Comics JMS and The Good He's Done

the only thing he did that i disagree with is peter unmasking (and probably sins past...) but other then that hes a good writer. and the peter unmasking probably wasnt just his decision.

Fair enuf.

I reckon the last 2 years of ASM have been pure crap.

Sins Past, Skin Deep, The Other

Thats a hell of a bad lineup, in addition we also have a massive lack of classic Spidey rogues, extreme amount of mysticysm and magic, and of course,my personal favorite, Doctor Strange stars in Amazing Spider-Man 500. The sheer amount of follies he has made definatly outweigh, making MJ and May into more rounded characters, something that has, and that should've been done before. And the fact that he is still working, on two of the biggest books at Marvel right now, is just testament to the bull****, with Quesada and his constant hardon over celebrity writers.

His sheer ignorance over simple continuity is baffling, JMS if you don't know something, than look it up! It's small things but they get annoying because they are so simple to look up. No, Gwen was never awake when the Goblin killed her, Uncle Ben died in Aunt May's arms, not outside the house, and Osborn definatly did not inject himself with the Goblin serum.

Add to the fact that he likes to rewrite continuity to make it fit certain stories. Did you know that Peter actually picked on another kid when he was younger to keep Flash off his back? Or how about when Gwen went to Europe to have Osborn's kids?

So in conclusion, the man is a hack, and it is a damn travesty that he has two of the top Marvel books right now, and brilliant stories written by someone such as Dan Slott and Tom Defalco, are plauged with low sales and cancellation. :(

Of course, but that’s all anything here is- someone’s opinion.
It's worth noting tho, that a lot of my sentiments are also popular opinion.

Yeah well you pretty much got it there.
His inability to understand continuity and him not 'getting' PP/Spidey are two pretty frigging big areas of fault. The day he leaves as writer of ASM I will throw a frikkin party.

Btw I (and I'm sure others too) don't particularly like going on about how much JMS is teh suck, but it's just the state of the game. One day he will be gone and there will be nothing to moan about.

not true. there will always be someone somewhere for no reason at all to bring up JMS, they'll most likely say he's the worst this in that in history. what if spidey never gets better (i'm sure he will) people will be like JMS started it. what if someone, a writer, used one of JMS's idea's? someone will say, this guy is a hack to use such and such in a story. my point is someone will ALWAYS be out there to moan.

Honestly, everything up to Sins Past was pretty damn good. Plus, we all agree the Hydra arc was good stuff.

However, everything else is SO DAMN BAD that it negates most of that, which is a damn shame, because I was REALLY getting excited about Spider-Man again at that time.

Unfortunately for him, he IS the one who "started it". Spidey's has a slew of bad writing since Sins Past. Not just iffy writing...BAD writing.

so you're telling my you can't find ONE good thing? ... whatever...

John Romita Jr. was a good thing. But his work wasn't JMS' doing at all, now was it?

The Hydra arc wasn't bad writing. And Paul Jenkins had some really good stories when he was doing Spectacular Spider-Man. And, so far, the unmasking arc in Amazing has been handled well, although it's only been one issue.

JMS needs Romita Jr. ever since Jazzy Johnny Junior left the book JMS pooped all over himself. :o

The entire 'coming home' arc with Morlun and Ezekiel. They just shoulda killed ezekiel and left morlun dead then. sigh... oh well. I stopped reading SM during this arc but have since returned and bought a copy of the trade 2 days ago for almost half price (bent cover). :) Goooooood stuff.

What happened in Skin Deep? And the hydra arc. You're all starting to talk about it but i dont know what happened. It cannot have been as bad as sins past or the other, cos i've barely heard of these things before.

Skin Deep For me, Skin Deep was about a very contrived and unimaginative villain coupled with some of the worst characterization I've ever seen in a spidey comic. I'm always surprised that it doesn't get "more" negative feedback.

The villain, we are shown, was a former classmate of Pete's. Essentially we learn that Pete was a complete a@# as a kid as he would use this "slightly geekier" than Pete student to defer the "jock bullying" from himself to this kid.....in one instance actually joining in tormenting this young Charlie....just ridiculous characterization.

Flash ahead to the present......Charlie is a wannabe scientist who develops a "super soldier suit" that essentially is some sort of metal alloy. He comes to Pete for a recommendation for Tony Stark. Without even looking at the experiment (and knowing full well from Charles' description it was dangerous), Pete, due the guilt he felt from how he treated Charlie in the past, blindly endorses Charlie as does Tony Stark blindly dedicate 100,000 dollars to the experiment.

Pete later learns from Stark Enterprises that Charlie lied about Pete's invovement in the experiment and goes to confront Charlie. His worse nightmare comes true when he realizes the metals Charlie is working with are extremely unstable and volatile. Instead of Pete trying to shut down the project or at least warning someone, he gives Charlie 24 hours to make it right..."knowing full well the likelihood of an explosion and collaterol damage"

Long story short, it explodes, Charlie becomes a Molten Man rip off, and kills one of the jocks that teased him all those years ago as well as burns down Pete's home (One of the reasons he now resides at Stark Towers)

This story had little to no redeeming quality and admittedly I may have gotten some points incorrect. It was a while since I read it and I certainly didn't read it again :)

I'll give you a Hydra breakdown later if someone hasn't already done it

^ i act read the first issue of that somewhere (didnt remember it was Skin Deep) come to think of it. I thought the 24-hours point was correct - thats just stupid, but pete joining in the bullying i thought was realistic. If you've ever been bullied you'd know the lengths some people will go to stop it. Anyway thanx for that  Much appreciated

No problem.....and I do understand how two people with different upbringings could view what Pete did differently. I wasn't bullied growing up nor was I a bully.....but I do remember the bullies as being nothing more than cowards......I guess I would expect better from Peter Parker knowing full well how bad it feels.

^guess so. i wasnt really bullied after i hit about 15, 16 and never really had it that bad, but you here of people comitting suicide and stuff its that bad. If pete really was the biggest geek in the school then i could see the sort of pressure he was under when a new uber-geek showed up

Skin Deep really was a bad arc, I couldnt even finish reading it. I bought the 2nd or 3rd issue and didnt even get to the end of that before picking up a different comic.

I think that what you have to take into consideration, is that JMS' last FOUR story arcs on ASM have all been "event" driven.

-Skin Deep: A prelude to The New Avengers story, written to move Pete, MJ and May into Stark's Tower.

-New Avengers: Written to tie-in with Bendis' inclusion of Spidey into the NA.

-The Other: Who was the real culprit of this travesty? JMS or Joe Q?

-The War At Home: Spidey's tie-in to Civil War.

Even Sins Past was Joe Q's idea, wasn't it?!

So if you ask me... JMS gets a bad wrap. In my opinion he's just been rolling with the punches. Trying to tell the best story he can, out of the "event" driven mandate he's given.

Sins Past(I <3 Gwen:() and the Other sucked really bad...so did the Adventures of Tony Stark and his pal Spidey-Man. Other then that he's done some really good stories.

Sins Past was JMS's idea except he wanted Pete as the father. Joe Q didn't like that because it would make Pete less young and responsible or something, (I guess because he had kids) so he wanted Osborn as the father instead.

Edit: Half way to 3,000, Woohoo!

I forgot about skin deep....that was real bad too. Thanks alot guys for reminding me.

The skin deep storyline was boring and not very well written.

bad spider-man writing started years ago, mid clone saga. JMS just provided us with a break, as did the boring but "alright" paul jenkins, before it got right back on track with rubbishy writing. dont you agree?
