Lounge of Justice - Part 90

Ford v Ferrari

A rewatch. Eh, it was kinda a chore to sit through a second time. Yes, the highlight are the racing scenes, but we didn't get enough of them. I just find it a bit hilarious these character cliches with the wife still happened, I sometimes joke around about that type of character in movies, but bloody hell if that character didn't stick out in this one. I actually didn't like Bale here. Some of the scenes are way too ham for me. This ain't a best picture nom to me, but I know I'm the minority there. A solid 6.

I should've rewatched Rush.
Those two movies are pretty much interchangeable to me. I like Mangold just fine but he never wows me (no, not even Logan). I think my favorite film of his is still 3:10 to Yuma, though.

Something about Ford v Ferrari's main conceit rubs me the wrong way. I feel like there was a more interesting movie to be made there from Ferrari's POV. Like, this felt like the equivalent of a movie chronicling Disney's quest to crush the acclaimed auteurs and win Best Picture at the Oscars or something...and asking us to root for Disney because of a couple of quirky and talented animators on their team, lol.

I enjoyed Le Mans 66 (That's what Ford VS Ferrari was called over here), but it wasn't anything special.
Was a bit disappointed by the fight between Jason Bourne and Batman though, not the martial arts masterclass one might have expected.

It's not often I see you talk about horror.
I don't get into it often. Most of my horror fandom is Resident Evil games and Scream movies.

Most of my exposure to horror is dumb characters afraid of something rather easily avoided. The franchise that made me hate horror the most is that stupid SAW franchise with its dumb villain and unbelievable traps and kidnappings.

I'm glad you said RE games and not movies. There's nothing scary about those except how bad in quality they are.
:hehe:

With that franchise I have to be specific about the medium. I'll ignore the live action films and focus on saying the first animated one -Degeneration- tried to focus more on horror and survival than its sequels did.

Live action movies using that name are what I call Alice in Biohazard Land. They have viruses and mutation, so that is something.

The first movie was very good even the second movie was alright. Even the animated movies are good and then it just went down hill from there. I would love for them to try and do RE Biohazard that game had me scared a couple of times.

I saw someone refer to it as the inspiring story of a rich guy heroically using his overwhelming wealth and resources to crush his underdog competitor, and I admit, I chuckled, even though I did enjoy the film.

Even the first movie is really dumb. The second movie has some entertaining action and nice visual fan service.

They failed once they turned RE into an action movie with zombies. Same fate happened in the games with RE 5/6. Got my man Chris punching boulders in a volcano :funny:
I've played RE5 again recently, and it has enough horror to make it a worthy sequel and entry in the series. There is the staple of avoid monsters by running continuously and run around their attacks.
Boulder punching went to the point of extreme.

RE6 did not find any shame in going full on action, especially in Chris scenario with the cable close up attack that works on most monsters. You can work it even if you're amateur in this game and don't need to be a professional with it like people get with the knife for older games.

That's interesting. I kinda veered off the marketing for a while as it was coming across a bit too slapstick-y for me.

I don't get it. The jokes and voice overs from the trailers are still in the movie. It's possible the critics actually like that kind of comedic approach—that it works for these characters and this film. Does it interest you because you're surprised the critics' reactions and tastes differ from your own, or because you genuinely believe the marketing didn't reflect the film accurately?

Plenty of the reviews mention how slapstick-y it is, so it’s likely to me that the film is still exactly that way and not to your tastes, and the majority of critics simply appreciate that style and approach more than you.

I feel like there’s been a weird shift in CBM audiences where, after years of finally getting the genre taken seriously (or ironically, in Deadpool’s case), they’ve gotten into the mindset that camp = bad, but the critics on the whole have never really had that mindset and have always been able to enjoy camp if it’s good camp. Because yes, there is a such thing. And I think them not automatically taking the genre as seriously as a lot of fans do leaves them more open to enjoy things that don’t necessarily toe the popular genre line of the moment.

I predict both this AND WW84, based on the leaked plot, will be largely embraced by critics but have a major uphill battle with winning over a certain portion of the fandom because they don’t conform to the current popular tonal approaches to CBM’s.

DC’s back in the game with a vengeance. Four straight critical wins in a row. Hopefully this cleans up at the box office too.

if Jenkins, Reeves and Gunn deliver, the DC brand could be as rock solid as Marvel’s come end of 2021.

A female gunslinger dragging her dead bounty through the snow to collect her reward. Get Kurt Russell to play her tough father figure mentor, we off to the races. Eh.

Raimi coming in to direct Multiverse of Madness would put it right up at the top of my most anticipated CBM list

Didn’t care about the first movie at all and thought the character was much more interesting in Infinity War.
