Knight Rider 2008: The Thread

I don't really care for the techno version of the theme and don't have that commitment to watch a weekly show as I used to.

What's techno about it? It pretty much just devolves into a generic pop-rock guitar riff after the opening portion.

It's actually one of the things that infuriates me about the show, 'cause the theme really was one of those iconic themes that, if you're not gonna fully committ to recreating it, you just shouldn't do it at all. How are you gonna have the opening part of the theme, but completely drop the main melody. I've heard better covers of the theme by fans on YouTube!

The production value is top notch? What show were you watching?

Production value doesn't mean quality. I means the show looked expensive. Clearly with the fancy CG overlays and special effects in every other shot, the people who made this show had plenty of moolah to throw around.

Viper's transformation effects were better than this!! And I'm talking old school NBC Viper!! That was 15 years ago!!

The TV-Movie had a lot of potential to be an interesting TV show......

This, however, just looked like they took that potential and flambe'd it. I really didn't like it, the Acting was poor from just about everyone... Even Kilmer sounded half asleep with his lines...

Might not bother to watch next weeks episode and, IMHO, i can't see this lasting a whole season.

Shame though....

I actually thought it was better than the movie, but the movie was so dreadful that the TV show still manages to suck. Having had a chance to sleep on watching the episode, I think that it was really quite crappy, and I can't say I see myself coming back for a third round of punishment. Sure, the original show was cheesy, but not in the sense that you could almost hear the actors gritting their teeth as they delivered their lines. This is obviously a pretty high budget show, so why they producers settled for such low quality actors, directors, and writers is beyond me. I'd have rather had a solid, character driven show with a cool car chase in every episode than this over-CG'd under acted crap.

Take a look at Sarah Connor Chronicles, specifically the first season: the producers knew that for the show to work, the focus had to be on the characters and actors. The show has a pretty darned near perfect cast IMO, and the actors all deliver great perfomances every week. Some of the special effects aren't that great, but at least they know better than to over use them, and not to make them the focal point of the series.

With Knight Rider, you've got really good special effects for a TV show, but the actors are horrible, and the characters they play are a bunch of friggin' ******s! I honestly don't like ANY of the characters in Knight Rider except for Kitt, because he's at least cool and not ******ed. Unfortunately though, it takes more than a cool car and lots of FX to make a good show. And given how Kitt's powers seem to magically evolve to accommodate new product placement from Fix Or Return to Dealer, I wouldn't be surprised if next week we see Kitt transform into a mini van or some other dumb crap like that. Transforming into a pickup truck twice his size set the precedent, so it's only logical that they'll continue to exploit such a stupid but convenient advertising tool.

I am a long time KR fan and understood the original show and what is was about.

I thought the new show's pilot earlier this year wasn't great, however, the series premiere was a good improvement.

Look, this is KNIGHT RIDER! Not CSI or all that other melodramatic crap that people seem to like these days.

The original KR was fun and never took itself too seriously. The stunts were outrageous (ie: KITT and KARR turbo boosting and coming at each other while KARR blows up upon impact and nothing happens to KITT) but what the hell -- it was entertaining!

And that's what I got from this new show -- I was entertained.

I could do without the sexual references and so on, however, I think the first episode did its job: show the car doing some kick ass ****. Sure the acting was below average but then again I got what I wanted: the CAR doing some neat ****.

Just because the original was cheesy doesn't mean the new version has to be cheesy. There's never an excuse for bad writing and bad acting.

Yeah, it's almost like they're trying to capitalize on Transformers. Why does NBC insist on using recycled ideas when they're doing so bad?

No. They are not trying to capitalize on Transformers.

Look, when the original KITT showed up on TV way back in 1982, it was something unreal: a car that could talk and was virtually bullet proof with the rest of the gadgets it had.

Now, its 2008 and everyone can have a talking car with GPS -- so the producers felt they needed to introduce some new "wow" elements, thus, the transformation.

Then again, doesn't anyone remember "Super Pursuit Mode" from KR's 4th (and last) season??

Frankly, I am glad the new show is CHEESY!!

I'd be ticked off if KR was turned into some boring, melancholy, overdramatic pile of turd, which is what most of the primetime so-called 'action' shows are these days as opposed to the 80s when shows were....FUN.

Ummm...no.

No one is saying it needs to be some boring, melancholy, overdramatic pile of turd, but it's been over twenty years!! Lots of shows that are primarily intent on just being fun are still written with a certain degree of wit and intelligence. Everything meant to make this new incarnation of Knight Rider fun and cool seems really forced, not to mention poorly executed. Just about every word of dialogue out of Zoe's mouth was out of place and/or remarkably vapid. No one is saying it needs to be a dead serious action drama, but don't insult our intelligence! For instance, why is Sarah even in the field?!? She's not trained for anything like this, even in the slightest. If she has to do something in regards to the Knight Rider Project, she should assist her father back at the "KITT Cave" She could have served the same function as Billy at the beginning. Why send Sarah, when you've got Sydney Poitier's character, you know. . . .the FBI AGENT?!?! And again, how are you gonna fake Mike Traceur's death, and still have him walking around with his own face!! His "death" was headline news, and they plastered his mug all over the report! if anything, faking his death made him even MORE conspicuous. Beforehand, no one knew who the hell he was, and he'd be free to assume identities from mission to mission.

And even if it's just the first episode, it could have done a better job of trying to accomplish something other than faking Mike's death. Resolve something. Capture at least ONE bad guy, anything!!

not like it mattered for my opinion,
but that show sucked.i watched it for 8 mins and off the tv went the only good thing i liked was that smoking hoooottt babe, but that aint enough to get me to watch this show.

I didn't think the show was too bad, it was chessy fun, I'll probably still watch since there's nothing much on Wednesday.

The series premiere of Knight Rider only pulled a 4.9/8 at 8pm.

I wonder how much this was affected by premiering it a week early online and the availability of downloads on iTunes. The ratings for ep 2 might prove interesting.

The site has been updated. The numbers are now 7.3 million viewers and the rating/share is 2.4/7.

The premiere of Knight Rider barely got out of the garage. It was third in viewers and the 18-49 demo, and a punishing 4th in the 18-34 demo.

so any bets? half a season or the third episode and it's cancelled

I will sauy i liked the new version of Turbo Boost.....nice touch with the swivelling exhausts there....

I liked it, if it was at all trying to be serious then I'd criticize it to pieces till it ran crying home but since its gone the cheesy dumb fun route I quite enjoyed it, actually quite refreshing to see a ridiculously plotted sci-fi-ish show nowadays amongst all the more drama based sci-fi we keep getting.

I thought it was garbage. TV movie was mildly entertaining when it hit the screens but this is just crap. I'm willing to give it another episode but I foresee cancellation all over this show if it doesn't do a 180. I think if cancellation does come I suspect just before half a season.

Thought it was good for what it is. Bar far not the best thing I've seen. But also not the worst.

The minor flaws I can look over (like not sweating while KITT's on fire, or KITT's new transformation sequences). They're easy enough to ignore or improve upon as they get into the groove of putting a weekly show together. I did prefer KITT's transforming in the pilot: the nanotech transformation where his skin 'flowed' into shape. It would also be easier to explain how he can get bigger (truck-sized) because it would just be his skin shifting out into different positions. Instead, they've got components coming out where there just isn't any room for them (like the hubcaps). Cool to look at, but requires a large suspension of disbelief.

Major flaws. Writing and directing. That's right, I didn't say acting. Why? Because we knew how they'd act from the movie, and they actually acted better in the movie then this first episode. It means they are capable of acting at least a little better when they get a director that can pull the performance out of them. Other signs the director was lacking included the reactions of background characters. Watch when Mike is 'killed'. Everyone screams and runs. Good. When the woman walks onto the train, everyone is calm and thinks nothing of it. Bad. They should have been flinching and either running out, or hiding back further on the train. At the very least they should have seemed really curious about what was going on with all the cops and dead body (assuming they missed the actual shooting). We'll see what happens as they get more comfortable in their roles and other directors come in.

As for the writing. Formulaic, yes. But that's not really the problem. When you're just starting out, you stick to the formula because you'll turn away the fewest number of people. But it was rather weak. Some dialog could have been better, and there were plotholes. For example, when they remove the oxygen to snuff the fire, if KITT runs on gas (like in the movie) or some other combustible fuel, how could his engine have run without oxygen to ignite the fuel. (Maybe he doesn't run on it anymore, but they didn't explain it.)

Ok, now general nitpicking. I call it general because I see it on every show. If your having a character use a computer with a window based operating system, it's not a crime to have them use a mouse every once in a while. You can't do overthing they do with just a keyboard. Well, I guess you can, but a mouse sure makes things easier. :p On the other hand, the Microsoft Surface-type system they were using was pretty cool. :D

Even Bay's transformers had the time to use mass shifting

I think Knight Rider would be better off as occasional TV movies of the week, that way the movie format would give the writers  a better storyline so as not to hinder on weekly storylines.

I had to work so I missed the premier, but I just watched it online and I enjoyed the show. I thought that whole napalm missile chase with KITT on fire was pretty thrilling.

There were some eye roll moments, but overall I can definitely see the potential of the series. They can only get better. This was a fun 45 minutes and since I don't have anything else I like to watch on Wednesday I will be tuning in next week.

This is from Yahoo news:

Despite the huge promotional push from NBC and the ratings success of the TV movie, "Knight Rider" debuted to disappointing ratings with only 7.3 million viewers. That's not so hot and could mean that this remake is in trouble.

Where was that huge audience way back for the TV movie, beats me.

sure people watched it for the nostalgia but it doesn't have enough pull for a full series. *sigh* none of the Knight Rider attempts have done well

KR 2000- decent ratings but no series
KR 2010- uh yeah that would have done well :P
Team Knight Rider- yeah..........
