Lounge of Justice - Part 90

The problem I have with so called "appropriation" is where do you draw the line? If a black person says a white person is appropriating their culture by say having dreads, can a Chinese person say anyone who is not Chinese shouldn't have Chinese character tattoos? And dreads btw isn't exclusively an African thing. The Mongolians and Vikings (white people) have historically been wearing dreadlocks, so it gets confusing af when you don't know your history or the history of people you claim is appropriating your history. I mean if people want to get THAT anal about it, isn't wearing any type of suit appropriating white people culture from Victorian times?

i can't speak for other people, but the chinese tattoo stuff is fine.
the only thing is sometimes they have the most random of words tatted on them.
like someone will think it's something of signficant meaning, but the tattoo artist probably clowned them by tatting them with a food menu item.
like they thought it meant "thug life" in chinese characters...but it really just says "won ton noodle soup" LOL

Been watching Lovecraft Country and now Jonathan Majors is one my Green Lantern fancasts.

Broadly speaking, you can't appropriate white culture. That, by its definition, is not how appropriation works. That aside, I don't trip about white folks with locks. But if I see a white person with locks and a dashiki...well then yeah I might side eye that depending on the context.

I dunno, it's just very simple to me. I want equity for my people. Give us that, then I won't clown Adele for her bantu knots. But until then, don't talk to me about sharing pieces of my culture. Share me some of them rights first.

I hope you don't also buy into the argument that minorities can't be racist against white people (or at all) too? Appropriation and racism aren't exclusive to white people. Human beings are all the same and are all equally fallible.

That, by its definition, is not how appropriation works.

Appropriation: "the action of taking something for one's own use, typically without the owner's permission."

This is where cultural appropriation falls apart. A culture may have made something popular, such as a Dashiki, but they don't OWN it. It's a piece of clothing that could be made by anyone anywhere, like Indonesia, where it's also popular.

I have a tattoo on my arm that has Chinese characters on them (Kanji). I can only hope they actually mean what they are supposed to mean, but I did verify it before he put them on, but really, even a slight difference and it could mean something completely different.

google translate makes everything more convenient now.

Yeah, googled the words just now and they look close enough, lol. They are done with a thicker ink stroke (not fine lines) and it's been years, so it's hard to be sure, but looks good enough for me. I forget my tattoos are even there most of the time.

Technically speaking, I can wear a damn mariachi hat and fake mustache, some dutch wood shoes, and a yamaka hat all at once, but it doesn't make it right. Especially when hair for both blackmen/women have been a social issue in a lot of situations be it getting a job, or that gym teacher who cut the dreads off some senior against his will, Zendaya being called some drug addict due to her long hair, and plenty of more examples. I also feel like Adele didn't mean anything wrong by it, but she looks damn ridiculous, hilariously so. And to keep it a buck, A LOT of mainstream stuff be it clothing, music, slang comes from us. Miley Cyrus took our stuff, made money and then condoned that same culture which made her millions and embraced her. Plenty more of examples. Yes, Elvis was known as the King, but he took his moves and swag from Little Richard.

Having said all that, Fat Adele and Jamaican Adele can get it. So can Miley.

It's not a matter of buying into anything. That's just not the definition of the phrase. I'm not saying minorities can't be culturally insensitive, but by virtue of being a minority we can't appropriate. Cultural appropriation is rooted in the historical context of colonialism.

Again, I don't think you fully understand the definition of the term. I don't mean this to be insulting, but I honestly think you should review the concept further.

And to piggyback off of BN, I got not actual issue with Adele. She just looks goofy to me. It was a goofy move on her part. But she's been a vocal civil rights proponent IIRC, so I got no beef with her. I dig her music too.

If Adele gained like 20 punds and worked that booty, we could have a problem. Plenty of brothas jumping in her dms.

Every now and then I go back rewatch them Spirit of Truth videos and I just laugh my ass off. I'd be in church every damn sunday if that dude was the preacher. Cant post for obvious reasons.

I understand those concepts just fine and have heard this argument before. I think it's about how we individually define some of these things, which clearly I see differently.

I hope you understand, I usually don't like to comment on this stuff, especially in this fortress of hype solitude. I jumped in because it's agitating that it's somehow ok for someone to tell me or anyone else what they can or cannot wear because they're white, which is essentially what you get to do because of your minority status. It hurts, just like the reverse does.

But I guess, to BN and Chintai's points, we can agree, that big Adele was great Adele. (but hey good on her for getting into shape)

It’s not an individual definition. It just is the literal definition of the phrase.

I’m sorry it hurts you can’t wear certain things. But it also hurts feeling like I could get gunned down by a stranger every time I go outside. It also hurts knowing my family was legally funneled into a redlined district that forced me and a bunch of folks that look like me into poverty/drugs/crime. It also hurts knowing I could go on.

I’m more than happy to share my durag with you just as soon as I start getting some equitable treatment.

Ok fine. It's hard to try to have a conversation with someone filled with as much hate as you. You may experience issues because your Black but life isn't exactly peachy for people just because they're not. I grew up in a ****ty, poor, crime-infested area to a single Mom but you still get to belittle me because it's not a part of your Black experience.

It's a dangerous world out there for us all. Hate to break it to you but people are beaten, robbed, and murdered every day and they're not always Black. The focus in our media may be on that right now but the world is so much more complex.

I’m sorry it hurts you can’t wear certain things.

I'm sorry you don't see the hate behind your own wokeness, it's actually kinda racist itself. In your world, no one else's problems matter because they're not Black problems. If you seek equality, seek to understand. Be compassionate and maybe you'll receive compassion. You can just ignore me if you want. Promise, this is the last you'll hear from me on the matter.

I haven't been in a bad mood but my anxiety has been through the roof since yesterday. Something about this has just shook me to the core.

Still can't really grasp it, the injustice of it. It took my dad quickly 4 years ago and that was tough to grasp, still is, but to see it happening to a young man like Boseman....words fail tbh.

Sorry to hear about your father. My deepest sympathies. I can't even imagine. :csad:

Breh, but how hard is to understand why some black folks would find what Adele did offensive? Seems like you lacking compassion and understanding right there. I also acknowledge that she getting more exaggerated hate due to the twitter/internet media world we live in. We can't walk in your shoes, just like you cant walk in ours, and of course the world is far more complex than black issues, but RIGHT NOW IN AMERICA, they are openly killing us, man. Tensions are high, especially when our leader in chief is adding flames to racial tension, which is an embarrassment as an American to see.

I also apologize in advance if I misunderstand you, but you coming off like this dude here:

And to that:

I just want hnnngh to unite us all.
