Kenneth Branagh to direct Thor

Where you talking about Captain Obvious or Jerry Goldsmith?

If you were asking where Captain Obvious is - then I think we've had ourselves a little misunderstanding;

Not all-together uncommon on these boards.

Captain Obvious, sir--and I found him, heh

I hope Branagh is confirmed as the director of Thor. This is a tricky film to do and they really need a capable director to pull it off, like Nolan with BB/TDK. I think Branagh is the right choice.

I doubt he would have pulled out of Hamlet if it wasn't basically a done deal.

That's true, considering Branagh is a Shakespeare enthusiast and he must've really wanted to do Thor in order to pull out of Hamlet.

Y'know, reading your post has reminded me that I wanted to post a response to a comment from Evil Twin a page back:-

I really can't see him having an equal committment to Thor as he does for Shakespeare, which even he took extended breaks from.

Truth is, we don't know the extent of Branagh's affinity for Thor.

Hell, he may be an old-school Marvelite for all we know; as I've posted previously - Marvel reprints were readily available in the U.K. as cheap weekly comics in newsagents during the late 60's and 70's.

What's to say Branagh didnt enjoy a few Thor issues when he was younger?

Don't know what to say about this one really...I mean, it's obvious where Marvel is headed with this decision and what they're hoping for from Branagh. But can the the guy pull the vision off? Thor is more 300 and LOTR (throw in some Excalibur) than Shakespeare.

I can see the potential, but I can also see where a leaning to far to the serious side (yes Ang, I'm looking at you) can damage that same potential.

Is Branagh a fan? How much does he know of the material? All of Marvel's best films have had people who are somewhat knowledgeable about the material within the directors ear, if they aren't the director themselves - X-men 2 being somewhat of an exception.

I want to be enthused and I was when I heard Vaughn's vision for a LOTR and Gladiator mix for a Thor film (to be influenced by Days of Thunder). But this...? I don't know....

I like Branagh...but does he want to do this because he's a fan or because he thinks it will challenge him as a director?

Yeah really. I don't want a director who's going to take this property and try to "make it his".

I would be SO happy if we got an AngHulk quality film out of this project.

I've always liked Branaghs work....his 'Hamlet'...to me anyway...is the definitive version

I had no issue with Ang Lees Hulk....people expected 2 hours of 'Hulk Smash' and that's not really what the comics are about.....its something Banner struggles with...there are stories in Incredible Hulk and Hulk where there are 3 or 4 issues without Bruce turning...just my opinion though...hell even the original series, you felt bad for Banner (Bill Bixby)...you just wanted the man to find a cure and live a nice quiet life

I don't hate it, but I believe it to be Ang Lee's worst film and about as good as Superman Returns, which is to say it isn't very.

Yep, good thing he did, craig is cool and all BUT i cant see him as thor...right now he IS bond!! He owns that role.... Plus whoever is cast as thor will BE thor for 2yrs in size due to the POSSIBLE cameo in IM2, then the filming of thor, then 5-8mths thereafter the avengers 2.

God help people who hate good movies.

Branagh has to find that happy medium for Thor. If he does the kind of film that some are suspecting he will cause another Ang Hulk rift. Mind you that doesn't mean his film can't be serious or have substance. All the more reason I like the Gladiator, LOTR slant Vaughn was proposing; it struck a balance between drama, action and fantasy. Granted, we still don't exactly know what direction Branagh wants to take with Thor.

I will say this, the fantasy potential is huge with this film. Imagine Thor and the frost giants going mano-y-mano on the silver screen.

Thor is not as popular a property as Hulk and is certainly nowhere near LOTR status. It probably won't have the money for an LOTR-scale budget.

Sad, but true.

Not if it's done well - no ridiculous Nick Nolte characters and no miscast leads.
