Comics Keep the Mask on Supporters Only!!

Doatum said:
Hi all, I am a new member and felt compelled to respond to this thread. So, here goes. I am a long time fan of most things Spider-man. I disliked the movies, love the new suit, and I hate the idea of him being unmasked. It just feels wrong and, frankley, if it were a good idea all supers would have done it a long time ago. Also, I am fairly certain that the folks at marvel have already put a plan in action to fix it. I am sure I am not the first person to come up with this, but have ya heard about "Power Ring"? I guess he has power to alter reality. Not that i read that anywhere, but what else would a ring made from a reality altering cube do? I think Power Ring is a back-up plan for when this bites them in the ass. Lastley, does anyone else feel that they are testing out the idea of un-masking with a character that is a little too important to the whole marvel universe. I know it has been done with iron-man and daredevil, but this somehow feels different and wrong. Sorry, for the long post and if i am repeting anything
.There are so many ways to retcon this mess. I think somebody had the idea of having Superboy-Prime come into the Marvel univers and punch around and change reality that way. HAHA. I'd pay 2.99 plus tax to see that.

Oh....this will be retconned in no time flat. That's why I'm indifferent to it, as opposed to beign angry. The past few years of bad Spidey stories and horrible ramification have numbed me to "shock" and "awe" at this point.

And apparently, we have official conformation that Peter Parker's secret identity as Spider-Man will somehow be restored:

Kevin Smith on the radio yesterday said that plans were in place to undo this "in a few months" and had been in place before the issue even came out.

Thus confirming what we knew all along: that Spider-Man publicly unmasking WAS a sales stunt. Oh well, I'm curious as to how Marvel will retcon this. My money is still on the "Dr. Strange mindwipe theory" that also erases the memory of there ever being a Spider-marriage to boot.

yeaaaaah, you're in the wrong thread.

I'm in the right thread if I want to be in the wrong one.

Can't Strange mindwipe specifically as opposed to all or nothing?....

Assuming, of course, you can rely on Kevin Smith...

But this news has pushed me out of my severe irritation with the issue.

I guess all tbe trendy people who are jumping on the "Cool, Spider-Man outted himself" bandwagon are going to feel like a horse's ass when this is undone (which we said it would be).

I guess the "Unmasking Supporters Only" thread will someday become the "They should have left the mask off Supporters Only" thread! :p

Let's just hope we don't have to wait on Kevin Smith to undo it...

Not to mention some of those who thought that the "unmasking" would be the permanent status quo, as well as those people who bashed the "keep the mask on supporters" for hating change. :o

As Joseph Bessimer once said, and which was mistakenly thought to have been said by P.T. Barnum: "There's a sucker born every minute."

Well, with Dr. Strange pretty much anything goes. There are some stories were he doesn't have the power to mindwipe and in other stories where he does. Basically, he's Marvel's original Deus Ex Machina.

Yeah, well, there's also the Sentry, who has mindwiped the Marvel Universe before with the aid of Reed Richards.

My thing is, Spider-Man has died, like, three times, he's been depowered numerous times, his Aunt May has had a bajillion strokes/heart attacks, and people STILL thought that this extreme of a change would be permanent.

This is dumber than people who thought Superman was going to stay dead and the people who thought Batman's back would remain broken.

Idiots.

Eh... if it gets retconned a lot of those "keep the mask off" fans will probably blame us for it even though Marvel had already planned for it. :o

No doubt. They'll call us "immature fanboys"' and all other sorts of crap, and then, 14 years later, this story will have a thread that begs for it to be redone....just like the fans of the Clone Saga.

I wonder what it would ahve been like if there would have been this much internet traffic back in 1994?

Hmm..? Let me think:

1. In the Other
2. Kraven's last hunt
3. ...?

I believe he died during the Clone Saga.....always confused me because at the time they said he was dying because of the Clone degeneration but then it later became apparent he wasn't the Clone...so what the hell did he die from?

...and if I'm not mistaken.....Vulture killed him once but Ock brought him back because he himself wanted the glory of killing the web-head :)

He died twice during the Clone Saga (Like actual flatlining and passing over to the other side at the end of each issue), and has been killed by Thanos two times

He also died from an accident - a vat of refrigerator coolant fell on him when he was trying to save a little girl. He begged the Higher Being to send the little girl back because it wasn't her fault he screwed up. And they both got sent back to the world of the living.

Spider-Man#17 was the "coolant vat" thing.

Kraven's Last Hunt

Vulture's poisoning (clone saga)

Degeneration (clone saga)

Thanos killed him (Infinity Gauntlet)

The Other

So, that's 6 times. Anyone think of any other instances?

There was actually a whole thread on this a few months ago, which also included deaths from "What If?" There's one story from Guardians of the Galxay #54, in which Vance and the other Guardians find a Shrine to Spider-Man on the planet Mars. They learn that the aliens who made it once had invaded Earth and wiped out almost all of the superheroes. However, Spider-Man resisted and fought them, even when all the other heroes and everyone he knew was dead and gone. After the aliens finally managed kill him, they were so impressed by Spider-Man's courage and self-sacrifice that they left Earth, took his body, and entombed him a place of honor, reguarding him as a great warrior.

THAT'S how Spider-Man should go out, too. Not beaten by some dirty Goth in a purple half-trench coat!!!

I thought Thanos killed him in that issue, but I've never read it, only seen the cover. Nontheless Thanos kills him again in Marvel: The End

and Doom anihilated everyone in Secret Wars 11 as well

After reading this thread, I'm sure glad I stopped reading Spidey years ago. I would be pretty pissed at the mess that's been created.

Unmask Spidey.....NEVER!
