Larry Fong will not be working on "Superman"

I'm sorry if this is old, but I haven't seen it posted.

Anyways, it looks like Zack's Director of Photography Larry Fong won't be working on Superman.

Q: Will you continue to work with them on “Superman”?

ZS: They’re not working on “Superman” but I’ll probably work with them in the future.

This is terrible news, imo. All of Zack's movies have beautiful cinematography because of Larry. Also, Bill Hoy won't be the editor...

Looking at his past films with Synder,I was always sure thats what the movie would up looking like.

normally, i'd agree...but he's working on Super 8 which doesn't look like any of Larry's previous work. regardless, this could be either good or bad news depending on who they end going with. i just hope they decide to go with Snyder's go-to costume guy...

Well, according to IMDB -- Alex McDowell is the PD for Superman, and Helen Jarvis (Watchmen) is back as one of the art directors.

It'd be interesting who Snyder gets as DOP and editor for Superman...

This can't be good news. Larry is, im my opinion, the best cinematographer in Hollywood, and he works so well with Zack.

Well that sucks because his work on Watchmen was amazing. I'm kinda curious to see who Snyder's DP will be for Man of Steel.

I believe this is the reason why Fong won't be involve in Man of Steel.

Snyder: Yeah, you know, I really wanted to, but they're all out on other movies now, so I don't know if they'll be able to, because "Superman" is going so fast that none of my people expected it was going to be so quick and that I'd have another movie up so fast, and "Superman" has come pretty quick. Because they try and get their next geese in line, so I'm kind of having to go to another team for "Superman" but I will be back to my people as soon as I can.

I totally agree. I don't think any of Snyder's previous work has the right look for Superman either. They should get the guy who did Star Trek.

... Like who? In everyone of Zack's movies I find myself constantly saying, "Wow, that's a really nice shot." I rarely do that to other movies.

Larry Fong isn't the end all be all of cinematographers. it sucks that Zack won't be able to utilize him, but at the same time...this could turn out to be a good thing. there are plenty of other cinematographers that are more than capable of creating the striking visuals needed for this movie to become a success.

Sure, I could have done that, but I wanted to know what DPs he thought should be used for the movie.

They're a little too mainstream, but I'd be interested to see what someone like Roger Deakins or Januz Kaminski could do with Superman, or a Phil Meheux. I'd even give Newton Thomas Siegel another shot. I thought Superman Returns was well shot, but just poorly lit, though I think that was more of a decision by Singer to fit the tone of the movie and not Siegel's.

well i'm not trying to list a whole slew of the, but Daniel Mindel (Star Trek, Mission: Impossible 3, Shanghai Noon) would be great. Janusz Kaminski (Minority Report, Catch Me If You Can, Artificial Intelligence) would also be an inspired choice. Roger Deakins (True Grit, No Country for Old men, A Beautiful Mind) would also be nice to see. it would even be nice to see Dion Beebe (Collateral, Memoirs of a Geisha, Miami Vice) tackle this project.

I don't think it's terrible at all. I think it is a good thing that Snyderwill be working with another team. At this point I think he needs to also, for him to grow as a director.

While I think Larry Fong is very good at what he does, I haven't really been a fan of the look he and Snyder always seem to create (together I feel they're responsible for why I think all of Snyder's post-Dawn of the Dead movies look video game-y), especially for Superman, so I can't say I'm too disappointed. As others have pointed out, there are PLENTY of wonderful DPs out there who could do a great job on this.

I agree with all of the ones DF mentioned. Those guys are stellar. And I'd add Matthew Libatique (Iron Man 1 & 2, The Fountain, Black Swan, Cowboys & Aliens), Emmanuel Lubezki (basically the go-to DP for Terrence Malick and Alfonso Cuaron), Alwin Kuchler (Sunshine, Hanna), Bruno Delbonnel (Amelie, Across the Universe, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince), Don Burgess (Spider-Man, Contact, Book of Eli, Source Code), and Greig Fraser (Bright Star, Let Me In) - though I see he's shooting that Snow White and the Huntsman movie that seems to be running parallel to this, so he's probably unavailable.

I understand why people think it's a shame, but i'm seeing it as a positive.

While I have complete faith in Snyder's ability to translate the script onto the screen, I think it'd be tempting, when working with the same people he's worked with before, to do something similar... and while I think Snyder is quickly becoming an Auteur, I kind of hope that stamp isn't so obvious in Superman... like with Burton's Batman, it was just so obviously Burton, that it felt less Batman to me.

However, even though there's many good DPs out there, I seriously doubt that they could get Kamiński, Lubezki, Deakins or Libatique for Man of Steel.
