I think a well made New Gods movie can be something truly fantastic and continue the fantasy extravaganza feel given by the world building of Aquaman, or what I personally would have liked out of the first Thor movie if they completely eliminated the Earth parts and just focused on this alien worlds and its inhabitants. I believe it can be something truly special.

Also, reading the original Kirby run, I feel that despite how outdated the dialogues can be (if we can agree that comic book dialogues didn't get really "sophisticated" and subtle until the last 20-30 years), you can see how progressive and ahead of its time it was for the time period (60s).

I love Kirby, but subtlety was never the Kings speciality.

I agree about Highfather, recently he's been shown as quite militaristic, but he's the ultimate peace-nic hippy.

Highfather was once the great warrior Izaya, but he saw the folly of war and traded his weapons for a shepherds staff.

Yeah, but to be fair I don't think subtlety was anyone's thing when writing comics before 1986.

To be fair, I'm more familiar with Highfather's personality from the recent Darkseid Wars, Godhead and other more recent stories, but not so much from the original run; I'm still in the early numbers focused of Orion on Earth and his band of "misfits".

The prosecution (@Spider-Aziz ) can - try and - make his case...


His art is really something; his obvious anime influence brought a sense of dynamic energy and freshness to the medium and these characters that I personally haven't seen in a long time. In a way it reminds me of 70s Neil Addams work, where characters didn't look only strong, but also limber and agile.


Haven't seen it yet; I don't think the subject matter is something that would particularly interest me, but I'm very curious about Ava's direction and visuals, since I think that's the most relevant factor in her transition towards New Gods (since script is a completely different matter).


That image goes back to Jack Kirby's original run on New Gods (which I'm currently almost half way through); which probably means that she's taking heavy inspiration from Kirby's run, although it could also mean just showing respect to the character's creator or more than likely, just showing that the project's still alive and kicking.

Funny thing, New Gods is one of those properties that have always been one of my "favorites" even before reading any of their actual stories (knowing them by association through JLU); I guess I always found the concept itself to be incredibly fascinating, more so than many other properties.

They are some of the main goodies from the New Gods.
Left to right: Orion, Highfather, Mr Miracle, Big Barda and Lightray is above them.
I think the picture is just saying who the main characters will be.

A little New Gods background:
Basically imagine heaven and hell are planets populated by super-advanced beings, and they are competing for the fate of the universe, with Earth as a battle ground.
Apokolips is ruled by Darkseid, a world or hatred fear and oppression, the entire planet has been turned into a war factory, sci-fi North Korea.
New Genesis is ruled by Highfather (the guy with the staff), they are kind of hippies, preaching peace and love, they live on a floating city leaving the planet below to nature.
To end a war that was destroying the universe the rulers exchanged sons, Highfather was given Orion and Darskied was given Mr Miracle (also known as Scott Free). But the truce is uneasy.
Darkseid seeks the Anti-Life Equation, will will give him complete control over all life. It is hidden in the minds of certain humans, so he is working secretly on Earth to find it.

I can't recommend Jack Kirby's Fourth World highly enough, some of the best fiction I've ever seen.

You're very welcome.
In the original Kirby stuff Superman gets involved, but only really in putting down some of Darkseids mischief on Earth. Was mostly a self contained thing, could easily be it's own cinematic universe like X-Men.
Originally it was done in four different comics all running at once, all written and drawn by Kirby (he man was a machine).
Supermans Pal Jimmy Olsen (This is where Darkseid first appeared), New Gods, Mr Miracle and The Forever People.
Together they gave a bigger overview of the whole story.

I don't normally go about the personal recommendation thing this way, but I'm making a once-in-a-lifetime exception to share something near and dear to my heart. It's called Deadly Class. The Syfi channel was cool enough to drop the first episode a month in advance before the show officially premieres in January. As some of you may already know, it's based on Image Comics' cult classic of the same name from Rick Remender and Wes Craig. Although produced by the Russo brothers, everything from the music (I'm talkin' The Cult, Depeche Mode, Bowie, Public Enemy, Psychedelic Furs) to the writing is credited to Remender; the aforementioned Craig was heavily involved w/ the show's visual aesthetics. So, it's about as faithful as an adaptation to the source material (which you should also read when time allows) as you can get. Anyway, hope you like it. I think you will.

The pilot contains a few swear words, so I don't think I can link to it directly. But you can find it by doing a search for Deadly Class pilot on YouTube. Enjoy.

Note: Apparently, the episode is blocked to those outside of the US. Likewise, some of you won't be able to see it unless you go through a proxy site or something to that effect.
