Atlus has released a new trailer for Lost Dimension, introducing S.E.A.L.E.D. members Sojiro, Zenji, and Himeno.
Here are some quick outlines, via Atlus:

  • Sojiro‘s knowledge of medicine allows him to heal and revive fallen teammates, as well as inflict deadly status effects upon his foes.
  • As a mimic, Zenji‘s special powers allow him to copy the abilities of nearby teammates; he has the potential to double the trouble when you put him in your team, or if worse comes to worst, he’s carrying a shotgun too.
  • Last but not least is the hot-headed Himeno, who can control fire and ice to obliterate anyone standing in your way.
If you missed it, a trailer introducing S.E.A.L.E.D. members Sho, Yoko, and Toya was released earlier this week.
Lost Dimension is due out for PlayStation 3 and PS Vita in North America on July 28 and in Europe this summer.

Lost Dimension trailer introduces Agito, Marco, and Nagi

Plus, a new free downloadable costume for Sho.

Lost-Dimension_05-20-15_001.jpg

Atlus has released its third character trailer for Lost Dimension, this time introducing S.E.A.L.E.D. team members Agito, Marco, and Nagi.
Here’s the rundown of each, via Atlus:

  • Agito can teleport himself to gain an advantage in battle, and set up some surprise tactics by teleporting allies and enemies as well.
  • Marco on the other hand relies on sheer power; his telekinetic abilities can devastate even the most formidable foes, or protect him from taking damage.
  • Lastly is the versatile Nagi, who flies around the battlefield thanks to her mastery over levitation. Her ability to levitate isn’t a one-trick pony either– she can use her body as a weapon and fly into enemies at incredible speeds to annihilate them.
The publisher also confirmed a new downloadable costume for main character Sho, which will be permanently free when it launches.

Lost Dimension European release date set
Published 2 hours ago. 7 comments.
European release one month after North America.

Lost-Dimension-Dated-EU.jpg

Lost Dimension
will launch for PlayStation 3 and PS Vita as physical and digital releases in Europe on August 28, NIS America announced.
The game was previously dated for release in North America on July 28.
Get the full rundown below.
About
To subdue the threat The End poses to the entire planet, several countries create a special forces group called S.E.A.L.E.D., which is comprised of eleven psychics with superhuman abilities. Each soldier has their own talents and skillsets to use in combat, which can be expanded after gaining enough experience in the field. Bonds of friendship will form amongst the members of S.E.A.L.E.D., but be mindful of which allies to keep close, as The End mandates the player must begin eliminating teammates. Make sure to accuse the right teammate of being a traitor though – once the final battle with The End begins any remaining traitors will fight the main character alongside him.
Key Features

  • A Cataclysmic Whodunnit! – Not only will players have to keep their eyes focused on strategically defeating the enemies laying in wait on the field of combat, but they need to carefully watch party members’ tendencies in order to expose the traitor. At the end of every floor, players will be forced to vote and eliminate one of their trusted allies, and the
consequences for choosing incorrectly could be dire…
  • Spoiler-Free Zone – In addition to a variety of game mechanics to help assess teammate loyalty, Lost Dimension’s traitor system is randomly determined, assuring that no two players will be faced with the same playthrough. Sorry, kiddies, but it’s impossible to look up the answers this time around.
  • Psychic Warlords – Each character in the party is a master of a different sphere of powers. There’s the girl who controls molecular behavior to burn or freeze anything/anyone in her path. There’s the guy who can teleport all around (also with the bonus superpower of being satisfyingly cocky). And there’s even someone with an identity crisis because all he knows how
to do is steal everyone else’s powers!
  • Keep Your Friends Close… – In between battles, players will have the option to chat with teammates and develop closer bonds with them. Juggling these friendships and keeping track of who participates in battle will be the key to sussing out the traitors and assuring that, by the time you reach The End, it won’t be… the end… for you and your allies!

Lost Dimension trailer introduces Mana and George

The "powerhouses" of the S.E.A.L.E.D. team.

Lost-Dimension_05-22-15.jpg

Continuing its series of character trailers, Atlus has released a new Lost Dimension video introducing S.E.A.L.E.D. team members Mana and George.
Here’s their outlines, via Atlus:

  • Lover of all things cute, Mana Kawai isn’t afraid to run in and pummel away at her foes with her bare hands. When her targets get wise to their impending beating and stay out of melee range, she can just hurl debris or create earthquakes to hit them instead.
  • Just as brave is George Jackman, who fights for the glory of freedom and justice! George cuts his enemies down with a deadly katana and can also amplify his damage through psychometry.
The pair are described as the “powerhouses” of S.E.A.L.E.D. and can be either relable allies, or deadly foes. Just like the rest of the team, Mana and George could be one of the five traitors that betray you in your mission to stop The End from ending the world.

Som Pourfarzaneh : Lost Dimension’s Vision and Judgement Systems

Posted Jul 17, 2015

Lost Dimension is one of those rare games that encourages you to get to know your NPC compatriots, while at the same time pressuring you to think carefully about whom you decide to buddy up with. Atlus’ upcoming scifi RPG puts party management at the forefront of its gameplay, and ties all of its systems back to the decisions you make about your compatriots.
Read more of Som Pourfarzaneh's Lost Dimension's Vision & Judgement Systems.
If you’re new to Lost Dimension, check out my initial preview here, which explains more about its story, combat, and Gifts system (note that while I mentioned that Deferring replenishes Sanity, it’s actually Waiting that does so). The game has a way of drawing you into its narrative and gameplay fairly seamlessly, building upon traditional JRPG tropes while bringing its own innovations to the table.

[YT]sat6lSkSnPw[/YT]
Lost Dimension’s Judgement and Vision systems are two of the more interesting RPG features I’ve seen in a while, and they tie into the game’s overarching story nicely. The game’s main antagonist, The End, has created a gigantic structure called The Pillar, which your party has to traverse to save the world. Each member of your group, which is referred to collectively as SEALED, has her/his own unique skillset and character progression tree, with specific roles in combat.
Som-1.png

These NPCs all have iconic personalities that you’ll want to get to know through talking to them from the game’s main hub inside The Pillar, and you’ll be given the opportunity to advance your relationships with them through dialogue and combat. If that sounds similar to a lot of RPGs out there, it should - but there’s a catch. At each level of The Pillar (I like to think of them as Acts of the story), there will be a traitor in SEALED, requiring you to use Vision and Judgement to weed them out.
Lost Dimension’s main character, Sho Kasugai, is gifted with a precognitive ability called Vision, which gives him a glimpse of the future and insight into the thoughts of his party members. In gameplay terms, this means that he’s periodically able to pick out traitorous intent from the jumble of thoughts that he “hears” from his compatriots, and use them to help determine how to proceed with Judgement. The game’s Vision system allows you to look at your party’s Trust levels, Battle Rankings, and Vision History (which essentially logs the traitorous thoughts you’ve seen in cutscenes), along with a Judgment-related readout called the Vote Forecast.

[YT]sat6lSkSnPw[/YT]
Before proceeding to the next level of The Pillar, the members of SEALED will be required to determine who is the traitor for the current level, which is a bit like voting people off of the island (Survivor joke: tick). You’ll enter a sealed (party name joke: tick) room and vote, along with your NPC team members, for whom you think is the traitor, requiring your deductive reasoning and the trust levels of your party to move the decision in the right direction. Based on these factors, you might guess correctly, or you might not.
The Judgement process is what makes Lost Dimension’s Vision system so important. The Battle Rankings, for example, determine how many votes each characters get, in that the three characters (including Sho) who have the highest Battle Results get two votes, while the rest get one. This feature will influence whom you take into battle and how you utilize their skills, as you can only have six people in a combat mission at a time (out of an initial total of eleven). Additionally, the Vote Forecast will give you an idea of who SEALED is going to vote for in the next Judgement.
Som-2.png

Lost Dimension’s Vision and Judgement systems lend an already interesting game a new layer of complexity that seems to have been well-conceived within the larger narrative and gameplay framework. I’m looking forward to diving deeper and seeing how they play out in the rest of the story.
Lost Dimension releases on PS3 and PS Vita on July 28.

Lost Dimension’s Traitors Will Break Your Heart. July 27, 2015 . 5:00pm

Somebody’s a traitor, and it’s up to you to pick him out. Lost Dimensions isn’t going to make it easy for you, though
You’re going to have your heart broken in Lost Dimension. I’m sorry, but it’s unavoidable. Given that the traitors are randomized, it’s a good chance one of your favorites is going to turn on you. I know, because I had the misfortune of two of the people I really liked, one of whom was my favorite character in the game, turning on me.

Finding out who’s against you takes a bit of time. Each floor has one traitor, but there could be multiple people who aren’t exactly trustworthy. Good thing our hero, Sho, can read thoughts. You can take five allies into a battle with you and afterward you’ll get a vision of their thoughts. Phrases will appear on the screen, along with busts of each characters. Dissenting thoughts appear in red, and you’ll know how many unsettling voices appeared that round at the end.

Unfortunately, it isn’t as easy as seeing some red words flash on the screen while someone’s head floats by. No, that would make it too easy. As I’ve said, multiple people could be plotting against you and Lost Dimension doesn’t come right out and say, "That dude is as bad as his hair!" After a battle, you can go through the hub to look at your visions. Here, you can see how many potential traitors were in your group. The goal is to grind through enough battles with different groups of individuals to determine who is and isn’t suspicious. You can then mark them as suspects in the Vision center.

Let’s say you’ve narrowed it down to three individuals who seem to be the traitor. The next step is to go through a battle with one of them at a time. Here’s where Lost Dimension will help you out. The game will say something like, "There may be a traitor in this group." You can then go to the Vision center in the hub and expend one of the three Vision Points from the chapter to see if he or she is it.

Spending the Vision Point begins a mini-game. Sho will run around inside the suspect’s head, following voices to reach him or her. Get there a few times, and you’ll see if he or she is definitely, 100% the traitor. I’d recommend only going through this if you’re sure, since you only get 3 VPs every chapter and unused ones will carry over.

You’d think that would be the end of it, but no. No it isn’t. Even though Sho, and by extension you, know who the bad guy is, the rest of the team doesn’t. Everyone has their own opinions and will vote according to their gut. You then have to spend additional time grinding to make sure the person who is guilty is voted out when the time comes.

The easy way to achieve this goal is to not bring the traitor into any battles. Because the culprit isn’t working with anyone, no one will trust him or her. The other is to gossip with people after a battle is complete. Sometimes, a character will come up and either share who they believe to be the traitor or ask you your thoughts. Keep pointing them at the right person and, when the voting comes around, you’ll kick the right person out of Lost Dimension.

Cherish Every Moment With Nagi In Lost Dimension. July 29, 2015 . 1:30pm

You’re going to miss out on one of the best Lost Dimension allies if you don’t add Nagi to your team.

Lost Dimension has quite a large cast of characters, all of whom are waiting for you to spend some time battling and bonding with them in the Pillar. There’s one in particular I think you should know, though. Her name is Nagi and truly, she’s the best girl. Or woman, if you’d prefer. (Sorry – I’ve been watching Nisekoi.) My greatest regret is that not once, but twice did she decide to turn traitor in my playthroughs.

Fortunately, that might not be the case for you! After all, Lost Dimension’s traitors are randomly determined at the start of each adventure. Even though my favorite kept stabbing me in the back, Nagi could be one of your most trustworthy assets.

Which would be great, because Nagi is awesome. To start, she works wonderfully as a scout. She and Agito each have abilities that allow them to quickly traverse the battlefield, disregarding elevation. When faced with a map that has multiple levels, adding Nagi to the team lets you quickly take higher ground without having to search for ladders. Levitation for the win.

Plus, it means her character model is constantly floating, which is pretty cool. Bonus points to FuRyu for not giving her some sort of billowy dress as a uniform. Though honestly, it’s difficult to tell what he’s wearing. It seems to be a bodysuit with shorts, with a sarong around it? It doesn’t matter. The point is, Lost Dimension isn’t using her as some sort of fanservice character, and that’s appreciated.
It wouldn’t fit anyway, because Nagi is a hard hitter. While I did suggest her as a scouting role, you don’t want her to be locked into that. Sure, she’s one of those folks you can send in ahead of the pack and know she’ll be fine. But, Nagi is also great for working in a group to take out hordes of enemies.

She and Toya are the only two characters in Lost Dimension whose primary weapons offer an area attack. Give her an app that boosts her strength and the best gun she can have at the time, and you will never, ever regret it. Making sure she packs a punch, combined with her agility, gives you something of a super soldier that will deal damage, but hopefully never have to take it.

Her Gifts help with that too. All of her offensive skills involve dealing massive damage to people, often hitting multiple foes at a time. Thousand Knives, Dragon Dive, and Particle Crush will be a huge help when you need lots of bad guys gone. Giving her the Sense materia so she can learn Silent Slash helps too. It only hits one target, but that chance of instantly killing an opponent is great. It’s hard to corner someone if she’s wiping out more than one enemy at a time or immediately incapacitating anyone she attacks.

My greatest wish for you all, however, is that you get to see the Lost Dimension Nagi I didn’t. In my game, she was always gone too soon, before I could unlock her true potential. Three of her Gifts only unlock if you are able to invest 1GP in every green, purple and red skills. While one, Gravitron, is a triggered Gift that increases agility, dexterity, and movement for three turns, the other two are passive skills that apply to the entire battle so long as Nagi is part of the current team. G-Force ties damage to movement, increasing output depending on how far they do or don’t move if you add points to purple skills. Zero Gravity is tied to red skills and boosts the movement range of everyone in your party. They won’t be flying, but they’ll go farther than ever before.

Nagi is an incredible asset to any Lost Dimension line-up. She’s a great character, and perhaps one of the strongest allies you can have on your side. That she may abandon your team because of a silly thing like "gameplay mechanics" is a tragedy, but maybe next time she’ll stay?

Lost Dimension : Chasing Shadows

Posted Jul 31, 2015

Some games rely on their stories and character development to grab your attention, using plot devices and memorable personalities to keep you coming back for more. Others depend upon their gameplay systems to keep you engaged, either through their unique implementation or by sheer force of addictiveness.
Read more of Som Pourfarzaneh's Lost Dimension: Chasing Shadows.
Lost Dimension is of the latter variety. Lancarse and Atlus Games’ new single-player RPG doesn’t do anything special in the narrative department, but has some interesting takes on combat and party interaction that make it worth playing.
If you’re new to Lost Dimension, check out my initial preview of it here. The game is a traditional RPG in many respects, offering a fairly well-realized science fiction setting with turn-based combat and character progression, gear management, and light crafting. It also gives a fresh perspective on NPC interaction, requiring you to get to know your party members and promote their collaboration while being wary of their potentially nefarious intentions.
LD1.jpg

Lost Dimension’s story is fairly straightforward, and cliché to an extent which borders on the self-aware. An evil megalomaniac named The End has promised to destroy the world, creating a gigantic tower called the Pillar that your team, SEALED, has to traverse to try to overthrow him. Each of your party members has a unique personality and skill set that you’ll have to use to your advantage in and out of combat, and Lost Dimension doles out its story bits through in-game conversations and anime-style cutscenes.
Combat is familiar in its turn-based simplicity, but the way that Lost Dimension treats movement and special abilities keeps it fresh. Rather than relying on a grid for traversal, your characters have arcs within which they can move, and an arsenal of psychic skills at their disposal. The game has a deep character progression tree system, and you’ll be using your party members’ telekinetic, element-based, ranged, and melee-oriented abilities frequently against tactically-minded AI.
LD2.jpg

To be fair, while your team members’ personalities are diverse and you’ll likely find yourself becoming attached to one or more of them, the game doesn’t do anything all that interesting in terms of character development. The story continues in its end-of-world scenario, and you’re encouraged to do team assist attacks in combat and chat with your party members after battle to improve your relationship levels, but all of it seems developed singularly to serve Lost Dimension’s true contributions to the genre: its Vision and Justice systems.
LD3.jpg

For a primer on Lost Dimension’s unique systems, you can check out my overview here, but suffice it to say that the game’s story and gameplay operate on the premise that at each level of the Pillar, one of the members of SEALED will attempt to betray you (and traitors are selected at random, so GameFaqs won’t help you much here). It’s an interesting take on traditional party relationship systems, requiring you to utilize your main character’s psychic skills and your own deductive reasoning to determine who the traitors are, and then ensure you have the appropriate sway with the rest of the team to guarantee that they’ll vote with you to expel the same person.
LD4.jpg

It’s actually a fascinating metasystem, which, in coordination with the engaging combat, makes Lost Dimension well-worth playing. The game’s story and other systems are very much in service of this core dynamic of forging relationships and weeding out traitors, which is a bit disappointing, as there is the potential for an interesting narrative and world here. Still, it’s a fun single-player RPG experience, and a fair investment for PS3/Vita owners.
LD5.jpg

GAMEPLAY - 8 Lost Dimension’s engaging combat and interesting Vision and Justice systems will keep you coming back for more. There are plenty of skill trees for your party’s character progression and a lot of dialogue, but most of it feels in service to the Vision and Justice systems, which can feel artificial.
VISUALS & SOUND - 8 Lost Dimension looks like a pretty game from a previous generation. It has some nice environments, excellent character art, and more than serviceable character models and animations. The music is memorable and there’s a lot of voice acting, but some of it can sound contrived because of stilted translations from the original Japanese.
POLISH - 7 I encountered a few camera issues in combat, and English translations from the Japanese version can be a little awkward. There are also some strangely placed load times in between character abilities, which can be jarring.
LONGEVITY - 9 Average playthroughs are clocked in at about 30 hours, with the opportunity for new game plus, and free DLC if you purchase the game within two weeks of launch.
VALUE - 9 At $39.99, Lost Dimension’s box price is hard to beat. It would be nice if the game were available for PS3/Vita cross-buy, but the value is still excellent.
Final Score 8.2

Pros
Great combat
Randomzied traitors
Unique vision & justice systems

Cons
Character development mostly serves vision & justice
Some awkward load times & dialog translations
Unimaginative story
