Major problem I had with the ending was it was a fan's fantasy wish fulfillment.

[BLACKOUT]I mean having the T-Rex and the Raptor team up to take down the new big bad Dino just felt hokey and stupid to me. [/BLACKOUT]

I also felt like the score was improperly used at times. I think they blew their wad the first time they used the classic JP score on a section of the film that didn't really seem to call for such a grand musical piece.

Honestly Claire, Hoskins, and Dr. Wu were the ones that actually bugged me. The rest ranged from good/decent (Owen, Masrani, etc) to "meh but not terrible" (the kids, the red-shirts, etc). But those three, I didn't really care for their characterizations. And it was kind of a waste of three good actors.

It was just me and my Dad and he loved it, I think us watching JP last night really got him into it lol.

Awesome glad you both did, how do you rank the franchise. Or actually how do you rank the sequels because JP is of course at the top haha.

Let's not talk as if the original Jurassic Park characters aren't clichés (at least from a writing perspective) - You've got the stoic guy (who doesn't want children but softens during the movie to boot), the Eccentric guy, the Santa Claus, the Wiser Girlfriend, the tag-along kids, the Generic Hunter, the Fat Bastard...

Sure, you can make a case of performances and Spielberg's direction giving them some of an edge, but from a writing perspective, they were clichés.

I was going to say this before as well. Very true.

Because a T-Rex ninja-ing her way to the visitor's center and saving the main characters at the very last moment accompained by the movie's main theme isn't hokey or fan-service at all.

That is very true, I think they just got better dialogue that helped the actors make the characters feel more tangible.

:up: I'd rank them;

1. Jurassic World
2. the Lost World
3. Jurassic Park III

I'm not talking about the first film. I'm critiquing Jurassic World on its own merits. In that film that final moment seemed dumb to me. [BLACKOUT]The kid saying they needed more teeth to beat the I-Rex? How much sense does that make? [/BLACKOUT]

Don't get me wrong, the human characters in JP are more itneresting and just plain better than the ones in JW. That's just the way it is. I just think the gap between isn't as huge as some argue.

Also, you could make a case that the dinosaur characters JW are more interesting than the ones in the original, though. Specially the I-Rex compared to the Big One.

Love your review Hunter. Can't wait till tomorrow!

The JP series has never been known for deep and complex characters.

Thats what I figured. I'm predicting that will be my ranking of the sequels as well.

The sequence where the [BLACKOUT]i-Rex chases the brothers off the cliff and then crouches over the edge of the waterfall, waiting for them[/BLACKOUT] was amazing. I was legitimately scared and just thought the CGI was incredible, as they were able to really show the dinosaur thinking. So cool.

1. Jurassic Park.
2. Jurassic World.
3. Jurassic Park III.

4. The Lost World: Jurassic Park.

Seems like what Joss Wheddon said wasn't that off the mark.

Yeah when it comes to Claire, I found myself agreeing with him largely. Which is unfortunate because BDH does her best with what she's given and I was REALLY hoping that they wouldn't be that stereotypical with her.

How could that be considered fan service when there were no Jurassic Park fans prior to that film's release?

If you were truly judging JW by its own merits then that would and does make perfect sense.

Because they sold the movie around the T-rex (it's even on the freaking logo) and the movie ends with it being the uber-badass and "saving the day."

Arguing that there were no fans prior is semantics.

I totally agree with you that it WAS fan service. Heck, Speilberg basically said as much by calling it the "hero" shot that he changed last minute because he knew the kids, I.e. fans, would be upset not to see her again.

My problem is the kid say's we need more teeth. Like, he does the math in his head and decides the problem they're running into is how many teeth are biting into the I-Rex. That's dumb.

Sorry but I don't find Whedon's assessment from that clip any more on point than it was when he made it.

Her character:

Ran the park
Gave orders
Stood up for herself
Took charge
Literally rolled up her sleeves to get dirty and find her nephews
Saved them in the end by unleashing you know who

Just because she had a relationship with a manly dude doesn't automatically render her anything less than what she is - a leading lady.

I read that scene as him saying they needed something bigger, harkening back to Claire's line of "more teeth, bigger, scarier."
