Les Miserables: One Thread More!

More comments from Hollywood Reporter::
Tom Hooper, director, Les Miserables, best picture:
“What a wonderful year for movies when nine films with this kind of diversity get acknowledged for the industry's highest honor. I am so proud that Les Miserables joins them and that the Academy noted the magnificent work from Hugh, Annie, our legendary song writers and the superlative crafts experts whose work made our film what it was.”

Claude-Michel Schonberg, Herbert Kretzmer, and Alain Boublil, "Suddenly," Les Miserables, best song:
"30 years in the making and 3 days in the writing -- this is how 'Suddenly' came to life 30 years after the original show was created. We wrote this song for the film on a suggestion from Tom Hooper, after he asked us to revisit a specific chapter of Victor Hugo's novel. In this chapter Jean Valjean discovers an overwhelming feeling of love for the little girl Cosette, whom he rescues as promised to her mother - and this happened to him ... 'Suddenly.'"

Paco Delgado, costume designer, Les Miserables, best costumes:
"I am very proud to be a part of this special film, and am especially happy for all of the recognition it has received. I was supported by a great wardrobe team who worked with such passion. It is amazing to get a nomination for a film we all worked so hard on. Thank you very much."

Simon Hayes, production sound mixer, Les Miserables, achievement in sound mixing:
"I am extremely grateful to the Academy for considering our work on Les Miserables worthy of a nomination for this award. I would like to thank our tremendous cast for trusting me with their fantastic live vocal performances. I would also like to thank Tom Hooper for his encouragement and support and the whole Les Miserables film crew for their collaboration, professionalism and skill."

Eve Stewart, production designer, Les Miserables, achievement in production design:
"I think it’s just brilliant to receive this nomination from the Academy, alongside the other production designers, whom I respect so much. Working with Tom Hooper is always amazing. Our art department crews on the film were true craftsmen and artisans. Therefore, I must accept this nomination as much on their behalf as for myself. Working on Les Miserables with our incredible team was a joy I won’t soon forget. I wish my fellow nominees luck!"

Lisa Westcott, hair and makeup designer, Les Miserables, achievement in makeup and hairstyling:
"First of all I would like to express my gratitude to the Academy for considering our work on Les Miserables to be worthy of nomination for this award. Secondly I would like to pay tribute to everyone in the Hair & Makeup team for all their skill and hard work, without whom it would not have been possible to feel so proud of being involved in such a wonderfully rewarding project."

Only that SLP actually deserves it all.
Yours is the first comment I've read that actually said that. I haven't seen the movie but most of the stuff I've read about it was "eh".

Are you confusing it with Les Miz? :p

SLP has been a frontrunner for months now, it's gotten nothing but praise from critics, and I don't know anyone who's seen it who said it was "eh". It only lost its hype after Zero Dark Thirty came out. But after today's nominations, its definitely back in the game.

There've been about 5 frontrunners in the last 6 months...none of them have held it for very long. First it was Lincoln, then it was Les Mis, then it was Zero Dark Thirty. Argo and Life of Pi flirted with it briefly earlier this fall...

I wouldn't say it was up for grabs, but at this point the momentum seems to be between Lincoln and SLP.

It wasn't exactly "eh", in many ways it is quite, quite wonderful movie, about as good as a comedy can be. But of course it shouldn't share the same glory with Les Miz! Especially that Weaver-lady, what did she do in that movie? How can anyone rate her over Samantha Barks, really?

I don't really think Les Miz was ever a front runner. It garnered a lot of hype from the early screenings, but that Hype died a fast death once the reviews came in/the movie was released.

Agreed, JP.

Hooper didn't get nominated for Best Director, and I'm glad for that.

I still believe :O

Same here. I've heard lots of hype over it and good word of mouth. The only problem is that The Weinsteins screwed up and rolled it out too slow. Not to mention I don't think it got a wide release.

Exactly. I don't think it's even been in the box office top 10 for awhile. From a release standpoint, it feels like it never got off the ground with audiences.

I've heard nothing but good things on it, so it's on my long list of movies to check out before Oscar night.

I believe they are going wide next week. Not surprising considering its Oscar prospects.

Don't even get me started on the handling of SLP. I think the movie could have made 60mil by now if the roll out wasn't so ridiculously slow.

Anne won best supporting actress at Critics Choice Awards. :applaud:hrt:

Well done and much deserved! Now, onto the Oscars...

She looked amazing in her dress.

And really, even if it isn't going to win the top prize ... Fantine is my favorite character and if her portrayal wins the oscar, what else can I wish for? When this movie was announced, oscars were'nt in my mind at all, it all came as a surprise to me, actually.

BFCA is turning into such a joke. They can't even spell "ANNE" correctly.

That was disappointing and sloppy. They have no excuse whatsoever.

SLP is really cleaning up. I'd love to see LM win big at the Globes but right now it looks like SLP is going to take all the Comedy/ Musical prizes, thanks mostly to the Weinstein machine.

Lincoln's looking a lot more vulnerable at the Oscars, too. It could be 'Saving Private Ryan vs. Shakespeare in Love' all over again!

That picture!

:funny:

That interview was hilarious. I have the same reaction when people can't believe she's only in it for the first half hour (and at the end, as a ghost).

Although on stage, the actress playing Fantine also plays one of the barricade boys later on. So she gets two death scenes in one show. :wow:

That's why early on, I was insisting that Sean Bean play Fantine. But all of your scoffed at me. Well who's laughing now!

So, apparently the DVD/blu-ray is scheduled for March 19.

I have nothing to back that up other than a post on a blu-ray forum, but...that's a possible release date.

Just saw this movie. And here i thought i was done crying after watching The Impossible

. Loved it. Thought everyone gave incredible performances, and i wouldnt be upset at all if Hugh won the Academy Award for this, he deserves it! A very solid 9/10 from me.
