Superman Returns Kevin Smith's experience with Superman (Returns)

but Matt I think he was trying to fight for certain changes to be done, as in as he earlier hinted, trying to work with other producers to change the outset stupid lame mindset of Peters and work away his changes from his compromised draft

But the fact is, he stayed on. Smith at that point was doing alright for himself. Dogma was getting made. He did not NEED the money at the point. He made the CHOICE to stay on the project. Certainly something someone who was financially secure wouldn't do if they were unhappy with the job.

All I am saying is, he bares as much responsibility as Peters. He may run his mouth that it is all Peters fault...but that horrid Superman Lives script still has his name on it.

He wrote that fairly early in his Career, like circa 1997. He makes no qualms that he took it because he liked the money (which was alot to him at that time), and wanted the credit on his resume for being the writer on the new Superman movie. Going in he didn't have a wealth of knowlage about the character of Superman, but he evidently knew more than Peters. Even the other people who worked under Peters knew how he was, but when you pull in 6 figure paychecks, I guess you learn to deal better with A-holes. Besides, as soon as Tim Burton came on, Smith was out the door, and then you had TWO guys working on Superman who didn't know s#!t about the character.

I dont blame Smith for doing it for the Cedit and Paycheck (hell, I probobly would too for 6 figures), but to say stuff like Peters made him grab his ankles is really low class. Im sure your boss has you do things you dont agree with, and you would snap on someone who said he was making you take it on your belly.

Good point, Nivek. You shed some light I hadn't heard before. I had heard that Smith was booted, but prior to my own investigations I had heard that a Superman movie couldn't be made because of FX concerns. In addition, the last two Superman movies were flops and there was always the issue of how to make him a "FRESHER" character. Even though I'll never find the link or article that proves that phrase, I soooo remember reading that.

I had always been happy they hadn't attempted to make another one because I didn't want another flop. I didn't even question Singer's view and I never even heard of Peters at that point until all the BS started to hit the fan. Then I read up on it, and seriously...I just never knew Superman had all those problems. I mean, NICK CAGE!!!!! Who in their right mind thought that was a cute idea? Then I read about the Raider-esque suit, and a more scraggily hair Nick Cage.

Jeeze...What has Peters done for Superman really...except for make people think Singer is the Right Way to go! And even still we are arguing about the vision...

I'm just askin....because you know...what do we like better...Peters or Singer?

Smith was outed as soon as Tim Burton came on, and had all these ideas that Peters loved (which meant trowing out all the traditional Superman Elements). I talked with Jason Mewes pretty in depth about this when they were shooting Dogma in Pittsburgh in 1997, Smith at the time had some pretty bad blood against Burton about it, which is hinted at in his tone at the end of his John Peters rant in the "Evening with Kevin Smith" spoken word documentry.

I wouldn't doubt it. I mean seriously...just going on speculation with no pure facts. I can't believe that a Superman movie couldn't have been made after the success of Batman and Batman Returns (the two Burton movies)...excluding the difficulites with FX... that was a ripe oppurtunity, and it sounds just like the time that Smith was hired. However, we get more issues for a Superman movie. Then we get Superman v. Batman???? I remember reading the tid bits of info on Greg's page at Yahoo, and it sounded like everything related to Superman was a big giant cluster fudge.

From my standpoint, Peters is the only one in the line of fire when it comes to criticism of this issue. He's had the project for what...ten years...more??? Yet, it is common knowledge that any Superman projects prior to Singer's vision was pretty much garbage.

So again...who brought up Peters:confused:

:o Exactly, Huntress people don't realize how lucky we really are that Peters didn't ruin Superman on the big screen. No matter what happens though, there'll always be whiners and crybabies who moan about every little thing! Who cares about 'em. Let them stay home and sulk; while the rest of us go and support Returns.

That is the single greatest video ever posted on these boards.

I have the dvd this was taken off, that Giant spider thing gets me every time :D

Is it found in local video and dvd stores? I've never seen it. Looks interesting.

Hahaha that was great

Are there any more video interviews with Kevin Smith that are as funny?
