I disagree. Sean Penn is a respected character actor, not a huge superstar. Yes, he's a big name, but no bigger than the likes of Michael Caine or Morgan Freeman. Certinaly no a superstar like Johnny Depp or Jim Carrey.

So I don't think he'd overshadow Bale. The most common complaint is that he's a serious actor. As I've said: good. The Joker is NOT a funny character. Ideally he should be outright terrifying. And Sean Penn is able to give intense, unnerving performances that can capture that element of The Joker. And that's what we have to focus on - his acting ability. Who wouldn't want the Robert DeNiro of our generation in their film?

My only doubt about Penn is his friendship with Jack Nicholson. It is no secret that the pair are close friends. In every movie Sean Penn has directed, he's made Nicholson the star. If Penn is cast as The Joker, he may end up taking a lot from the performance of his friend/mentor Jack Nicholson rather than going to the comics for inspiration. But that's not really a solid argument, so it's not really putting me off too much.

Overall, I say Sean Penn would have the potential to be a phenomenal Joker.

i did a simple google on 'Sean Penn.' you might want to look at some of these headlines. Penn is respected by his fellow actors. the public and the media are a different animal.

Carlitos Way

Al Pacino, Sean Penn and John Leguizamo

All terrific Actors, all terrific scenery chewers and what did you get - ensemble acting

No one upstaged the other

And I think John Leguizamo would make a Phenomenal Joker

He's already been The Clown in Spawn and no stranger to make up
The guy has got a really scary grin, very physical and been superb in some serious films as well as comedic and avantgarde

Dont think anyones mentioned him before

John Leguizamo could do the joker great

Actually, I have been thinking about John Leguizamo.

Him being Clown in Spawn wouldn't affect his odds mainly because it wasn't a too popular movie and it's not a very popular characters as say Lex Luthor.

He would make a terrific Joker but there are better choices out there to support as well.

SCREW YOU TYPECASTERS who you say Dafoe can't, already Green Goblin!!

Spiderman = colourful, comic movie
Batman = dark, gritty, crime movie

Willem's said that he doesn't care about typecasting, he's typecast as the villains when he's only been the "bad guy" like a few times during his whole career. He's the perfect joker. So screw you idiots who typecast him just because he was already in a movie.

SCREW YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Otherwise, lookwise, I'd choose Crispin under Dafoe. I haven't seen Crispin's acting, but he looks the part.

Sean Penn? How about Orlando Bloom? The suggestions are getting sad.

you going bit far don't ya? as well WB are looking for younger Joker anyway.

If Nolan is looking for a (much) younger version of the Joker then personally I would go for Nick Stahl. He was in Terminator 3 (but don't let that put you off!). He's a great actor and if anyone's seen Bully you will know he can do a creepy/menacing character.

Anyway here's a picture if one of you guys could manip it...

I hate you for not mentioning Sin City.

Just kidding. Mostly. I'm on it. :D

Whipped this up real quick. I know there are a few mistakes...I didn't bother to fix them. :)

Dafoe is turning 50 next month but he doesn't look his age - he looks a lot younger. And the fact he'd in makeup and camera lighting techniques. Also, he has great chemistry with Bale, they worked together in American Psycho.

Also, I don't mean to put down ALL of the manips here, but I highly doubt with the sequel they will give the Joker GREEN GREEN GREEN hair and WHITE skin. They're going to go with a more natural look, brownish/green hair, pale, not white skin, smokey eyes/smokey rings around the eyes, heroin chic kind of. And the lips will be a natural red - some people have redder pigment than others.

The manips are kind of sad, they're not going to look like that. I want some decent ones.

And Gary Oldman and Tim Roth are best friends might I add. They worked in many plays together and always want to work with each other. :D

Orlando Bloom doesn't even deserve to be mentioned in the same paragraph as Sean Penn. So trying to say that Sean Penn would be as bad a choice for The Joker as Orlando Bloom is utterly ridiculous!

The more I think about Tim Roth, the more I like him. He's gradually moving up my top five list:

1. Sean Penn
2. Benicio Del Toro
3. Tim Roth
4. Johnny Depp
5. Ralph Fiennes

Nick Stahl is awsome I dig his stuff, Man without a face when he was boy, then moveing onto Bully, he is alss top notch in Carnivale on HBO....

But as the Joker, em, not easy to see him there, just my opinion, nice job as Yellow Bastard in sin City though

william dafoe. He can be scary at times. And without the campy lines they gave him in spiderman, im sure he could be good.

the actor who plays the joker should have a really long face, and really well defined, almost cartoony bone structure, but scary cartoony...i really hope there is no camp attached to this joker.

Orlando Bloom doesn't even deserve to be mentioned in the same paragraph as Sean Penn. So trying to say that Sean Penn would be as bad a choice for The Joker as Orlando Bloom is utterly ridiculous!

When I said that I was making a joke. Sean Penn I find is ridiculous for teh Joker just as much as Orlando Bloom. The suggestions are getting weird.

Sean Penn would make an excellent Joker. He's been on my personal shortlist for a long time, meaning I was very happy when this rumour about him being a front-runner surfaced.

In all honesty, I think Sean Penn is a far more logical choice than names like Crispin Glover. I mean, who is Nolan more likely to go for in casting The Joker? A largely unknown actor who has a reputation for being difficult to work with, who has nothing to offer other than looking the part? Or a respected character actor - considered by many the best of his generation - who can add to the starry cast line-up alongside the likes of Michael Caine, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman?

I'd love to see Bales bat give him a good kicking
If Marilyn could act, that would actually be cool. He's almost as tall as Bale I think....

My Top 5.
No pretty faced stars. No youthful pretenders. Just top-calibre actors that could bring to life a sadistic, pyschopathic killer with an evil sense of humour.

1. John Malkovich
2. Steve Buscemi
3. Willem Dafoe
4. Tim Roth
5. Benicio del Toro
