The movie Cop Out. Kevin Smith changed his style. And if Smith changed his style then any cult director has a chance of changing his style for a chance at mainstream success.

Hmm...I'm pretty sure Kitty Pryde and Emma Frost in Astonishing X-Men are NOTHING alike. And I don't think the female character in Dr. Horrible is much like any other female character in his works.

And the most memorable thing about his X run was when he turned Wolverines mind into that of a 8 year old girl. Which i admit was pretty awesome.

But again, that's another Whedonism. GIRL POWER! Turn the overly macho, bravado filled man into a woman! GREAT!

See you know what is gonna happen in Avengers now, Thor, Cap and Stark will be defeated then Wasp will come in and save the day.

Or maybe it'll mean that Wasp will actually be in the movie (which it doesn't look as though she will be) and that Black Widow won't just sit there as eye candy (which is really starting to **** me off in movies.)

You really shouldn't worry too much. He did that to Wolvie more or less for comedy factor I'm guess, not to promote "girl power." Not to mention he'll be under strict sanction to most likely make Robert Downey the star of the show.

If anything I'd hope that he will make the two women in the movie stronger than they were probably going to be portrayed under Zak Penn's legendary writing.

Besides, you didn't see him empower Bo-Peep in Toy Story.

No, the most memorable thing about his run was stuff like this:

And that's only the stuff I saved for Cyclops. That's not counting Cyclops' awesome punk on the aliens near the end. Or Wolverine and Beast's exchange about the Cure. Or Collosus smashing in the aliens head while screaming he isn't made of metal but is made of rage. He made the X-Men into total badasses and made dozens of memorable scenes and moments.

You just focus on all the "hipster" stuff and "girl power" stuff, ignoring that Whedon is PHENOMENAL at making great super hero moments.

1) People who are excited about Whedon getting the job are generally fans of his....go back and read this thread and the evidence is overwhelming
2) People who dont like this pick are people who dont like his work.
3) Being a fan of something can be very important when you are auditioning or in the case of directors interviewing. If I as a producer looking for a director for say "Buck Rogers" and I have two directors 1) Doesnt know who Buck Rogers is 2) Is a massive Buck Rogers fan and can quote episodes and has the action figure, which one is going to get the job.

But of course you are going to dismiss my concerns because I dont worship at the feet of Whedon of claim to be a browncoat

I already said I've only seen one bit of his work, and I'm still totally for him.

Also it's a damn good thing you're not picking directors for adaptations because that second director could be very ****** and make a big fanservice tribute to the source material while the first could be brilliant and could learn the source material during prep-work and create something great.

Wow. You know, when I read this news that Joss Whedon is in final negotiations to direct The Avengers, I was overjoyed. I thought it was a dream pick, one of those amazing fanboy choices that's too perfect to ever actually happen. And the more and more legit the story seemed to get, the happier I got.

But I felt the need to temper my excitement. But how to do that? Then it hit me. Superhero Hype. There's something wonderful about the Hype where, no matter how awesome a piece of news is, no matter how perfect someone is for a role in the latest upcoming movie, there is always going to be SOMEONE pissing and moaning about it and dampening the positivity. And so I came to this thread to bask in the hate, and feed on delicious fanboy tears.

Whedon's Astonishing X-Men. One of my absolute favorite runs on any comic book ever.

See personally, i think Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Dollhouse and Serenity are crap.

And in the case of Firefly and Dollhouse, so do a lot of people seeing as neither of them lasted long.

And i totally wouldn't be surpised if Eliza "can't act her way out of a paper bag" Dushku gets cast as Wasp. And Nathan Fillion gets cast as Hawkeye at the expense of the FAR superior Jeremy Renner.

I believe it's Whedon's Astonishing X-Men. I hated X-Men comics. Even as someone who has followed the characters since the old 90s cartoon, and someone who loved the movies (the first two at least), I found the convoluted continuity of X-Men comics unbearable, and so was on a self-imposed embargo, where I vowed never to read any X-Men comics anymore. But after much convincing, a friend got me to read Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men run, and it was.... well, astonishing. He made a series that was accessible, easy to follow, and FUN, with razor sharp dialogue and note-perfect characterisation. Reading that gave me some hope for X-Men comics, and even encouraged me to try some other recent X-Men comics by other writers, none of which were as good as Whedon's run.

I have my reservations about Whedon, but I believe Marvel will keep a tight rein on him with Avengers, because this is the project that they've been building toward with multiple movies, and there's no way in hell that they'll let him deviate too far away from the movie. And Whedon, being that he's knowledgable about fanboy stuff and is a comic book writer himself, probably understand the importance of delivering a movie that can very well redefine the superhero landscape on the big screen. He's not going to fk it up by turning The Avengers into the Scoopy Gang a la Buffy.

I was wondering Ace who exactly would you have preferred to direct given that Favreau was never going to be able to take on the project?

I would wager it's easier to do an Avengers than a JL movie at this point. Not that DC is more iconic, but.....they have a LOT more baggage than Stan Lee's guys obviously. That and only two of their characters have been brought to the screen since their inception.

The funny thing is, if you were to ask me who I'd want to direct The Avengers (and people have asked me this before), I would immediately respond with "Joss Whedon", then immediately laugh it off and say "But yeah... as if that's ever going to happen." Hence me being so happy with the decision.

Maybe Kenneth Branagh. Spielberg. Scott. Someone who can make great films and who can get past their own sensibilities.

You know why Whedon was chosen? He knows how to deal with the team dynamic more than anyone. I mean a dynamic where each character is a total polar opposite of every other one, they don't always get along, they sometimes each have their own personal agenda, yet in the end they can band together and get the **** done.

I really would wish anyone who recommends some like Scott or Spielberg would just get shot. Seriously, what has ever indicated they were even a slight possibility? The fact that Marvel goes for smaller directors that haven't really hit the mainstream yet? Or the fact that they go for directors with the right vision rather then a big name?
