Justice League Justice League Box Office Prediction - Part 3

On the strength of what we’re seeing, this movie is heading towards flop territory. It possibly won’t even make what MoS did. The hit WB will take both financially and reputationally is huge. This is what happens when you keep betting on the wrong horse.

On the bright side, they have a year to truly reflect on what needs to be fixed, learn from past mistakes and figure out a plan. Here's hoping Aquaman, Shazam, Suicide Squad 2 and Wonder Woman 2 are quality films that can help repair the DC brand.

Does anyone give a rat's ass about Suicide Squad 2? I can't think of a film I'd be less interested in.

While us fans would rather see films about Superman, etc. General audiences made Suicide Squad a huge hit and WBs will react as a business (which they are). They’ll go with SS2 because they will feel it’s a safer bet to make money than some of the other films we would want to see.

Now it’s all up to Aquaman. That’s right. It’s up to AQUAMAN to save DC. How ridiculous would that concept be just a couple of years ago.

It'd be funny if it wasn't so heartbreaking. Superman, Batman, and the Justice League will now be shelved in favor of Harley Quinn and a bunch of scrubs I don't even know the names of. WB, what have you done?

I'll ask: what box office threshold would constitute a bomb for JL?

Anything below 700 million would be a disaster IMO. I have to imagine the break even point is at least 800 million.

I think SS2 has a good chance of being huge; there's pent-up anticipation for it in China, for one. The ban there only served to fan the interest in the series.

This is a difficult question to answer. Even if it opens as low as it does it might be able to crawl its way to $750m-ish, which may be enough for them to break even.

I think SS2 would be financial disappointing(if not right out bomb). SS is outright reviled. BvS made a good chunk of change and look what happened to its sequel because of how BvS was regarded. SS made BvS look like Oscar material. I don’t see how anyone is rushing out to see Suicide Squad 2 of all things. The Suicide Squad name has been destroyed.

Can anyone think of a more dramatic box office drop from one film to another in the same series? We're looking at a 45% differential from BvS to JL.

Transformers: The Last Knight was a huge dropoff from Age of Extinction. (OW 44m vs 100m, domestic total 130m vs 245m and worldwide 600m vs 1.1B).

Thing is, it's not just about breaking even or even the profits. This disaster is seriously damaging to the entire brand. After BVS followed by JL, that should never be taken lightly again.

You can't just throw **** at the wall and hope it sticks WB...you'll just end up with a big mess.

So 300 million production budget at least, 100 million marketing budget = 400 million all told (at least). Studio takes about 55% of box office.... yeah 750 million is the absolute floor. Any less and they’re eating it.

But... JL is currently tracking under Man Of Steel, so...

Suicide Squad 2 outgrossing Justice League confirmed, especially if the rumors of The Rocks Black Adam being involved are true :o

Will Smith, Margot Robbie, The Rock... Yup that's a recipe for some big money (especially overseas).

55% is generous considering some regions like China keep as much as 80% of the box office.

Oh, the Rock is potentially involved? Easy money in China then.

The brand is the issue now. WW and Batman should be fine, it's the others who might have been screwed over now. I can't imagine any of those other films, Nightwing, Deathstroke, Gotham City Sirens, Joker + Harley, etc are going anywhere right now.

I bet you anything they put Nicole Kidman all over the marketing and posters for Aquaman, like Marvel did with Cate Blanchett for Thor: Ragnorok.

Kidman's popular again thanks to Big Little Lies (for which she picked up two Emmy awards) and critics love her. Jason Momoa and Amber Heard are both in Justice League and will be associated with it's failure, so I can see Kidman getting a bigger push in promoting the movie, especially as she's by far the most respected actor in the movie.

Going to have to disagree with you there. Suicide Squad is no where near as reviled as BVS, granted it's not as loved as Wonder Woman either, but still...

There was a poll with over 115k votes that ranked the DCEU films and SS ranked above both MOS and BVS (ranked last). Like I said Will Smith, Margot Robbie and The Rock are enough to put butts in seats, throw in a good trailer and reviews (Gavin O'Connor has a good track record) and presto WB has a hit!

Oh, the Rock is potentially involved? Easy money in China then.

Yup! He's rumored to be involved, which is smart on WB's part given Dwayne's popularity.

What do you think was possible reason for the studio to keep hiring Snyder? I am truly curios. You would think that money is number one concern for the studio but Snyder wasn't exactly bringing in money when he was hired for MOS. His previous two movies were financial disappointments and he was still hired for MOS. MOS performed below expectations and he was again hired for BVS. BVS also under performed and he was again hired for JL. I will really like to know about behind the scene circumstances that led WB to keep hiring Snyder at their own loss.

Read somewhere they need 700M to break even. But WB will be hardly satisfied with just 700-750M figure.

$800M is the bare minimum I think WB expects to be somewhat satisfied.

If this gets to the $850-900M range or more, I think WB will be very satisfied at this point. And relieved.

I see many people are focusing on US domestic as being the 'sole' point of judgement as to whether this sinks, floats, or is taken into a corner and sadly put down.

1) Can we all just wait and see what the actual figures are before deciding the film's fate and that of the DCEU in it's entirety.

2) The international (overseas) figures are going to be good. I see $232m is 'out there' as a domestic US figure in total, well, say we get nearer $300m and $440-480 overseas, then it's not so bad, figures WB wanted no, but equally not a disaster either.

3) It strikes me, many people in this sub forum WANT the film to fail, judging by the posts written and the words included.

If people are genuinely DC fans, stand by your film and your universe and go see it, 2, 3, 4 times. Back it because if you value it, see it.

Just because we like DC doesn't mean we're going to support crappy movies.
