Jurassic Park IV - Part 1

Safety Not Guaranteed is an excellent flick. He'll bring a spin to the franchise.

Anyone else worried they will go with the new "more accurate" look for the dinos?

With the proper lighting, that could look more terrifying than the old rex. I think the design would take more of an explanation than we got for the raptors in 3 (with the crests).

Now that the director is chosen, I wonder who the composer will be. If Spielberg is 'overseeing' this like he did Poltergeist, perhaps he'll convince John Williams to come back for a third go-round?

Probably not, but I can't see Universal letting Trevorrow bringing on his Safety composer Ryan Miller to score the film.

Joe Johnston not directing AND an unexpected and inspired choice as the new director? Niiiiiiiiiiiice!

Random thoughts:

-I think Spielberg was the 'active' fill-in director during pre-production while they were trying to find the eventual director, because they already set up shop in New Orleans and apparently have scouted in Hawaii recently. I wouldn't be surprise if the pre-vis and CGI prep were supervised by The Beard himself, and then he can ease Mr. Tremmorow into active duty.

-I think they should bring back BD Wong. His character had a big role in the first book but sadly, he was reduced to a cameo of sorts in the film. I think it's his time to shine some how.

- Also, I think this time around, I can see a rival corporation creating their own 'Dinosaur Park', probably (again) based outside of the US. But they can also introduce new environments like deserts, mountain terrains, etc. that were not featured in the previous films.

-While I would like to see the origianl three (Dern, Neil, Goldblum) back, I just can't see how they can do it without it being forced. Umm...maybe the CIA are asking them to investigate...but that's essentially the same premise as the two sequels.

God imagine being the guy who follows Spielberg? Like I know other directors have done Jurrassic Park but everyone has forgotten about them.

I mean, imagine turning up to work and your boss says "I want you to be like Spielberg...but better".

I'm very happy for him. Going from a $700,000 indie flick to a big franchise like this. I hope he can handle it. That's why I think Steven will be by his side, along with Frank Marshall. They are there to protect him from the studio. And for guidance obviously.

The ball is rolling. In the meantime, I'm looking forward to checking out JP 3D.

For some reason, I just want Laura Dern back. Sam Neill pretty much ruled himself out years ago (but money can talk). And Jeff Goldblum... I don't know how you could bring his character back after the Isla Sorna and San Diego incidents.

I thought Dern, along with Ariana and Joseph, really brought heart and soul to the first film. She wasn't in JP3 enough IMO.

They're saying bring back Tim, seeing as how he's become a pretty good actor as of late, to lead the thing. Add a couple thespians and a couple good actors/actresses that are also eye candy, and you're set.

They're casting the film now, since filming is supposed to start next month. We ought to know within weeks who's coming back and who's fresh to the franchise.

Honestly? No. Most of the images like above aren't accurate to the fossil evidence at all - they're totally hypothetical illustrations. For one, there isn't evidence that the T REX had feathers. There's evidence that earlier dinosaurs related to it did, but that isn't enough to confirm for the Rex specifically. Secondly, the Cretaceous period was far warmer than earlier periods, meaning that animals wouldn't need as much insulation as previous generations. Third, its a misconception that most dinosaurs had "feathers", period. There's evidence of proto-feathers, which is largely different than what you see in that picture and think of when you hear the word feather. A dinosaur of the T Rex's size, in a warm climate, would over heat and die if it were covered in feathers like that. At the most, scientists postulate (from what I've read) that it's possible baby Rexes had a thicker proto-feather covering (based on evidence found in distant cousins), but as the the Rex grew, it would lose those feathers. At most, scientists think that an adult Rex may have retained a very light coating of proto-feathers, similar in size and thickness to the light amount of hair elephants have.

So no, I doubt we'll ever see anything like that on screen. Our childhoods are safe. :yay:

As far I know filming does not film next month. They are renting out the studio/faculties next month through November for prep work.

I finally got around to watching Safety Not Guaranteed. It at least didn't have a cheap look to it, it looked good. Some of the shots were inspired, particularly at night. There was a weird technical problem near the beginning with bad continuity in the audio. See if you can find it!

Anyway, Jurassic Park. I really didn't need another JP movie after the amazing first one. The sequels didn't live up to the first one. I have no idea why this is continuing artistically, though the business end explains itself. I joked earlier in the thread about time travel wackiness being in the movie, which is funny because that's Safety Not Guaranteed's premise.

I thought Neill was always trying to come back? I recall interviews saying he'd like to come back, if it didn't feel forced. Or something like that.

THIS.

Let's just stick with the scales since we have absolutely no evidence that says they had feathers or not. The scales look cooler.

i just hope this movie is good. loved the first one but wasn't too keen on 2 & 3. perhaps i would have liked Lost World better if i hadn't read the book before the movie came out.

Weren't they already doing prep work already, prior to the Trevorrow announcement?

Honestly this whole franchise has lived off the success of the first movie and that's it. Out of the 3 JP films does anyone really love any of them other than the 1st?

This is probably one of the most forced franchises around. I mean i still love the first, used to really enjoy the 2nd but haven't for years and never enjoyed the 3rd. At least with other franchises some of the sequels can stand on their own at least...

I thought that about the Planet of the Apes movies (where the original was only worth watching), but that changed with Rise of the Apes. Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa just really nailed the character aspect of the prequel, crafted mostly real characters (especially Caesar) and really turned the franchise around. Rupert Wyatt put everything together magnificently, but the script did a lot of heavy lifting.

Jaffa & Silver have earned my trust, and I hope they gave Jurassic Park 4 the kind of boost they imbued Rise of the Apes with. Make me care about the human characters and give us good action to complement it.

Rise of the apes was essentially a reboot/re-imagination though that can pretty much stand on it's own separate from the original series. This movie is Jurassic Park: 4, it's a direct continuation of the last 3.

So i really don't know where there is to go when the last 2 seemed forced? This film could turn out good, however based on the JP sequel track record i don't plan to get my hopes up.

If i knew spielberg was returning that would actually be the only thing that would have gotten me some what excited.

True, however the writers hatched the idea for Rise and brought it to the studio after they drafted the outline. It wasn't like Fox was actively looking to reboot the franchise until they heard the writers' pitch for it.

I hope they came up with a good story and approached Spielberg and Universal about it for JP4, rather than the other way around. If they can reboot the Apes franchise, then something like reviving the JP franchise is doable.
