does anyone use a desktop anymore? am i the last of a dying breed?

my computer will be obsolete soon, i've mentioned this elsewhere before. i want at leat 1.5 TB hard drive, and at least 16gb of ram.

i've recently learned that laptops can carry these specs now. (i just never bothered to look into it). so i'm wondering if that's the better course for me now. ugh.

i don't need a monitor, i've a great one. so if i go PC, i just need the tower. but, if i go laptop, the screen size isn't what i want, but i could connect it to monitor right? and there is the portability factor i kinda like.

but, i use Photoshop, inDesign, some 3D softwares and other art programs that use a lot of memory, and family tree maker, softwares like that. and i want to learn video editing softwares too. i haven't had a laptop in like 10 years, maybe 15? i assume they can withstand being powered on for a decent amount of time? as when i finally sit to use the pc, i usually set aside a few hours. i don't want the battery to burn out.

and i'm scared to lose everything. that could happen if a laptop is dropped right? and yes i'm aware of external hard drives. i have a fantom one that i haven't plugged in since 2018? haha and i had a western digital around 2010 that started clicking. i still have it in the hopes that stuff on there is salvageable.

please be kind to me, i am tech blonde haha.
also, i'm gonna post this in Tech Support.

I use a laptop and so does my wife. She's a therapist and has a keyboard, mouse, monitor, camera, and lighting (LOL) in her office so when she sees clients online, she just plugs in a hub that has USB, HDMI, etc. etc. to her computer. It's pretty simple. You can actually use your laptop screen as another monitor if you want to give yourself more real estate.

As far as backups go, you can backup physically or do cloud backups. Dropping your laptop shouldn't be an issue if you get a good carrying case. Desktops that are on the floor present a hazard from dog pee. They are perfectly sized dog urinals.

I used to do video editing professionally and still do it for fun on occasion and I haven't touched a desktop computer since grad school. :funny:

You'd be amazed at how powerful they are now, CC. My current laptop is a Macbook with 2TB of storage and 24GB of memory. As for being scared to lose everything, A.) protective shells are pretty inexpensive, not to mention carrying cases, B.) regular cloud backups, C.) back-up to hard drive. You can use your monitor with it for extra, too. I have yet to find a good reason to ever look back into getting a desktop, honestly.

Personally I'm still mostly desktop. I have an older laptop that works fine but it's at least 5-6 years old and nowhere near as powerful as my computer. Desktops have a lot more room for power, and for cheaper, than laptops.

Depending on how much you want to spend, most laptops come with somewhere between 8-16gb of ram but the highend ones can max out around 192gb.

As to backups: Always, always, always have a backup. Whether it's a physical drive or a cloud back up, never rely on a single hard drive to store everything. I have physical back ups of everything important and that's going back decades. SSD main drivess are the norm these days and highly resistent to damage from being dropped but spinning disks are still common and cheaper. You can get an external drive with more than 20tb if you want for around $350 but more reasonable drives are around $100.

I mean, if you're going to be playing video games on a computer, having a desktop is definitely superior. But beyond that, laptops are definitely the way to go.

When I think of a hard drive, I always think of those clunky things of yesteryear. You can pick up a 2TB USB drive (it's technically a hard drive too) for anywhere from 5-20 (EDIT: That's wrong...they are more) bucks. They are super convenient and you can walk around with it on your key ring. I'd encrypt it though in case something happens to it......I lost my keys last week. LOL They are either somewhere in the house or someone accidentally threw them out with the bags after I went shopping. I now have a Find Me doohickey on my key ring and put them on my dog's collars too.

EDIT: Some people like to mirror their drives, but I'm mainly worried about my data. If you aren't familar with file sizes, you would be AMAZED at how much data fits in so little space.

Sup guys.

It's been years since I've been in this hive of scum and villainy. So whatever happened to the old profiles? I tried logging in with my old account but couldn't :(
