Les Miserables: One Thread More!

I saw my first Broadway show in 1980...so I've seen a lot. Les Mis I've seen 8 times on Broadway, and once in London.

Here's the first Broadway show I ever saw. It was Peter Pan, with Sandy Duncan. I was in kindergarten when I saw it:

I've saved every playbill, ticket from shows that I've seen so it's been 31 different shows. I thought that was a lot. You must have been like my fiance who's somewhere over 70.

Having now seen it live and been part of the stage show...I'm not sure a filmed version would really be that much better than what we've seen from the 10th anniversary and 25th anniversary shows. Les Mis is really about the music. A lot of the best moments are just people standing in lines singing as a chorus.

On a lighter note, I'm playing Javert in November. We were instructed not to look to the movie for any creative influence.

That would be cool but I'm not counting on it. Filming entire stage shows of big budget musicals is pretty unusual. Sondheim does it and so does Lloyd Webber once in a while but for the most part it doesn't happen. I think the 25th anniversary show is the closest we'll ever get, and bootlegs on YouTube.
Technically all shows are filmed for library archives.

New York public library.

Has anybody heard about a possible release of the film with the added bits that were cut out. The director hinted at something like this coming out in the future when the film was first released.

Also, I would like to see an added disk with extras.

Came across this on twitter today. A rare promo shot of Hugh Jackman as JVJ in Les Mis. Made me lol. With a different haircut, he could be Logan! :funny:

I took this tonight on my way home from work. This is the new marquee for the upcoming Broadway revival, which is on a fancy new LCD screen.

However, they haven't finished taking down the marquee for Billy Crystal's show, that closed last weekend, which created this unfortunate combination:

LOL!!! Yeah, not so much...

I sure wish I could find out what the deal is with this new Blu-Ray of the movie that's coming out on the 28th:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GSNXON8?ie=UTF8&force-full-site=1&ref_=aw_bottom_links

It looks like just a regular version of the movie and no different than the Blu-ray that's currently out there, but it doesn't have both the Digital and Ultraviolet copy, just one Digital Ultraviolet copy, and it's twice as expensive as the regular Blu-Ray ($22 vs. $11). And the run time is listed as 316 minutes, which can't be right because that's over five hours! The regular Blu-Ray also has a runtime of 316 minutes, for some reason. The actual movie is only 156 minutes long.

Here's the 2012 Blu-Ray for comparison:

I write to Universal asking what this release is all about but haven't heard back. I don't see the point of going to all the trouble of releasing another Blu-Ray version when there's already one out there. If it's some sort of extended edition, it doesn't say so anywhere. I suppose it could just be a replacement for the older Blu-Ray, but who'd buy this when it's twice as much?

It'll be the same release in a new package like the others coming out at the same date with similar packaging (King Kong, An American Werewolf in London, ET, Apollo 13, Ted, Born on the Fourth of July, Babe, Spartacus, Bridesmaids, Snow White and the Huntsman and Wanted).

i was secretly hoping it was a directors cut

Danoyse - is it listed anywhere who is starring in the revival?

i would love to do one of those greyhound trips and go see it. i wonder if they still do those

edit:
it would be nice to see Karimloo in person, i've heard he's amazing

i've heard of Levy before, and I believe Forbach was in the show I saw here on tour

I knew Nikki James when she was a Renthead. :oldrazz:

You should definitely take a trip in and see some shows. When my friend from Boston comes here, we usually see a matinee and and evening show together. It's fun!

Why is it almost twice as much as the old version, though, if there's nothing really new about it? That's what baffles me. Nobody's going to buy this when you can get the older version for half the price.

because it's a new release. The suggested/retail for the old one isn't 11$, that's just retailers putting it on "sale" so people are opted to buy it.

As you can see, the list price is still around 20$ http://www.amazon.com/Les-Mis%C3%A9rables-Hugh-Jackman/dp/B005S9EK5Y/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1389454475&sr=8-3&keywords=les+miserables

Many of these Blu Rays include the entire run time on the back cover, including the feature and ALL the extra features, that is why the runtime can seem abnormally long.

slipcover junkies will

I suppose!

I was hoping this might be an extended edition too, but I'm starting to wonder if Hooper's going to do one now. I would have thought he would but he hasn't said anything about it lately, and I thought if he'd release one it would have been in time for Christmas sales, when the movie was still a fairly new release. Guess we'll just see...

I wrote to Universal asking about the 316 minute run time of the new Blu-Ray and got this response:

Dear Ms. Bartholomew,

Thank you for contacting us.

The "Les Miserables" release includes Blu-ray and DVD copies of the theatrical version of the film, each 158 minutes long for a total of 316 minutes. No other version has been released.

We appreciate your interest and hope that you will continue to enjoy Universal releases.

Sincerely,

Consumer Relations
I admit I didn't think that they included both movies when calculating run time, but that strikes me as kind of weird. It's two different versions of the same movie with the same run time, why calculate run time in one total as if the two versions are stitched together somehow??

Bumping this long dormant thread to say that there's a rerelease of this movie planned for February 23, 2024. It'll be in theaters for one week and is a remixed and remastered version.

Bumping again because the rerelease is this weekend, in case anybody is interested.
