LGC 2006: Konami Calls Foul on Microsoft
Winning Eleven is not exclusive to Xbox 360.
by Sam Kennedy, 08/25/2006

At its press conference earlier this week, Microsoft made the announcement that Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer (known as winning Eleven to us) and EA's FIFA Soccer would both see a year's exclusivity on the Xbox 360, making its next-gen console "the platform" for soccer fans. This was seemingly a huge win for Microsoft, considering how popular Soccer is in the European and Asian territories.

Now, however, we're starting to hear a different story. Speaking with Winning Eleven producer/creator Shingo 'Seabass' Takatsuka earlier today, we learned that Microsoft made claims that were untrue. "The presentation was misleading," he told us. "We never said exclusive for one year on the next-gen platforms. We said this year. We were agreed that it was this year."

According to Takatsuka, Microsoft's claims have caused some issues for Konami (with Sony, no doubt), and he definitely wants to set the record straight. Winning Eleven is exclusive to the 360 for this year, but it's likely a case of necessesity (the PS3 game, which he confirmed is being worked on, isn't far enough along in development) rather than some major exclusivity deal with Microsoft. The PS3 version could ship as early as next spring, he admitted, though no timeframe has been set yet. The only thing certain is that it will absolutely not release before January 1, 2007.

Interestingly, although EA has no official comment on the matter yet, sources indicate that FIFA may not have a year's exclusivity window for next-gen platforms either.

This is similar to the GTA IV situation, at least Microsoft didn't outright lie this time. Every company lies!

Or so the Germans would have you believe

It really just sounds like a slight miscommunication that got magnified.

It's more so selective wording to give a certain impression without lying. It's pretty smart.

This thread is just another one on the "Worthless Threads Zenien Makes" list, which is one of the longest lists of all time.

Oh come on. If it where Sony lying, they'd be slammed by half the board.

I thought making the games exclusive for an entire year was an odd move. Given the popularity of football, and how few games there will be in the early days for PS3, it would be a good opportunity to shift some sales. Limiting two big franchises like that would be a daft move.

YEAH, AND A SLICKLY WORDED HALF-TURTH, IS STILL BETTER THAN A COMPLETE LIE, I.E. "4D GRAPHICS" AND "120 FPS".

120FPS wasn't a lie, as ANY system currently out can do that. It was a misrepresentation.

And the 4D comment is so out of left feild you can't quantify it as a lie because no one knows what the heck he actually meant. The 4th Dimension is time...

Spring launch was a lie, saying they couldn't see not making the Spring launch was a lie, saying their software was ready for Spring was obviously a lie, but those two comments? Not so much.

IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY, THE "120FPS" COMMENT WAS IN REFERENCE TO "REAL-TIME GAMEPLAY", DISPLAYED AT 1080P...........WHICH WOULD BE A LIE, UNLESS THEY WERE JUST TALKING ABOUT A TECH DEMO, WITH VERY LITTLE DETAIL AND/OR "ACTION". AS FOR THE 4D PART, KEEP IN MIND THIS WAS FROM THE SAME PEOPLE WHO THINK THEIR ANCESTORS ACTUALLY FOUGHT GIANT CRABS IN EPIC BATTLES........SO THINKING THEIR "SUPERCOMPUTER" COULD PERHAPS MANIPULATE THE FABRIC OF TIME IS NOT A "STRETCH"......FOR THEM. :O

It's such poor taste to make light of their plight durring the great crab wars. You just don't get it man, those people survived that ****, you don't just go making a joke about it!

On a serious nitpicky note they said based on Japanese history. Seewhatididthere :o

This is ****ing typical bull**** microsoft lies.

What next? Making up CGI amazing movies and pretending they are real games for a bloated, over priced new media player?

Thank god we still have sony

Xbox 360 is European Home to Next-Gen Soccer

Winning Eleven could still hit PS3 soon, however.

by Jonathan Miller

August 28, 2006 - The Xbox 360 will be the exclusive home of next-gen soccer for the next 12 months... in Europe.

Next-gen versions of FIFA 07 and Pro Evolution Soccer 6 are coming to the Xbox 360 and not the PlayStation 3, as announced at the Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany last week. That is true.

It is important to note that "Pro Evolution Soccer 6" is Konami's soccer title for the European market. "Winning Eleven Pro Evolution Soccer 2007," however, is Konami's title in North America and Japan. While the content is basically the same, the two titles are in fact separate. The 12-month exclusive deal pertains to PES 6 in Europe only.

In effect, Konami is free to publish a next-gen soccer title on the PlayStation 3 or Wii, well, as early as tomorrow, in any region outside of Europe.

PES6 producer Shingo "Seabass" Takatsuka told IGN at Leipzig that a PS3 version of the game is currently in development and could be released as early as spring 2007.

A next-gen FIFA 07, on the other hand, will only be released on the Xbox 360. After speaking with reps at EA, we learned that there is no signed, sealed and delivered "deal" of exclusivity. FIFA 07 is "exclusive" to the Xbox 360 because it isn't ready to be released on the PS3 until about this time next year. Quite simply, Microsoft scored an exclusive by default.

Guess what? The 360 is also your home for FIFA 07.
To sum up next-gen soccer as it currently stands for the next year: Yes on 360. No on PS3, at least not in Europe. Capisci?

The confusion began when Microsoft proudly proclaimed that the Xbox 360 is the home of next-gen soccer and the only place to play next-gen soccer games and your center of all things next-gen soccer, etcetera, etcetera. Konami and EA were also a bit vague in their glowing appraisals of the deal.

"We're very pleased to be bringing the next-generation edition of Pro Evolution Soccer 6 exclusively to Xbox 360 until late summer 2007,"said Hans-Joachim Amann, Head of European Product Management at Konami Digital Entertainment. "The power of Xbox 360 takes our critically-acclaimed franchise to new heights of realism, playability, and fun. We know true football fans will enjoy the new experiences that Pro Evolution Soccer 6 on Xbox 360 will offer."

Said Hughes Ricour, FIFA 07 producer: "The only place gamers can enjoy the next-generation edition of FIFA 07 is on Xbox 360. We love developing for this thing!"

Turns out that all the talk applies to Europe only. EA hasn't announced another soccer title and outside a surprise UEFA game, the next EA soccer product will likely be FIFA 08. The window is still open, however, for Winning Eleven in North American and Japan.

Guess the 12-month exclusivity deal is in place for the only region that matters most - Europe. ;)

I thought the 12 month exclusivity deal thing was already dubunked? The 'exclusivity' was until the end of the year, not for a year, and that was only because the game wouldn't be ready for the other consoles.
