John Malkovich will square off against Josh Brolin in "Jonah Hex," the Warner Bros. adaptation of the DC Comics property that begins production in April.Legendary Pictures has joined the project as co-financier and co-producer.

Malkovich will play Turnbull, a wealthy Southern plantation owner whose son is killed by Union soldiers during the Civil War. He blames Hex, a former confederate soldier-turned-hardened bounty hunter and gunslinger. Jimmy Hayward ("Horton Hears a Who") is directing the script by "Crank" scribes Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor. Mad Chance's Andrew Lazar is producing with Weed Road's Akiva Goldsman.

Malkovich, most recently seen in "Burn After Reading" and "Changeling," is currently presiding over the Mexico opening of "The Good Canary," a Zack Helm-penned play that Malkovich directed. The play, which bowed in France, was translated into Spanish, and Diego Luna is starring in the feature.

I think it's time for a Jonah Hex board :D

Yea maybe the mods should do that, though its their call there. And cool news about malkovich as for the character he is playing i dont know anything about it so i dont know if he is the right fit.

He is 100% the right fit. As for the Hex forum, I'm working on it ;)

If he "gets into" this role (as he usually doesn't) this will be amazing.

It will be a joke if he just plays himself.

When did Josh become the Hex? I thought Jane was set to play him?

A few months ago. Jane wanted to play him, but was never signed or anything.

I'm sorry but Thomas Jane, as much as I like him, is literally the new Christopher Lambert, if I had to judge the movies that he's in now.

That's so funny you saying that, Oct...because he looks an awful lot like Lambert in the face...uncanny!

Yea brolin been on board since dec i nov/dec range. And yes jane wanted the role but never tested for the original directors who backed out and then brolin was signed. Nice to see we do have so far one dc film rolling in a few months. I hope gl does too and we get official word on campbell directing and leads for the film.

Nice casting with John Malkovich! Turnbull is a glorious bastard in the script, and while I was thinking of a more brutish figure like Ian McShane (I know, too obvious, damn you Deadwood!), an on-form Malkovich could pull the role off beautifully.

Seems like I remember an interview back when he turned down Green Goblin that he said he didn't do comic book movies. Has someone told him that Jonah Hex is a comic book movie?

More importantly, I think he'd be great for the role. If the director can do his job correctly, and the writers can do theirs right, we are in for one hell of a good comic book movie.

Jonah Hex will be a Western, though. No dressing up in costumes etc. that Malkovich probably wanted no part of.

With the utter CRAP he HAS done (and the very silly costumes he HAS worn) in recent years, I'd actually be surprised if he still thought himself above comic book movies.

Geez, I didnt know people were so down on the John!

The script must be good for both actors such as Brolin and Malkovich to join. Either that or they loved the idea and plot and maybe look for it they baught into it. Like a Sin City type of thing. One of the reasons why all those actors did that film waas because of the look of it, just the world.

I'm not down on John Malkovich at all. Great actor. But it cannot be denied he's been in some prime stinkers in recent years. Changeling and Burn After Reading have seen something of a return to form for him.

Now that he is in one, probably not :oldrazz:

Anyone think Brolin hand picked the director? Brolin was had a lot to do with getting John Malkovich on the project after that interview he did a few months ago.

Everyone thinks that, and in the other Hex thread, Brolin himself more or less confirms it.

yea that was most likely what happened. Also hey lobo whats the word on a hex catagory yet?

Yeah, it won't get too much traffic, but we still need one pretty soon.

The boss man said not yet, we've got bigger fish to fry first.
