Jurassic World - Part 10

Saw a comment about Star Wars & I think it's very foolish if you're expecting Star Wars to do these same numbers. This was a freak of nature type of event, it ain't gonna come around all the time.

If he's seen the movie, he probably thinks, "yep, I was right about the sexism, even if I made an ass out of myself when I first said it". Claire's characterization was horribly cliché and sexist, arc and all. She needed a hunky man to make her loosen up and become a badass, which is just as bad as her initial portrayal as a ridiculously uptight female professional. Just because the movie is making a ton of money, it doesn't make Whedon's criticism any less valid, even if making it in the way that he did was in bad taste. Sexism/poor characterization in a movie and box office success are not mutually exclusive of course. Most of Michael Bay's movies are proof of that.

Well, Blue is female and interesting.

I doubt Star Wars will break the opening weekend record (Wrong time of year)... but could have better legs than Jurassic World and achieve a much higher final total.

Plus, Overseas will simply devourer Star Wars.

I don't think this level of expectation for Star Wars is out of line, even remotely. That's a movie that's going to hit on people of all ages, from toddlers to elderly seniors. It looks like it really has the magic of the OT. This was so out of left field because of a stale franchise and the PG-13 rating.

BTW, a big congrats to the filmmakers on the success of this. I love that people showed up to this and [for the most part] enjoyed it.

It's just my opinion. I understand the importance of Star Wars all around the world, but this right here is a phenomenon...a perfect storm of components resulting in a success beyond what anyone could've ever dreamed. It doesn't just happen for every film or franchise. No one here predicted this or even thought about it...and that's how massive successes like this usually are.

Star Wars won't get close to breaking these records. Will it do extremely well? Yes. Will it be as big as Jurassic World? Absolutely not.

Will it break these opening weekend records? Who knows. But if you think Star Wars won't be as big as this, I think you immensely underestimate it.

As well, we don't know yet if Jurassic World will have legs. It may be very heavily frontloaded. That has happened before. However, apart from Inside Out, it doesn't have much competition for the next month, so it's not the most likely scenario. Then again, who knows what word of mouth will be like. Do we have a CinemaScore for this yet?

It has an A CinemaScore.

I'm not sure it will either and I'm a huge Star Wars fan. This is a phenomenon.

I did like how the T-Rex wasn't really all that aggressive, though it may just be chalked up to her poor eyesight. She was just like, I been through this ******** three times before, I'm tired...ya'll need to leave my ass alone.

Yeah. I was once skeptical of SW breaking the record, but if this can do these numbers, don't underestimate SW. And it's got nearly 40 years of built in fandom. Both are pretty comparable and I think we all under predicted this movie's numbers. So if this can surprise us, don't be surprised if SW does incredible.

Great for the franchise. Now I just need to see this thing.

Star Wars will be HUGE. Will it break the OW record? It would be a challenge, but you can't say it's impossible. Nobody would've guessed Jurassic World was going to pull this off. I think Star Wars is very likely to have ridiculously strong legs, especially with the lack of competition. We need to see how JW performs overall now. Breaking the opening weekend will be no easy feat, but I think it'll be closer than people are giving it credit for. For total BO gross, my money is on Star Wars.

But, hats of to JW. It will be interesting to watch the BO cruise past 1 billion and see how much farther it can go from there.

JW and SW have the exact same things working for them, except that SW is even a bigger brand, with a lot of awareness.

You really underestimating the return of Luke, Leia and Han.

I don't expect the OW record for SW. But I expect it to have legs like Titanic and Avatar if it is good.

With the time of year that SW is coming out in, I'm not sure it'll do the same kind of OW business that JW did. The summer box office is much more conducive to big numbers than the box office around Christmas. SW will be dealing with bad weather, people traveling for the holidays, and money being tight after all the holiday shopping. It should still do well at over $150 million to set a new December record but I'm not sure if the conditions are right for it to break JW's record. SW will likely have better legs than JW since it'll not have much competition in the month or so after it releases.

I'm just surprised the general reception is positive around here. I really thought I'd come in here and it'd be a **** show, but it's generally warm here.

I just didn't think this movie was any good. I seem to be in the minority on that but I'm just surprised people are overlooking these huge flaws. Good for people having fun and all, it's just there wasn't fun to begin with due to all the blatant flaws.

I just hated that I didn't have as much fun as people here.

I haven't seen it yet, but I get the feeling people weren't expecting much, so as long as their nostalgia bone was tickled, they are good. This seemed to work on a global scale. It is impressive.

Star Wars kind of fits the bill of a freak of nature type of event. Sure, it surpassing JW record is no way guaranteed. However, of all the 2015 left, its the one that stands the best chance of doing it, and it isn't out of the realm of possibility, given Star Wars was a bigger cultural zeitgeist than JP. Jurassic Park pulls generations of kids who watched the original and now are parents with kids of their own, but Starwars has multiple generations that consist of grandparents, parents, and children today, and they will all show up to it. I say the biggest hurdle for Starwars will be how the weather looks, and the fact many people spend alot in the holidays.

Fair points. There are other sides of it too though, a lot families are together during that time of the year and it's the perfect multi-generational appeal, family movie. And it's not like there's no precedent for winter movies doing really well like LOTR and Harry Potter. I'd have to admit that overtaking the OW record is probably unlikely, but like DarthSkywalker said, if the film is great word of mouth it could really end up just dominating the box office for months.
