Daredevil Jon Bernthal IS Frank Castle / The Punisher! - Part 1

The key to a good Punisher series is to have interesting supporting characters that he can interact with to whatever degree, and who can react to him. You also need to meticulously set up villains so disgusting and despicable that the audience will be rooting for punishment.

I almost see a Punisher movie/solo series as an evolution of slasher films. Everyone who likes that sub-genre knows you're there to see the killer kill and the teens in the cabin or what have you are just there to facilitate that. Well, with the Punisher, the unstoppable killing machine actually IS the protagonist, and we can root for him because he's taking out the very worst human garbage.

So, I never even heard of Bernthal till this. I just watched his red carpet interview and I had no idea his Frank Castle "voice" was acting. His voice is much high pitched and less "tough sounding". I thought he was just one of those macho type actors who plays tough guys, sort of like Jason Statham

Not a Walking Dead fan?

Jon nailed the role..no doubt.

However I have reservation about the character punisher.
To me, he is a one note character. How much can his arc change? or how interesting can his arc be?

He hunt criminals then he kills them. That it! Does he ever redempt himself? by maybe not killing?

The only thing that can be made interesting is the process where he goes around hunting for his prey. Character arc wise, its one note.

I'm not good with my English, not sure if I get my point across. what it meant ultimately is frank works better as a side character as his character doesn't do much revolving.

I know ppl wants a solo punisher show. That would only work if they have very very interesting stories. it can't be a film about character study. characters like matt murdock and wilson fisk are so much more interesting and colorful, character wise. hell even bullseye is a much more layered character.

He's an anti-hero...like deadpool. He doesn't stop killing. I think they can make it interesting by having creative ways he hunts his prey and to also have interesting prey.

The only time Punisher has ever had remorse in a book is if someone escapes his justice, or he maybe got the wrong person...but usually to him you're guilty by association so his brain rarely thinks like that.

Finished the season yesterday. I couldn't get enough of the Punisher, Bernthal was so awesome.

The Punisher and Kingpin were by far the highlights of the season to me, I was glued to the screen when those two were on.

I'm 6 episodes in, just out of curiosity:

Does Frank get his trademark skull logo?

Great character and I'm totally down for a show focused on him.

I need more! The prison scenes are definitely the highlight of the season for me.

The Punisher was totally awesome. Bernthal's performance was great, and the character was written well too. I hope we see him again, I don't care if it will be in a DD season 3, the Defenders, or even his own series, that guy stole the show and I want more dammit! :woot:

I think every FPS gamer now has a new mantra

One batch, two batch. Penny and dime.
Here I come.

I really like Jon's performances and I think the character was written well overall but there are some moments that I think were out of character, especially the hospital shootout in episode 1. He just seem so reckless, not even hiding the shotgun he is carrying. The Punisher I knew would never turn a place with so many civilians into a war zone.

Yeah, that's the only moment that stood out wrong to me. Castle should have went in quietly to finish him, not recklessly firing everywhere.

IMO if they do go with a Punisher series they may pick it up where season 2 of Daredevil left off...I also think a very compelling series can be made of him fleshing out his manifesto/code... up till now it was all about revenge on the gangs that killed his family... there is a very interesting story there somewhere

I think Wayne Knight was one of the best casting choices for Micro in Punisher:War Zone imo.

I'd like it if they didn't make it too easy to root for the punisher. Leave it to the audience to wonder is he insane? Has he gone too far? Could the criminals have redeemed themselves?

Maybe have part of the story be about the fbi trying to track him down. Have an alternate perspective of what he's doing. As they did with matt.

Netflix and marvel better make a daggum Punisher series. this was hands down, the greatest live action iteration of the character.

People are used to the Punisher from the comics, a man at war with crime for years, decades. Most, if not all, vestiges of humanity are by then burned away.
The series takes a very realistic approach here. Until the last episode, he's not the Punisher. He´s Frank Castle, a grieving man out for vengeance, lost without his family, and in pain. During the series, he gradually evolves, until at last: "I'm already dead." That's when the Punisher is born. Frank's mission is finished, the Punisher starts his: an unending war with the guilty.

He even tells Karen she was never in danger in the hospital later on in the series.
