Lee Bermejo and Brian Azzarello's Joker Graphic Novel

Ok . . .

But Azzarello didn't not give her dialogue because he thought she had nothing of value to say, but because he thought he could develop the character better by having her say nothing at all. The same would not have been true of Croc. A big black guy in a wife beater just standing there isn't nearly as interesting as a sycophantic, unhinged stripper with a butcher knife standing there. Croc needs dialogue to establish his character and persona, Harley needs just the opposite.

Christ people try to pick fights on this site like nowhere else.
If you're talking about me I wasn't trying to pick a fight. I'm just saying I find it odd she didn't speak at all. I didn't expect her to be as mouthy and annoying as she is in most books/cartoons but no dialouge whatsoever?

Sorry, just trying to help. I've been away a few day because of Halloween. I didn't know it had already been answered. Sorry I haven't kept up.

Does anyone have any other questions they needed answered to help understand the reasons for things being the way they are in the book?

No no, I wasn't bustin your balls, I was just saying that we now have definitive answers from both of the creators, so we can finally put this to rest.

I'm just wondering how the law enforcement were completely non-existent. Especially in regards to Joker, and even Two-Face.

The way Two-Face was portrayed in this I would imagen he owns the majority of the police. As for Joker not getting hassled by them? Who knows, maybe it's because the places he frequents in the story are deep underground, so much so that the police never heard of them or are afraid to go. Much like the Narrows in BB. They only go in when they have re-inforcements. And also, the massive shoot out is between off duty cops, obviously paid off by Two-Face, so you can say Joker had a run in with the law.

thats basically the vibe i got from the book. It was a gangs of New York except with a few modifications.

That still doesn't really explain why Harley doesn't speak.
The way I see it is, because the story is seen through the eyes of Jonny Frost, a character who, for the greater part of the book, strongly admires and idolizes Joker, not much attention is paid to Harley because Frost's attention is constantly on Joker. He is aware of Harley's presence, but doesn't really pay it much mind, so anything she might have said, he didn't hear or care about enough for it to be included in his recollection of the story.

Holy crap, that makes me wanna get this even more than I already did. :wow:

As I've expressed quite a few times on the TDK boards, I'm a HUGE fan of DDL, and Bill the Butcher in particular.

I linked that image because we see this same shot redone with joker and harley...(joker crying) in the graphic novel. I really loved the graphic novel. very intense very in your face. Greatness.

In comparision to a cinematic experience,
Its Martin scorsese, coen bros, chris nolan, and quentin tarantino crammed in one graphic novel.

win.

That's an interesting theory but alot of Joker's men get dialouge.

I just took it as Harley just didn't speak. That was her character, she was like Miho in Sin City who doesn't talk and is very deadly. Maybe she is a mute, maybe Joker doesn't like it when she talks, who knows that is just her character. By far the best incarnation of her.

^Yeah, whenever people tried to duplicate the chatterbox Harley from TAS, it didn´t work. That character works in the animated world, not the graphic novel world.

The focus of the story wasn´t the police hunting of the criminals, it was the underworld and its inner workings and relationships. It´s not unheard of gang wars happening in the really down and dirty areas without the police showing up.

Is there even a Wikipedia article on this graphic novel yet?

What about the comics world?

depends on the comic, I think. Mad Love is great, but then again it´s drawn by Bruce Timm, has the look and feel of the animated Batman world. Not for something in the lines of Killing Joke or Man Who Laughs, IMO.

I got this graphic novel in the mail today and read it earlier in the day. I like the artwork. Good take on modernizing everything. The art basically takes major cues from how Nolan re-imaged the Bat-universe and ran with it.

I like the story too... but one thing. Has anyone who read it yet notice that one picture of the Joker sitting there on the phone with prescription pills all over the floor? I picture a lot of uptight morons getting their underpants all in a bunch over that, seeing as how what happened to Heath Ledger and all. Then again, I always look too far into things, so who knows.

Well yeah ofcourse Bruce Timm/Paul Dini Harley wouldn't work in this book, but going the exact oposite with her doesn't make a whole lot of sense either.

I actually picked it up and gave it an open minded read. Heres what i thought...

As an elseworld tale like Red Rain or Gotham by Gaslight, I dig it. It had Nolans universes fingerprints all over it, with that realism deal. I can appreciate these non continuity alternate universe story's, but there are some things that work in the context that would never work in other adoptions. Here are some beefs...

Joker isn't crazy enough for my taste. And I really hate it when people think a killer needs to get bloody to look cool. In a way, it's like when Joker is flipping out on Jonny about him being boring.

oh, didn't care for killer Crock at all, totally neutered the character. Him being a Thug Hulk just seems so lame in a way. Realistic? Yeah, I guess. But kinda unimaginative. The Man-gator looked a little too fantastic, but not really visually boring.

I picked it up this morning. Mother of God, finally, a Joker story that can rival or match up against The Killing Joke in it's greatness. Superbly written by Azzaralo and Bermejo is one of my favorite artists. Joker's facial expression, expecially when he's in the restaurant and says, "Waa I want back what's mine."

Lots of great moments, Joker's characterization was nailed to the tee. "I don't care about money!" In some instances, he reminded me of Heath's Joker. But this isn't his Joker. No Agent of Chaos here. I actually imagined Hammil's voice for this Joker (like I usually do)

Johnny Frost narrarating the story was appropriate. You can never tell a Joker story from his point of view. The point of The Joker is that he's unpredictable, you don't know what he's thinking or what he'll do next. Johnny Frost was our guide, or our voice if you will to Joker's insanity and inside the crime sindicate. Though Frost doesn't really understand Joker either.

I loved the handling of the villains. And Batman. A wide smile across my face when Batman revealed he keeps the lower half of his face exposed. There's so many great moments in here. Disturbing alot of times though.

A big applause from the writing of Azzaralo and the art from Bermejo. Best goddamn thing I've read in a long time.

I'll read it again. I'll be back to discuss with you guys later once I've digested it. It still has it's awe aspiring affect on me.

10/10

I totally didn't even think of that.
