Lounge of Justice - Part 90

Re: the Whedon article

It’s been alleged (or implied) that Whedon’s attitude toward Cyborg/Fisher was motivated by racism. But it seems to me it’d be relatively easy (PR Spin 101) for Whedon to deflect this charge. I.e., it was WB who mandated a 2-hour runtime. Therefore, a lot of material had to be cut; and the Cyborg sub-plot was just one of many excisions. Unfortunate for Fisher — but nothing to do with racism.

Instead, however, Whedon keeps it personal and doubles down. He maintains that the (black) character’s arc made no sense and that the (black) actor was simply bad. Moreover, Whedon says that prior test screenings confirmed his assessment.

Except… the article makes no mention of ZSJL as a counterpoint to this claim. Indeed, in reviews of the Snyder cut (whether pro or con), Cyborg’s arc and Fisher’s performance are often praised. Yet the interviewer doesn’t bother to challenge Whedon with this detail — or even address it parenthetically. Rather, Whedon is given the last word.

Just because RF was praised after the fact in ZSJL doesn't necessarily mean Whedon is wrong about what test audiences said at the time. It was a different climate and fans/media felt differently about Snyder and his film later than they did post BvS.

note: I don't buy a word the guy says and certainly think he is a racist misogynist. Just giving a reason why the author of the article didn't push back. My guess is very few have any real direct knowledge of what test audiences said (if anything) back when Whedon took over.

It’s still kinda weird to me that the writer didn’t really try to counter anything that Joss said. It brings that Vanity Fair interview with Jeff Garlin to mind. I feel like that writer was actually pushing him to really address the full scope and context of the allegations against him. The Whedon interview feels much more passive by comparison.

More women are coming forward with more stories about Whedon on twitter. Bald bastah should've kept quiet and let it go.
You know what is crazy? You go to other sites and despite all these people coming out and back Ray, there are STILL people out there who are saying Ray is a diva, has no case and is just playing the race card. Despite other costars backing him up, despite Cyborg stealing the show in ZSJL and despite actors that worked with Whedon in the past coming forward...........people are still finding a reason to turn this on Ray, single him out and make it sound like he's the problem.

The funniest part of this is there's basically a playbook for these instances now. Dude could've just done the "I'm sorry for the harm my actions caused. I'm listening and trying to do better" song and dance and then waited a few years until most people had forgotten and then try to mount his comeback. He went about his rehab attempt in the stupidest way possible that would just ensure he came off looking guilty.

he said of his now-documented affairs on the set of “Buffy” (while he was married), “I feel f—ing terrible about them ... it messes up the power dynamic.” The New York piece continues: "... he quickly added that he had felt he ‘had’ to sleep with them, that he was ‘powerless’ to resist. ... He had been surrounded by beautiful young women — the sort of women who had ignored him when he was younger — and he feared if he didn’t have sex with them, he would ‘always regret it.’”
What the actual f*** Whedon?

That can't be real...no one is stupid enough to say that honestly.

Even Mel Gibson is in awe of this torpedo job by Whedon.

A glimpse of one of her gadgets: night goggles!

so is the batgirl movie going to be hbo max exclusive and not in theaters?

is it connected to the dceu or is it its own thing?

HBO Max exclusive I believe.

And it's got both Simmons and Keaton in it, so it seems that it'll be part of the new DCEU timeline that Flash will establish. Keaton, I'm guessing, will be the main timeline Batman that's been active since the 80s. I also think we'll get introduced to DCEU Grayson and that this will set up his spinoff along with the Black Canary flick.

That Bald Whedon interview is now really funny to me. Who on his PR team approved this? Dude practically added fuel to his own fire. That awful stupid earring as well. lawd.

Leslie Grace looks great. She is going to kill it. I also don't see Old Man Keaton sticking around after this one. He is most likely just here to set up flashpoint and then hand the ball to Batgirl and Nightwing.

Ray Fisher is a "malevolent force."

Gal Gadot: "English is not her primary language."

I mean, Joss, bubbala, this is not how you do it.

If he had just taken responsibility for some of it (not the racism claims even), just some of the misogyny, and focused on how he has been in therapy, gone to addiction treatment, and has been trying to get better as a person, he may have even come across as more sympathetic. But instead, it goes on the offensive.

"But I was the victim!"

Hustlers

A rewatch.

Jennifer Lopez at over 50 years old, danced and walked in a pole, not for ego, not for money, but for art. Yet, ladies and gentlemen, she was shunned and snubbed. Tis' wasn't with reason nor with any factual counterpoints, but because she wasn't respected both morally as an artist. Even with a g-string and awful mascara, she gave you the audience everything she had, she gave you, magic. There are people who cannot afford to send money but do. People who drive cabs who nurse in hospitals who saw their kids go to Vietnam. Why? Because they care. Because they want to know the truth. Because they want their country back. Because it still belongs to us as long as the people have the guts to fight for what they believe in.

The truth is the most important value we have because if it doesn't endure if the academy committee murders truth if we cannot respect these people then this is not the country I was born in, or the country I want to die in. Jack Daniels wrote: "Authority forgets a dying king." This was never more true than for John F. Kennedy whose murder was probably one of the most terrible moments in the history of our country. We, the people, the jury system sitting in our living rooms or theater rooms, we judge art based on merit, the hope of humanity against government and superficial power of injustices. I ask most of you filled with the marvel theater viewing experience of low attention without looking at your phones, or the awful manner of pausing and continuing your viewing content days later and at times weeks later, "ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country." Do not forget your dying Queen. As hot 50 something actresses who can still dance and get up on that pole is far more rare in this age. Show this Disney viewing world this is still a country "of the people, for the people and by the people." Nothing as long as you live will ever be more important.

I think she’s gonna look great personally. Cinematography will have a big impact of course.
For me I just hope Batgirl turns out to be the first good solo female superhero movie…that isn’t in the past. Unless you count Birds Of Prey(which I personally don’t, and it does seem a little divisive).

Past, present, future…makes no real difference to me. Just want to enjoy the film. I really dug WW and BoP. Not so sweet on WW84 and CM. But that’s fine, other people liked them so all is well.

I know that WB doesn't want to do anything with Snyder or his version of the DCEU with any sequels to Justice League - and I'm not a #restorethesnyderverse guy, believe me.

But I have to wonder at this point - who the heck are the DCEU films even for anymore, then?

The general audience is too burned on most things DCEU.
The only real loyal audience are those that dug the Snyder films.

So the general audience is unhappy, as are the Snyder fans.

Which brings me to the question...who are these DC films for?

It seems like everything WB has in the works has an established audience of nobody in particular.

I mean just because they currently don’t have the audience they want doesn’t mean they’re not gonna keep trying
