I know I'm sounding like a broken record, but I am very disappointed by Shazam. The effects look good, I expect the action will be well done, but the "adult who acts like a kid" thing really annoys me.
The first letter represents the wisdom of Solomon, having good judgement is one of his superpowers.
It's something quite unique, to have a hero who's mental powers are heightened, but instead they've gone the opposite way, having him display poor judgement to get a few laughs.
They've stripped Captain Marvel of his dignity, his personality and even his name.
The New 52 Reboot did a lot of damage to the Worlds Mightiest Mortal.
Having wisdom of Solomon in-itself, cannot make one have a good judgement unless he knows how and when to use it, for that he will need some experience.

For example, I have seen some Doctors who have medical degree but are not good at diagnosis, they possess the knowledge but are not very good at applying that knowledge in real world, but they get better at it with experience.

Similarly Billy Batson lacks the experience as he is still a kid who's growing up, he will become wiser as he gets more experience, then will will be able to effectively use Wisdom of Solomon.

The only thing that bothers me about Shazam so far is the cinematography. It has that flat gray filter that MCU movies have, which may be intentional due to the tone of the movie.

I thought that photography was good, the "grayness" could be due to lack of Sunlight as the movie was shot during winter in Toronto.

Director of Photography is Maxime Alexandre who worked on The Nun & Annabelle: Creation.

This doesn't hold up in my view. When Solomon was given wisdom by God there was no mention of there being a development period, so why would there be for Billy?
He gets all his other powers instantly, he doesn't need to do a lot of exercise to build up the strength of Hercules.

The advantage of the Wisdom of Solomon is that it doesn't require experience, that's why it's a superpower, he is instantly given understanding and judgement that it would otherwise take a lifetime to achieve.
It's not something he turns off and on when he wants it, it's part of who he is once he transforms, it's why he acts differently as Captain Marvel.

I'm not saying Billy can turn it "on" or "off" but, Solomon's wisdom is like a tool, you have to gain some experience to use it.

To give another example - suppose one person has a very good singing voice (god gift), but unless he (/she) practices and sings regularly, he cannot be good at it, some experience is needed to use those gifts.

I don't think that it's a tool, it's part of who he his, it's simply how his mind works. Just like he doesn't need practice to be bullet proof, he simply is.

You are treating it as a physical attribute whereas I'm thinking of it as a part of some ability, like flying ability which one gets better at with practice. Anyway, let's agree to disagree.

I'm fine if Shazam acts dumb and goofy, it's part of Billy's personality.

Fair enough. I'm aware I'm in a tiny minority when it comes to this.

Interesting what if scenario, where we compare Billy's transformation into Captain Marvel and how a different kid (with a different personality) if selected by the wizard, also leads to same type of Captain Marvel as his powers and abilities are already fixed, as same set of powers are given to both.

To avoid that and to give Captain Marvel some of the personality traits of Billy Batson, we have modern interpretation of Captain Marvel, in Goeff Johns's version.

I don't have much familiarity with Billy/Shazam as a character, so I find this assessment intriguing. I don't feel I can get too far thinking about it until I have a firmer foundation, though. How do you or do the comics define "wisdom," for example? I did some digging, and one of the first things I found described the Wisdom power as follows:

S for the Wisdom of Solomon: Solomon was the third king of united Israel in historical times. According to the Bible God blessed him with supernatural wisdom at his request to lead Israel. Captain Marvel has instant access to a vast amount of knowledge. The wisdom of Solomon is sometimes known as the Wisdom of the Ancients. Captain Marvel has superhuman clairvoyance and awareness. He is provided with counsel and advice in times of need. Captain Marvel has knowledge of all languages, ancient and modern warfare, and can hypnotize or enchant people with his power. The power of wisdom lends him knowledge far beyond mortal comprehension.
  • Superhuman Knowledge: Captain Marvel has exceptional photographic recall and mental acuity allowing him to read and decipher hieroglyphics, recall everything he has ever learned and solve long mathematical equations. Instantaneously he can make intuitive guesses based on limited data; to the point his guesses are almost always correct; also he has a great understanding of divine phenomenon in the mortal world.
  • Clairvoyance: Captain Marvel possesses an uncanny awareness of his circumstances that allows him to turn disadvantages into advantages.
  • Hypnosis: Through sheer power and magic he can hypnotize people for length of time (undetermined). Only those of great willpower can overcome this ability.
  • Omni-lingual: He can speak every language known to humans as well as ancient or dead languages and is able to understand aliens.

From what I can tell, these seem to be closer to actual powers or abilities than a generalized sense of maturity. I'm even left to wonder about people in real life. Can one act child-like and still be wise? In the Bible, I believe part of what moves God to bless Solomon with wisdom is the fact that Solomon wasn't seeking something selfish. If Billy, in a key moment, chooses to share his power with his foster siblings instead of hoard it, or if he makes other crucial choices from a place of fairness and compassion, then is he not acting wise?

That's what I'm saying if granting vast powers (that includes wisedom) can turn anyone into a person having same level of wisdom, power, abilities, then what's the point of choosing ? I mean a person A with great and infinite wisdom will be no different from Person B with same set of abilities.

Clearly, that's not the case as the Wizard is choosy, this means that in-spite of getting wisdom and powers, Billy's original personality is still intact, so if a 15 year old Billy is goofy and clumsy, the adult Captain Marvel will also be somewhat goofy and clumsy, in-spite of having Solomon's Wisdom.

And, how will Billy as captain Marvel use that wisdom ? when will he use it ? He will get better at it with experience.

I feel bad for Tatum honestly

Maybe Disney will at least hear him out for the possibility of playing Gambit in the x-men movies and maybe the opportunity comes for a solo effort sometime in the not too distant future.

He hasn’t played the character on screen yet, so there’s nothing to reboot....

Shazam stuff just seems meh to me. I mean, don't know much about his villains, but it just seems like a bald guy in a coat after him, he also is able to fly. I get the vibe of kid looking like an adult jokes and getting into trouble moments will get old real quick for me. Both Captain Marvel flicks look meh, but both leads look good in the suit. Eh.

Channing Tatum was born to play Catman.

My Barbara Gordon.
