing him over that. But that's not the case. This is more equivalent to hiring a criminal under his real name, failing to do a background check (or ignoring it), and later getting mad that he has a criminal record.

There was no way for anyone to know what Roseanne was going to say in the future before hiring her. It's scary for a company to have an unpredictable person working for them. Gunn was not unpredictable. From what I gather, his behavior was consistent while working for Disney.

This article sums it up perfectly:

Gunn was hired in 2013 (GotG was released in 2014, so he had to start working on it in 2012 or 2013)......The #METOO movement became a force in October of 2017 (4 years later)......the #METOO movement has made many people, companies, organizations, etc take a hard look at and react to things said in the past that were previously ignored.

Disney shouldn't have had to wait for a movement to come along to learn that Gunn said things worth firing him over. If they did their research, they would have have known it from the start and not hired him in the first place. I don't think we should use the #MeToo movement to excuse the fact that Disney didn't do their research.

Right now I think the only way to force Disney hire James Gunn back for GOTG 3 is if all the actors of MCU, including RDJ, jointly write a letter to Bob Iger to plead him to change his mind. GOTG cast doesn't have enough clout, but people like RDJ and Feige do. The question is, will they be willing to make this issue the hill that they die on? Disney won't do it voluntarily, but if it looks as if they had no choice then they might change their mind. And it'd have to be after the Fox deal is finished and Disney doesn't need constantly worrying about it.
