Keyser Soze said:I disagree. Sean Penn is a respected character actor, not a huge superstar. Yes, he's a big name, but no bigger than the likes of Michael Caine or Morgan Freeman. Certinaly no a superstar like Johnny Depp or Jim Carrey.
So I don't think he'd overshadow Bale. The most common complaint is that he's a serious actor. As I've said: good. The Joker is NOT a funny character. Ideally he should be outright terrifying. And Sean Penn is able to give intense, unnerving performances that can capture that element of The Joker. And that's what we have to focus on - his acting ability. Who wouldn't want the Robert DeNiro of our generation in their film?
My only doubt about Penn is his friendship with Jack Nicholson. It is no secret that the pair are close friends. In every movie Sean Penn has directed, he's made Nicholson the star. If Penn is cast as The Joker, he may end up taking a lot from the performance of his friend/mentor Jack Nicholson rather than going to the comics for inspiration. But that's not really a solid argument, so it's not really putting me off too much.
Overall, I say Sean Penn would have the potential to be a phenomenal Joker.
i did a simple google on 'Sean Penn.' you might want to look at some of these headlines. Penn is respected by his fellow actors. the public and the media are a different animal.
