I spotted the twist early, but it doesn't matter. It's like comedy; even if you know the punchline, part of the fun is anticipating how the joke gets there, and then what the reaction and aftermath will be. Same here. If you're a horror/sci fi vet and figure out the twist, then the film becomes about how the story then solves the problem of the twist. Which this one does very well.
I liked it until the twist, I thought it would happen but once it did it left me feeling indifferent. Lupita was great, excellent actually. Peele is great too like I said loved everything but the dad (towards the end) and the twist.
I think it was a better HORROR movie than Get Out. The acting was incredible, the directing and camera work were spot on. And the movie was freaking scary. That whole initial home invasion section was tense as heck. I don't even mind that some stuff just doesn't really add up. I just overlooked it because...yeah.
I will say that I really didnt need an explanation...and when I got one it took the wind out of my sails a bit. I was fine with this just being a thing that was happening...and the explanation, I felt, trampled a bit on the social message I was getting...or, maybe it veered into a different message that we had 30 seconds to dwell on, after an entire movie of something else. I'm a big believer that Sci-Fi and Horror should often have something to say about politics/social issues...so, when it fizzled out a bit for me I was disappointed.
But overall...one heck of a "watch with a crowd" movie. It totally works as a scary Horror film...and a very well done one at that.
Saw this earlier and yeah I thought it was just fine overall which is definitely somewhat disappointing considering how awesome and promising the trailers looked. Get Out is far superior to this IMO, and I wasn't even a huge fan of that movie. It's not nearly as scary or tense as I wanted it to be, but for the most part its pretty entertaining at least. Lupita gives a great dual performance, and I loved some of the use of music in this movie.
The **** The Police bit, and that orchestral version of I Got Five On It that played towards the end
were really nice, clever touches, but other than that this movie was way too predictable, especially that final reveal.
I honestly predicted it 5 minutes in, and as much as I still like Winston Duke I really disliked how his character was written as kind of a idiot in this. The guy is already super charismatic and funny, but here he's a complete wimp most of the time and that annoyed the hell out of me. I think Peele let this one slip away from him somewhat, because while it is extremely well made and directed it never lived up to its high concept potential IMO.
Caught an early showing of it yesterday. I really really enjoyed it. Felt it was better than Get Out, but US is more along my tastes in for a horror movie. The opening 40ish minutes is one of the most tense times Ive had in a theater in a very long time. The home invasion/monolog scene was so damn good.. Lupita is amazing in this and I fully support Red being held in the same regards of Jason, Freddy etc. Just a very unnerving performance IMO. Did she even blink once?
Any negatives? I felt the humor was at times a bit out of place at times in the middle section. Its not that its bad it just didnt feel natural after what came before it. Finally, I think this would have worked a bit better if The Tethered were just something that suddenly happened. This was a movie where "just because." would have worked in its favor over the reasons we did get.
Definetely no sophmore slump here for Peele. 8.5/10

I agree with this. Really liked the film. While the twist was obvious and seemingly purposely telegraphed for the audience, it didn't impact my enjoyment of the film.
Well that was a mind ****. I kind of predicted the ending at the beginning but then forgot about it by the end. I think the third act might be a little too big for its own good (especially at explaining the origins of the Tethered), but as a whole, good stuff! Really enjoyed it and the music and visuals were phenomenal. More please, Mr. Peele!
I enjoyed the hell out of this. For sure will be picking this up on Blu Ray to watch again.
I thought the performances were great. Lupita for sure is gonna get a nod for Best Actress.
I liked how they didn't try to explain everything. I was just thinking about Stranger Things and how I hope they don't explain everything with the Upside Down and how too many things try to unnecessarily explain things. I didn't need to know the Tethered's origins.
The balance between humor and horror were great. Theres's only one complaint...and it's the twist
I was so ready to give this movie credit for not doing the very cliche doppleganger/clone thing of swapping/switching and stuff of that sort. It became obvious once it was revealed and you think about the clues like Tethered Adelaide being the only Tethered who can talk, Adelaide seemingly understanding the Tethered more. But it really doesn't help the film and just makes it come off as cliche. I mean if you edit the ending and take out the reveal the movie still plays out the same and is still very interesting.
But yeah I really liked it. I didn't like it as much as Get Out, but it's still really good.
Was there any social commentary with this one. Im dumb so I mightve missed it, but it for sure wasn't as obvious as it was with Get Out.
So the tethered are the results of a government cloning program? So how did the government clone the children if the program was stopped? Or are we supposed to believe the cloned parents miraculously had the same kids as the real parents?

It's one of those things...don't think about it too much. Like when you really pick at it it doesnt make sense at all, but the movie wanted to leave things open ambiguous and unexplained
Really enjoyed this! Peele has proven himself so far, and man this did not disappoint. Greatest horror film of all time? definitely not. But original as hell? yes. The twist is predictable but i still really enjoyed it

I saw an interview with Peele where he claims to have the entire mythology/backstory that explains everything, but he wants to leave a lot of those mysteries unexplained. I prefer it that way.

it made me question who was really the hero of the film, Adelaide or her Tethered? And from that, who're the bad guys? The real Adelaide was trying to get revenge on the system that produced doppelgangers and left them to fend for themselves, while the fake Adelaide was trying to hold onto a life that wasn't really hers. So now both the good guys and bad guys each got what they wanted in a way, but the twist makes heroes out the underground doppelgangers. That's the brilliance of the twist to me anyway.

I saw someone say that in their review...I really don't get it. It came out, at least started press screenings, like what 2 weeks ago? You've seen the film once or twice and you're already ready to call it the best of all time.
I don'y get why people are in such a rush to call something the greatest _______ of all time or even a classic. It just makes you seem like a hypebeast rather than someone who thinks about their opinions on art. Let it breathe
Not my idea but from what I've read from various places (BOT, Reddit, etc.) there are a few allegories that people discussed:
1. The people living above and the Tethered living underground are the upper and working class, respectively. This is most prominent through Red/ Real Adeline's story about the Princess and her shadow (the Princess gets Thanksgiving dinner while her shadow eats raw and bloody rabbits, etc.) The people living above (or at least the 2 families portrayed) having a satisfying life (the upper class) while the Tethered live like savages (the working class).
2. The twist (Adeline and Red were switched) shows that with the right nurture and care the Tethered can live like human with very little difference. It's specifically mentioned several times that Red/ Fake Adeline was a very graceful, talented ballerina, despite being originated from the underground, this was because she received nurture and the right education -> The working class can totally perform and achieve just as well as the upper class if given the right conditions.
3. The uprising of all the Tethered is allegory for the protests of the working class against the upper class, especially the top 1%.
My own read is that it's similar to
the Morlocks and Eloi in The Time Machine.
Btw, does anyone know whether
Zora and Jason are considered "half-Tethered"? (since their mother is Tethered). If so, what are their Tethered version? "Half-human"? There's this interesting theory of Valonqar from BOT that Jason was also switched. The experiment was conducted to control people like puppets, i.e. when Fake Adeline/ Red performed ballet, so does real Adeline (just as elegant), despite not having ballet lessons in the underground. Jason can also control Pluto. If the Tethered can control the origin version, that means Jason is actually a Tethered.

I feel like one the last spoilered question, they’re definitely half, but does that mean anything? Real Adelaide is an unreliable narrator so we aren’t sure if her story of events about the creation of the Tethered are true. And even if they are, the experiment was considered a failure. It isn’t super clear who has the most control when the link works, as during the past scenes we clearly see the Tethered are following their counterparts on the surface. So I don’t think having more control would for sure indicate a Terhered.
I enjoyed this. It’s not a slam dunk but it’s good. I agree that some of the jokes fell flat. Lupita finally ‘earned’ her reputation as I’ve always thought she was good but terribly, terribly overrated in the past. She delivered big time. The other MVP was the score. So darn good.
The twist is one of those that is so obvious that you start to question yourself because it can’t be that easy. But given the message the movie is trying t convey, I get why it’s there. Maybe it’s because I didn’t follow all of the trailers but the biggest surprise to me is that it was an
all out Tethered attack/invasion. I thought it was just about Adeleide’s family. Granted I think they showed Elizabeth Moss slicing herself in the trailer but I forgot that part.

who can control who. It seems like both tethered and non tethered can. I was thinking at first that maybe whomever version is not in the tunnel can control the other but I can’t see the logic in that. Plus both Jasons were above ground when one controlled the other.

Yeah, the rules are not clear on

I wondered if maybe the tunnels were built with some sort of control built in. They were supposed to be used for housing the test subjects, so I figured tests were done elsewhere. It’s hard to say, and all speculation. I love how much this film makes me want to analyze it and learn more.
