In all honesty they need to make more toys and have more tie-ins. I figured this type of flick would be ripe for that. Toy commercials on Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network as well as tie-ins with Subway or some **** like that would work wonders.

The 1976 remake had tons of marketing and product tie-ins including one with Coca-Cola and that movie banked.

Legendary has always seemed to be pretty bad at all that kind of thing.

It's looking closer to a flop to me. Movie has no buzz. I thought everyone was into king Kong.

I think modern "Kongmania" extended as far as what we saw with King Kong 2005.

That film had a lot going for it especially Jackson just coming off the LOTR trilogy and that film just performed ok at the BO even with good reviews to boot.

True. They really hammered it home in the marketing campaign that it was from the director of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. It also helped that Adrien Brody was a recent Oscar winner and Jack Black was still pretty popular at the time.

Oh. Kong is just so iconic. I think the goofy tone with Reilly was the wrong move. First trailer was perfect.

That second trailer definitely killed my enthusiasm.

Legendary probably has tighter purse strings than Disney. I doubt Kong has the marketing budget that BatB has.

They were recently bought out by a Chinese billionaire, and yeah you're right about WB distributing.

Which is why I am a bit confused. You'd think money and talent in marketing wouldn't be an issue.

I suspect that the real issue is that WB has been pretty crappy towards Legendary which is what drove them to Universal for a while to begin with. Basically with the way the distribution works and the grosses are split up, WB stands to make back its money when the movie does moderate business internationally. They don't really care what happens to it here. With Legendary flipping the bill for production, they're the ones who stand to lose their money.

This is exactly what happened to Pacific Rim. Warner Brothers more or less hung it out to dry in terms of the marketing, reportedly not even spending its entire advertising budget, not pursuing cross promotional deals etc.

with a 190 million dollar budget kong is only tracking at a 38 mill opening weekend and a 100mill total domestic if holds true flop on the way thats well below godzilla numbers godzilla did 90 mill opening weekend and 200 mill total domestic on a 150mill budget when i first saw the trailer for kong i thought it was going to be a massive hit

This movie actually looks good so I'd be sad to see it do poorly.
