Gremlins and The Howling director Joe Dante's latest picture hasn't built up a lot of buzz State-side yet. Let's hope this brand new clip changes all that. Because his new picture, The Hole, seems a return to his 80s scares.

Here's the official synopsis:

Life couldn't possibly get worse, or so thought 17 year old Dane and his 10 year old brother Lucas, when their single mother Susan uproots them from New York City to the sleepy little town of Bensonville. For Dane the only exciting thing about their new town is the beautiful girl next door, Julie. With Susan spending more and more time at work, Dane and Lucas are left unattended to explore the depths of their eerie new residence.

With Dane paying more attention to Julie, he has far less time and patience for his little brother. But then everything changes when they find a sinister bottomless hole under a locked trap door in the basement. As the brothers experiment with the hole they realize that the cold pit goes on forever. They drop a nail and never hear it hit bottom. They lower a flashlight and a video camera and they get consumed by the darkness. Hoping for some answers about the houses past, Dane and Lucas bring Julie in on their new discovery. When the hole is exposed, evil is unleashed. With strange shadows lurking around every corner and past nightmares coming to life, the trio will have to come face to face their darkest fears to put an end to The Hole.

As of right now, The Hole doesn't have a US release date set, but it is opening in the UK on Sept. 24th.

Glad to see Dante's still around and making movie. The 'Burbs, Innerspace, Explorers and Gremlins 1&2 were some of my favorite movies growing up.

This looks pretty cool, I hope it gets a US/Canadian release.

i just realized this will be his first movie without the late great Jerry Goldsmith not doing the music for it :(.

it was Jerry's action packed (Innerspace, Small Soldiers) and sometimes whimsical (like in Gremlins 1 and 2, Loony Tunes Back In Action), comedic ('burbs, Matinee) scores that made Dante's films so much fun as well as the story/characters etc. I hope the guy that does The Hole does a good job, but he has BIG shoes to fill :(.

glad to finally see dante making movies again, perhaps an era of good 89's style movies is in our future.

I've seen the trailr for this. And for some reason it reminds me of The Gate. Anybody ever see that movie?

epic title fail... haha

"When the hole is exposed, evil is unleashed." lol

This was a pretty good flick. Creepy too. That damn clown doll.

I wonder why it hasn't got a US release date yet.

I have never heard of The Hole before, but I imagine that it will be perfect for the 3D format... I mean, it's a freaking hole! In 2D, it would just look like a circle, but in 3D it's a freaking hole that looks like you can actually fall into it...

I saw this last Halloween at the AFI Film Festival in Hollywood. Thought it was a lot of fun.

lol joint is extra hilarious. The title was the first thing I noticed before the blurb about the film. I kept thinking about it as I read. So if it came out in September already, do you think that it'll eventually come state side? Hopefully with a different title font.
