Josh Hartnett, who once starred in 40 Days and 40 Nights, is now in final talks to topline 30 Days of Night for Columbia Pictures.

The film is based on the Steve Niles graphic novel, illustrated by Ben Templesmith and published by IDW. David Slade is directing.

Written by Stuart Beattie and Brian Nelson, the story centers on a sleepy, secluded Alaska town called Barrow, the sun sets and doesn't rise for over thirty consecutive days and nights. From the darkness, across the frozen wasteland, an evil will come that will bring the residents of Barrow to their knees. The only hope for the town is the Sheriff (Hartnett) and Deputy, a husband and wife who are torn between their own survival and saving the town they love.

Shooting is set to begin in early August in New Zealand.

Ghost House Pictures' Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert are producing, while Grant Curtis is overseeing the production for the Sony-based production company. Mike Richardson, Joe Drake and Nathan Kahane are executive producing.

Shannon Gaulding and Adam Milano are overseeing for Sony, which will distribute the film in North America and a few international territories. Mandate Pictures will handle the remaining international rights.

Hartnett, who most recently starred in Lucky Number Slevin, is filming Resurrecting the Champ and next appears in The Black Dahlia.

I was looking forward to someone more unlikely as a hero. I thought Mark Ruffalo would have been good in the role. Or because the art was kinda ambiguous sometimes i thought it would be interesting to make him of Eskimo descent and cast Adam Beach who is actually Native American but could pass as Eskimo.

sounds good to me. I always liked Josh Hartnett. But he always seems like he isnt trying hard enough, like he's just below giving a good performance. But this should be good.
But i though Steve Nile also wrote the screenplay? or had something to do with the writing of the script?

as long as they don't change the ending, I'm cool with it

I just hope that they keep the visual style of the comic books...or at least try to.

If I was Josh Hartnett I'd never want to volunteer to move to Alaska for a few months.

Yeah, that's my biggest concern. Harnett is pretty bland from what I've seen of him in other films. He's a bit wooden, actually. Kind of like Keanu-Lite or something. He does okay with what it is that he does, but he doesn't branch much from the core persona he's developed in most of his films.

I thought he was pretty decent in Lucky Number Slevin, but I can see where you're coming from.

Yeah, he was okay in that, but he was still sort of the same character he is in every film with a little bit of a twist. I don't dislike the guy by any means, but I don't really find him or his performances very memorable, either.

Aren't the characters supposed to be native american/eskimo or something?

Josh Harnett? The poor man's Benico Del Toro. Trust me, look at him and you can't tell me he doesn't look like De Toro..
