that's a racist thing to say. You're saying our cultures have to be confined to it's country and can't be "mish-mashed" in another country or setting. What kind of bull crap is that. Look at America, the most diverse nation in the world, full of all kinds of cultures..

You realise you're an absolute ***** for saying that, dont you? If anything, I'm voicing my displeasure for Hollywoods sheer contempt and ignorance of towards different cultures.

It's like they're saying 'Hey, let's not get bogged down with specifics, Japan/China, who gives a crap, they all look the same anyway'

Highly disrespecful and a bit of a slap in the face. The Chinese have a lot to be proud for, as do the Japanese. Do you really think they'd be happy with the other being presented as having made their achievements?

Now get a clue and think before you dare brand someone a ****ing racist. :cmad: 'A racist thing to say' indeed. Give me a break, ****.

I don't get what you're bickering about, you're so caught up in race and cultures your own antipathy is starting to come out. What so's important where the film is set. Multiple people learn Kung Fu in Japan, Multiple learn Karate in China, so what difference does it makes. You're basically saying the China and Japan are racist, and they don't accept other cultures.

>sigh< You're either not very bright or you're being deliberately antagonisting.

No, I'm not 'basically' saying that. You're making your own assumptions and conclusions here - ones that couldnt be more off the mark if you tried.

And it's apathy like yours that makes the world ignorant to the history, beauty and acheivements of different cultures.

As I said before, get a clue. Learn to read peoples posts thouroughly so that you understand them before you make such amazingly wrong conclusions.

There's no need for the name-calling.

What can I say? It's clear the guy likes to be antagonistic and make infammitory posts.

from the looks of it, Jackie is teaching the kid Kung Fu (Jaden is doing a horse stance [poorly i might add] in one of the pictures), and if that's the case then there's simply no reason to name the film 'the Karate Kid' other than to leach off the name recognition. i don't see why they just can't call it 'the Kung Fu Kid'. if Jackie doesn't end up teaching Jaden Karate at some point in the film then you can bet your @$$ there will be a lot of martial artists that will be turned off if they keep it 'the Karate Kid'. it's not a matter of race or nationality....it's a matter of styles. it's like making a movie primarily about Capoeira and calling it 'the Kwon Do Kid'.

Bingo, DF.

Bingo.

If they called it the Kung Fu Kid, there wouldnt be half as much displeasure.

trust me, people (Japanese/Chinese, Martial artists) will get upset if it ends up being called "Karate Kid". The funny thing however, would be calling it Kung Fu through out the entire movie and 'Karate' is only featured in the title. IGNORANT.

Seriously, like him or hate him, Roland Emmerich had to fight to keep the interracial couple in The Day After Tomorrow and even Will Smith as the lead in ID4. The Hollywood execs are living in a bubble, though with the changes Hollywood has to go through now (lower budgets becoming hits, non-stars leading big movies), it'll have to change.

you know what forget it I was going to respond but it's not worth the lagging of this site, I just typed an entire wall of text and then was lost because I lagged out.

Just... forget I said anything... I don't care anymore. I'm sick of these stupid arguments over entertainment. All it's going to do is turn out as another heated "DB:E" debate over something so dumb. Yes, this argument is dumb to me. I don't even know why I even bothered. I need to stop drinking...... I apologize for the name calling. Good day

How about you knock off the insults too?

Really...we can't have this discussion without insulting each other? :whatever:

Hollywood does need to chill with the race stuff....I mean most of the african american films are gang like movies or drama mainly invovling racism....I like if not only us but all races get their fair share of movies...Not just fighting when it comes to Chinease or Japanease either....Cause when it comes to them thats the most films they get.

With all due respect respect, if someone calls me a racist, I think it's understandable that I'm going to be angry and I'm going to defend myself vehemently.

I make no apologies for defending my character against such a baseless and insulting slur, and to be honest, I wouldnt have felt the need to do so had the moderation been a tad more on the ball.

I hope that every movie with this annoying kid bombs & then maybe one day he will find a new profession. After Will Smith dies then this kid will fade away as Hollywood would not give a damn about this kid

If someone calls you a racist or any other name you feel is unacceptable, report the post and a moderator will deal with the situation. Getting treated unfairly does not give anyone the right to break the rules regarding how to treat other posters on this forum.

We can't be all places at once, so we do count on you to be responsible enough to report anything inappropriate when it happens.

To be fair, I dont think I've ever reported anyone in the entire time I've been a member on the hype - I've always tried to sort things out for myself and it's worked out ok so far.

But you're right - I take what you've said on board and will react differently should such a situation arise again (which I hope it doesnt).

Lolz.

Let's just join in crticising this movie instead, eh?

Not to be a smartass or anything but honestly China doesn't care too much for Japan(at least last time I checked my history)due to what the Japanese did to them in the past, especially in the late 1930's.

To stay on topic, I'll agree that like a lot of remakes this is unnecessary but to be honest Jackie Chan hasn't made a good flick in a while so this is also not surprise to me.

Well, feel free to start whenever you think someone is acting like the names you want to call them in response. Works out better for everyone.

That's all we ask.

And yes, this movie looks like crap.

First of all, Karate originated from China. Okinawa people learned it from the Chinese.

Second. We all know the studio changed it to the "The Kung-Fu Kid" but later changed it back to "Karate Kid" before shooting began. That shows they are aware of the "situation" here. My guess is that Jackie Chan's character was changed to now be a master of karate, not kung-fu. Jackie Chan is talented enough to learn any martial art style in the world. I bet he already knows Karate. Maybe that's the secret for beating the bullies, using a style they are not familiar with.

Here's what I do know:

1) No Japanese actor has 1/10th the box office draw as Jackie Chan.

2) Not calling it "The Karate Kid" would be the equivalent of flushing millions and millions of dollars down the toilet because of some idea that Chinese people are not allowed to practice Karate or some nonsense.

This is a major production. An insane amount of money and smart people are behind it. I assure you they are not going to pretend like Kung-Fu and Karate are the same thing. This unfathomable concept of Karate being taught in China will no doubt be addressed in the script. Or whatever they do, there will be SOMETHING in the script that will allow the title to make sense. Count on it.

You have no business calling it "an injustice" when you have no idea what is in the script. Picture this. Mr. Han now is just a lowly janitor. But he has a rich past we learn about through flashbacks. Decades ago he was living in Okinawa where he learned Karate. Perhaps his character could even be tied to Miyagi in some way. He married a Japanese woman and had a baby. With them he moved back to China and opened up the first Karate dojo in his home province. This "Jap lover" upset a lot of people who are still hateful of the Japanese (which still exists even today), and something tragic occurred and his wife and son were killed. Flash forward, he is a broken man. Just a janitor who no longer practices martial arts. That is until he meets Jayden's character who is the same age his son was when he died. Commence cliche story found in the original film.

You see, I'm not even a professional writer, and I just came up with a story off the top of my head. Wait until the movie comes out or at least details of the script arise before you start freaking out. :cwink:

You're maybe right kaypain.

You know..I think I'm a fair person. The fanboy culture tends to be abosolute and irrational. However, I just don't have high hopes for this movies. I call it my gut feeling.

But I don't think remakes like this can ever replace the original. Look at Charlie and the Chocolate Factory; in no way has it overshadowed the original Gene Wilder version.

the only remake I like was Gary Sinese's Of Mice and Man, and the original wasn't even a cult classic
