On other news, Sony just said they are going to copy Microsoft, which i was positive it would happen.
What started by being a more precise "Wiimote", the Sony motion control is starting to be closer to Natal than the Wii.
Sony just announced that their new technology will face recognition (facial recognition software would "detect gender and even the age of the face, separate facial features such as the nose, eyes and ears, and even detect whether you’re smiling or not.), gesture recognition and, skeleton tracking.
Who else is going to bet that objects scanning will be a reality too?

I see a lawsuit coming out, or an all out war between Microsoft and Sony.

Interacting with games without using a controller is apparently a really big deal. Microsoft's got its "Project Natal" thing and Sony has its magic motion wand. Oh, wait. That's technically a controller. That you hold. Fear not, as, during the Develop Conference going on right now in the UK, Sony has revealed that the existing PlayStation Eye camera can recognize you -- well, specifically your face -- and track your skeletal movement without getting all touchy-feely.

SCEE says that it already has libraries available for developers who want to integrate the technology into their games. Develop magazine's site quotes developer relations head, Kish Hirani, who divulged that the software was developed by SCEE R&D along with outside developers.

So, basically, according to them the already existing PSEye has this feature built in already. Which obviously implies that they've had this planned for quite some time. The PSEye was on the market well before even rumors of Natal existed.

Really, I think it's time to give the 'Sony copying Natal' angle a rest. Sony does it's fair share of copying in the market, but there's really no indication that this is one of them.

oh please. MS isnt going to be suing Sony for anything, especially since Natal is in many ways an advanced PS Eye (which suceeded their EyeToy), technology that Sony already has on the market and has been working on for years. You know, their motion capture based cameras with the microphone which was first demoed back in 1999. Really who's "copying" who?

Deja Vu! I could have sworn we brought that up to him before.....

Maybe he missed it.

It's pretty easy for me since I know that there's 1 thing game companies (and all the other companies that aren't in gaming) care about: the money in my wallet.

Even though I have a 360, I don't have to buy every single game that comes out on it, nor do I have to get every single "exclusive title". I get the ones that interest me. If they don't, I pass. Same with Sony and Nintendo, though it's easier since I'm not the type of person that buys a new system for a game or two.

I do the same. I think most people do. It's just a few nuts who firmly believe that one system is superior to all others for no real reason.

It's just a part of human nature I think. There's always a pretty large percentage of people who 'take sides' on nearly everything for no real, rational reason.

And even if there is a somewhat rational reason (or a reason, at the very least), people tend to hold onto their preconceptions for a good, long time after those reasons have become irrelevant. I didn't like Sony much after that god-awful marketing campaign they used during the PS3's launch, and it took me a couple years to get over it to the point of actually purchasing a PS3.

Microsoft just sent out a self-congratulatory press release about Project Natal, highlighting the publishers and developers currently toiling away on games for the upcoming motion control system.

Those listed are:

Activision Blizzard
Bethesda
Capcom
Disney Interactive
Electronic Arts
Konami
MTV Games
Namco Bandai
Sega
Square Enix
THQ
Ubisoft

While some of the larger companies could be working on anything, others given an insight into some possible first-wave Natal titles. MTV Games? Rock Band. THQ? UFC.

In addition to those companies, Microsoft will also be holding a panel at TGS later today where Capcom's Keiji Inafune, Segas Toshihiro "Brown Man" Nagoshi and Hideo Kojima will all be talking Project Natal, where they will "discuss the possibilities for the groundbreaking new experiences that can only be achieved with Project Natal".

Brown Man, Kojima and motion control? Oh, we'll be there. Will let you know what goes down.

That's an impressive list, but I wonder if those developers are commited to making Natal "exclusive" games for lack of a better word or just have some kind of Natal functionality in their games?

First bad news about Natal, it will be expensive.

According to Variety, Bach said that the pricing will start high and decrease over time. "Relative to Natal," said Bach, "we'll see how the pricing cost works out. But people should except that it will go through the usual price curve."

Is that a surprise. Initial speculation was that it would be $100+. The techbnology never looked cheap especially since MS looked serious about developing it into not being a simple piece of crap. Pricing unforunetly may be the biggest thing against it

It wasn't going to be sold for 19.99 if you call within the next 10 minutes.

In other news, in a recent interview for OXM, Mark Rein (Epic Game´s VP) said they are very excited about project Natal

"I have no idea where we're going from a game standpoint, but from an engine standpoint, it's definitely cool stuff and we will support it. I think any future Xbox games we make will have some Natal support," he said. "We always want to have something that exploits the unique capabilities of a platform."
"I think everyone will do something that exploits Natal once it's out there and everyone has," Rein voiced. "So will people be able to benefit from it? Yes. And then if they want to make that 'oh my god' really cool Natal experience, well, we've got the engine for that. I'm pretty psyched about it."

Does that means that Gears of War 3 will use Natal?
Only time will tell, but one thing i agree with Rein, the moment Natal comes out, every 360 game will use it in some capacity.

Natal launch details leak from secret Microsoft tour

MCV can this week reveal first details regarding the launch of Microsoft's Project Natal.

Our sources say the innovative controller-free 360 camera will be released worldwide in November 2010.

This and other details have emerged following a behind-closed-doors Microsoft tour of UK publishers and studios – the format-holder has been demoing the tech and detailing its 2010 plans in order to spur more development support.

Microsoft is planning to manufacture 5m units for day one release, with a mix of console and camera plus solus SKUs expected.

The device should cost under £50 when sold solo. One publishing source says Microsoft is “trying to get as close as possible to ‘impulse buy’”. Another even says the camera could even retail for just £30.

14 games are being readied for launch.

Natal was unveiled earlier this year at E3 in Los Angeles. The device uses an array of cameras and microphones to track player movements.

Activision, Bethesda, Capcom, Disney, EA, Konami, MTV, Namco Bandai, Sega, Square Enix, THQ and Ubisoft all committed to make games for the device in an announcement made at last month's Tokyo Game Show.

It’s expected a large chunk of launch games will be first-party offerings from studios such as Rare with third-party games to follow. It is not known if Lionhead’s widely-discussed Milo, which uses advanced AI to create realistic characters, will be in the mix.

Natal will arrive almost five years to the day after the Xbox 360 and is perceived by many, Microsoft included, as a way to lengthen the lifespan of the hardware without resorting to a new console launch. The first Xbox was sold in the UK for only three years before 360 hit.

This summer Xbox studios boss Phil Spencer told MCV the 360 still ‘hasn't peaked’. “When Natal arrives it will feel like a new generation has come,” he said. “I see it like the launch of 360 in November ‘05. Consumers don’t want another $400 box right now.”

Sony has said it will launch PS3’s motion-sensing wand peripheral – movement of which is tracked by the already-available PlayStation Eye camera – before Microsoft’s kit in spring 2010. However, so far the Japanese firm has kept details of the launch closely under wraps.

Sounds interesting, if true. I'm interested in both Natal and Sony's motion controller, but it all depends on the games they'll have.

What kind of world do we live in, when a videogame peripheral is considered a better invention than a vaccine to help against one of the worst pandemics ever? Wow.

How the hell is NATAL better than the AIDS vaccine and teleportation

That's pretty goddamn dumb. I mean it's not been released yet has it? Isn't too early to even be considered for the list? It definitely doesn't deserve to be above AIDS vaccine, that's actually borderline disgusting

IDK man. I never play the "big corporation wrote a big check" conspiracy card, but come on. This is just way too fishy to me. I could understand it maybe making the list in 2010 when it is released and proves itself to be revolutionary and not a niche item. However, no matter what year, it should never, ever be placed ahead of a vaccine for something that has killed millions of people for the past 20 years.

how can it be considered best invention when it hasnt even been released?
