when are we likely to get a trailer?

David Slade apparently made a really dark movie with Hard Candy so he should be suited to this kind of thing. I'm looking forward to this.

First still

30 Days Trailers this Friday

Planning your weekend jaunt to see Hostel: Part II? Well, there's a very good chance you'll see one of two trailers for the fall releases Hatchet (opening September 7th) and 30 Days of Night (October 19th).

Poster for 30 Days of Night!

Sam Raimi may be too busy with Spider-Man to make his own horror movies, but he seems to find plenty of time to produce them for others. He’s part of the producing team on Sony’s upcoming horror/thriller 30 Days of Night. It stars Josh Hartnett as one of a handful in the small town of Barrow, Alaska under siege by a group of bloodthirsty vampires.

Alright, the last thing we need is another vampire movie. But Sony has just released the first teaser poster for the film, and it’s kind of cool. There’s nothing glossy or slick about it. It’s gritty and, for a poster, actually pretty scary.

"i have a bad feeling about this"

DAVID SLADE ON THE 30 DAYS OF NIGHT MOVIE.

On October 17, the culmination of six years’ work comes together in the form of the 30 Days of Night movie, which opens wide that day. It’s been a long time coming, but finally, the opening of the big-screen adaptation of Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith’s seminal vampire tale from 2001, which stars Josh Hartnett, Melissa George, Ben Foster, and Danny Huston, is rapidly approaching. With only half a year left before the movie opens, I wanted to check in with the movie’s director, David Slade. David’s previous effort, Hard Candy, terrorized many (mostly men), and after spending a week on the 30 Days set with he and Ben Templesmith, I know he’ll be doing the same here, albeit in very different ways than Hard Candy.

Slade, who’s been splitting time between Los Angeles and New Zealand for the past few months, managed to eke out some time outside of the edit bay to answer a few questions about the coming film.

Newsarama: Principle shooting on the movie ended in December. How goes the post-production on the movie? What shape is the movie in at this point?

David Slade: I am cutting with (Hard Candy) editor Art Jones, Brian Reitzell is composing the soundtrack and Weta Digital (amongst others) are doing effects work for us all simultaneously, getting ready for a late October release—we have been cutting for a long time, we are reaching the final stages, and we are exhausted, but there is still a long road ahead to get the film ready for cinemas...

NRAMA: Based on the week I spent on-set, I came away with a great sense of your vision for the movie and your efforts to be as true to the comic as possible. Now that you're seeing all the pieces assembled and seeing the work Weta is doing with the vampires, how do you feel about things? Will fans of Ben Templesmith's art like what they see? (let's all note that this movie was shot with real sets and actors and old-fashioned make-up and fake blood... or was it?... and not a CGI-heavy affair like 300)

DS: I feel really excited about the film. It is in the place I hoped which is a kind of netherworld between a harsh reality and the beautiful stylistic artwork of Ben Templesmith. It has great dramatic performances as well as a great big huge dose of deep red horror.

We are not too heavy on CGI effects—though we have some fairly remarkable things happening digitally that I believe have never been quite done this way, at least not to this extent before (but I am going to keep the rest of that hush-hush).

We used as many practical effects as possible, though some things we did with digital help, as the visceral nature would have led to severe injury and death otherwise. We used gallons of blood, we shot in real snow locations and in studio back lots.

I think this is going to be very different from 300, and I think very different from any vampire film I have seen.

Aesthetically, I was driven by Ben's artwork. We retained as many of Ben's character designs as we could, and overall, the Barrow of the graphic novel, and the look of the colours, will translate into the film. In one case, down to the patterns on a character's fabric.

Marlow (Played exquisitely by Danny Huston) does have a new look—he is a kind of composite of Marlow and Vincente. Also the Stranger in the diner (Played by Ben Foster) is awesome and his role is extended slightly from the graphic novel, though with close early consultation with Steve Niles.

NRAMA: I know this isn't really your area, but still, people are interested so let's see if there's anything you can tell us. Do you have any idea when a trailer, or one-sheet image, will be released? Do you have any involvement with the cutting of the trailer itself?

DS: I don't have any real involvement in the physical aspect of marketing, we don't have time, but I do talk a lot with those people to make sure they are doing the right thing for the film and we share materials.

They are very excited about the film and have promised no deep voiced man starting the trailer with "In a world..."

We will see. I have seen some early prototype posters that are very cool and they are promising to show us a trailer soon—I think you can expect a trailer out around the time that Hostel 2 hits the screens (I can't be official or guarantee that but I believe its a target).

NRAMA: Knowing of your love for ‘em, are there any dachshund cameos in the movie? Or did the dingos get 'em on-set before you could make that happen? Are there even dingos in New Zealand?

DS: I don't know anything about that. Weiners?

Er, no vampire animals, I was very clear about that with Sam Raimi and Rob Tappert. No vampire Polar Bears, no vamp Penguins, Seals or Orca Whales—maybe in the sequel, vampire weiners.... now I could run with that...

NRAMA: How does the movie end?

DS: Really well!!!

I can't give that away!!

But suffice to say if you have read the graphic novel there won't be too many shocks. We stuck fairly closely to Steve Niles story and he is getting a writing credit.

NRAMA: Well, if you can't tell us that, how about this—assuming anyone lives through the end of the movie, would you have any interest in revisiting this world in a sequel? And assuming yes, what would you like to see happen in a first sequel?

DS: I love this world and this mythology, I think we have managed to re-invent the vampire genre—taking it further would be an absolute dream, but it would depend on more practical matters than creative, I think. I just want to get through this one alive first.

NRAMA: Anything besides post-production on the movie in the immediate future for David Slade? I hear whisperings of a potential comic book collaboration with Ben Templesmith...

DS: We have talked about the future and I have a number of ideas. Poor Ben is swamped under Fell and Wormwood, and I am swamped under this film so it will be when we both emerge—except to say there is a two-page short we collaborated on while we were both in New Zealand, which he has nearly finished. It is actually a Cthuloid comedy and has nothing to do with 30 Days.

That said, I would love to do more work with him, working on the film got me thoroughly inside a vampire mind and I have a number of 30 Days stories that I would love to see in graphic form.

First things first, though—I am throwing every molecule of effort I possess into this film.

It goes:

30 Days of night
Dark days
Return to Barrow

Saw the trailer with Hostel II today, it looks quite good.

I don't care for Hartnett, I agree with the assessment on page 1 that he's a bland actor, but I love horror and David Slade is at the helm (Hard Candy is a great ****ing movie) so I have faith in it.

sweet trailer but did anyone else hear any of the actors talk because I didnt and I dont kno if thats what its suppose to be

The film looks very atmospheric with a great visual style
