Re: the Whedon article
It’s been alleged (or implied) that Whedon’s attitude toward Cyborg/Fisher was motivated by racism. But it seems to me it’d be relatively easy (PR Spin 101) for Whedon to deflect this charge. I.e., it was WB who mandated a 2-hour runtime. Therefore, a lot of material had to be cut; and the Cyborg sub-plot was just one of many excisions. Unfortunate for Fisher — but nothing to do with racism.
Instead, however, Whedon keeps it personal and doubles down. He maintains that the (black) character’s arc made no sense and that the (black) actor was simply bad. Moreover, Whedon says that prior test screenings confirmed his assessment.
Except… the article makes no mention of ZSJL as a counterpoint to this claim. Indeed, in reviews of the Snyder cut (whether pro or con), Cyborg’s arc and Fisher’s performance are often praised. Yet the interviewer doesn’t bother to challenge Whedon with this detail — or even address it parenthetically. Rather, Whedon is given the last word.
Just because RF was praised after the fact in ZSJL doesn't necessarily mean Whedon is wrong about what test audiences said at the time. It was a different climate and fans/media felt differently about Snyder and his film later than they did post BvS.
note: I don't buy a word the guy says and certainly think he is a racist misogynist. Just giving a reason why the author of the article didn't push back. My guess is very few have any real direct knowledge of what test audiences said (if anything) back when Whedon took over.
