Jimmy Hayward, who directed the animated "Horton Hears a Who!" will make his live-action debut with "Jonah Hex," the Warner Bros. western based on the DC Comics character.

Josh Brolin is attached to star in the film, which previously had Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor ("Crank") on board as directors. The duo, who also wrote the script, bowed out over creative differences in November. The studio, which hopes to put the movie into production in March or April, went on a fast-track search, putting together a short list that included such names as Andy Fickman and McG before narrowing it down to Hayward.

The character of Hex, known for having the right side of his face disfigured and wearing a Confederate army uniform, was a rough-and-tumble gunslinger and part-time bounty hunter whose adventures always ended in blood. One incarnation of his comic book series saw the Western genre combined with supernatural elements, and it's this aspect that was featured in Neveldine and Taylor's script. The studio will likely keep the script, though it's expected that Hayward will put his stamp on it.

Andrew Lazar's Mad Chance and Akiva Goldsman's Weed Road are producing.

Hayward, repped by UTA and manager Jason Grode, began his career as an animator on the Canadian TV series "ReBoot" before becoming a member of the Pixar family, where he worked on such films as "Toy Story," "A Bug's Life," "Toy Story 2," "Monsters, Inc." and "Finding Nemo." He also was involved in Fox and Blue Sky's animated film "Robots."

Hayward made his directorial debut with 2008's "Horton," which grossed $154.5 million at the domestic boxoffice.

So what do you think? March, May or June 2010 release?

We went from Neveldine/Taylor, the two guys who directed the most original action film since A Fistfull of Dollars to a guy who did a Dr. Zeus cartoon? This guy better cowboy the f*** up (No pun intended) because my expectations have just dropped.

anything is better than Lexi Alexander, in my opinion...

I'll hold my reservations for now,as this guy may suck, but my opinion still stands.

Glad to see the studio is taking this project seriously.

You're implying Crank was comparable to A Fistfull of Dollars? Not even close.

Not to mention Neveldine/Taylor directed the horrific Pathology. A repulsive movie if there ever was one.

i read about this earlier today. Nice to hear the project isnt totally dead like many thought it probably was going to be. We shouldnt knock this director guy so what his only other film was a cgi toon kid film. We dont know anything else about the guy and his likes/interests. Maybe he will do very well with the character and keeps it close to source material.

He's also worked as story consultant for Robots and additional story material for Toy Story 2.

Hayward is an odd choice to direct Jonah Hex, I thought for sure it'd be on McG's radar.

Interesting. I hope they keep Neveldine and Taylor's script.

While I am all about giving people chances, at this point, I'm inclined not to care until I see something that inclines me to care.

Im hopeful. Horton was good, but totally different.

Interesting. Hope they go with the Neveldine/Taylor Script. He does seem an odd choice for Hex.

yea hopefully the script will stay if they really want to push this to production in the next 1-3 months.

Yeah, agreed. He is an odd choice.

I think they are definitely using the same script, considering the March/April start date they are targeting.

Yeah, I'd have concerns about he handles actors, but I get the strong vibe that Josh Brolin is basically going to direct himself. Coming from Pixar and having a background in visual storytelling is a plus though. Other than that, who knows?

I can't see Neveldine/Taylor's script being anything but the backbone of what's coming up. They're certainly not starting from scratch. Heck, preproduction probably has to start this month for a March start.

Animation and a comic book are completely different genres. Give him a chance.

I respect the man for doing a decent and funny version of Horton. Obviously he can do other types of **** other than animated comedy, as I'm sure many directors can. I used to write all kinds of genres of stories for high school back in the day, plus ***** worked on the show Reboot....mad props on that.

Had he directed HORTON HEARS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN THE NEXT APARTMENT AND DOESN'T CALL 9-1-1, this would be interesting news.

But hey, someone who wants to direct JONAH HEX can't be all bad.

Well, we wouldn't think Ron Howard would direct How the Grinch Stole Christmas, but there ya go. In hindsight, that was a mistake on his part, but I digress. :o

I suspect Hayward is a fan of the comics or something to that effect and at least has some knowledge of the mythos, that's the only reason they make choices out of left field like this.

That doesn't mean Hayward can't do a rewrite himself or have another writer polish it to his liking during pre-production.

I have to say this is intriguing news. Either Hayward is a big closet fan of DC and wants to do JH properly, or he's a hired gun. I very much think this is the former, if Warners wanted a hired gun to helm JH it'd be Schumacher, Ratner or someone else who essentially bends over for Horn and Robinov in exchange for a hefty paycheck.

This is certainly not an exciting choice. I hope it turns out well.

The writer covering the story at joblo.com says he knows someone who has met him and has described him as "immensly charismatic" and "full of energy." At the least, he is enthusiastic. That has to be a start.

Well, not everyone can be Nolan. :p
