Jumanji: The Next Level

Hopefully getting to see this on the weekend. Looking forward to it and the numbers from this weekend are promising.

Really liked this movie. If you enjoyed the first one, you should enjoy this one. Towards the middle, there's an obvious set up for how the movie would end that I think kind of ruins what should have been a heartfelt moment, but it was still pretty nice. Also, a clever little cameo if you remember the first Jumanji film. I was wondering if they will take this franchise full circle with the next one and now it appears they probably will based on the mid credit scene. If so, that would make for a nice trilogy for the new films.

Other than that, the storyline and the special effects are just serviceable, the true appeal of this franchise is the interaction between the mains, watching them interact as the characters in the video game, and of course the action set-pieces. This is a film for kids and kids at heart. Honestly, this franchise has one more good film in it and then that's that. They survived on the strength of changing from board game to video game, although maybe they can take it to space with Zathura.

7/10

While the weekend number was surprisingly good the Monday number seems to be shockingly bad, just $3.3m (79% drop from Sunday). The "expected number" from a $16m Sunday was more like $5m-$6m.
It'll be interesting to see the rest of the weekday numbers to see if this was just a weird anomaly.

Should have great legs for the holiday season....Frozen 2 just came and went , very forgettable...While it seems the new Star Wars may be the Last Jedi 2.0

Looks like Monday estimates have been revised slightly upwards to $3.66m. Not great, but better.

I’m not sure I’d describe a movie that just spent 3 straight weeks at #1 and is about to surpass its cultural phenom predecessor to become the #1 or #2 highest-grossing animated film of all-time as “just came and went,” lol. It might not get the kind of chatter online that the more geek-friendly properties do, but there’s no denying Frozen 2 is the massive hit everyone expected it to be. I doubt this film will have much better legs than that one. These sequels to massive breakout hits rarely make the same kind of noise as their predecessors, even if they ultimately make more money since they opened bigger.

Saw it yesterday and it was pretty fun

so do the fact the rock could smack the bad dudes chest and get a pop up imply the villain was also an avatar? Loved the set up for the sequel too

Box office is looking good at almost $500M on a $125 budget. I say we are definitely getting a sequel.

Just got back from seeing it, it was a blast. Sure, it doesn't take the story to a true "next level" (credits scene excluded) but it's carries on the pure entertainment value of the cast and set pieces. And Danny DeVito and Donald Glover are perfect additions that shake things up in a great way.

This weekend was really weird this thing bounced back like crazy to second place.

Box Office: ‘Cats’ Declawed Overseas, ‘Jumanji’ and ‘Rise of Skywalker’ Hit Global Records

In other box office milestones, Sony’s “Jumanji: The Next Level” is readying to smash the $500 million milestone globally as ticket sales reached $472 million this weekend. Abroad, the Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart-led sequel has amassed $296 million and is now a stone’s throw from hitting the $300 million mark. “Jumanji” beat out “Rise of Skywalker” for the top spot in a handful of new markets, including Australia ($9.6 million) and Italy ($6.7 million).

And as if Jumanji 2019 is on the way to outgross the last Jumanji. Its not! It won't even come close to the box office numbers of the "very forgettable" Frozen 2.

Its clear that Frozen 2 and Star Wars 9 won't outgross their precedessor orhave the same legs. But no need to diminish them like as if Jumanji 2 is guaranteed to outgross its predecessor.

I liked it as much as the last one. I think they changed it up enough to keep it fresh. The set pieces, particularly the bridge scene and winter fortress were really good. And props to the adult actors for believably playing their real world counterparts, especially Jack Black who was really good as Fridge. Even Kevin Hart didn’t feel like he was just playing himself.

Only thing I would have changed was

finding a way for Milo to change into an avatar that could talk at the end so he and Grandpa could have had a real one on one conversation.
But the flying horse was awesome.

Its now looking even better with over $610 million.

First one was pretty enjoyable. Havent seen this one yet.

The screening I went to was a bit snug seating wise. It took me a bit to warm up to this, in the end I damn near fell apart. I'm getting soft in my old age.

Very enjoyable fun for the whole family.

For me it doesn't quite hit the same mark as the first new one did. That doesn't mean its a bad movie would still say its very much worth a watch as the cast bounce off of each other really well again and there are some really funny moments.

Not bad. Looks like it will fall short of its predecessor but still great numbers.

I saw it recently and, whilst I liked the first two more, I enjoyed it a fair bit. Probably echoing the general consensus here.. story is a bit basic/similar to the first (it is a kids film though) but they do just enough to keep it fresh (although they could have done more imo).

It’s fun with some good set piece action sequences. Shame it’s kind of another forgettable/generic baddie* (but I guess in some way, that’s the point, being a video game).. The best bits of the film is the interaction between the leads, they all have great chemistry and it’s fun seeing Johnson and Little do DeVito and Glover.

It might be too synonymous with Alan Parish/Robin Williams but I would have liked to have seen Ven Pelt worked in somehow. He could have made for a good obstacle or ‘level’ in the game. And I get why they don’t do this (Nigel has kind of replaced this) but I miss the clues/riddles the players got from the board game version.. They could have utilised this as individual missions (although that might over-complicate things) or use them as clues at the start of each ‘level’ in the game/on the map.

They telegraph the flying horse which is a shame ‘cos I was then waiting for it but it was still a cool moment. It was a nice little cameo from Nora too but I feel this may go over a lot of peoples heads which is a shame. I kind of wish there had just been one little line along the lines of “how are Peter and Judy” “They’re fine” but that might have been too much for that scene. We need a Carl Bentley cameo in the next one.

*When Bravestone hits Jurgens chest and the menu pops up, it never occurred to me that it means he’s an avatar, until I read the thing Johnson said afterwards. That could be REALLY interesting, if they go In the right direction with it. I’m not sure if the ending of this film and tease for the next one fully lines up with what that direction might (or should) be though…. (personally I would take another ‘in game’ film where the characters find out the baddie is an avatar and explore what that might mean and then I would do a 4th film set in the real world where we find out who that player is).

On that note though, the tease for the next one was really good, it makes sense really they would go in that direction that but I genuinely didn’t see it coming/think they would go there - so it made it a decent surprise. If that is where they are going with it, then that could be a lot of fun.
