The Force Awakens Luke Skywalker - Mark Hamill

Hamil should of lost more weight, costume looks good, but i was hoping for more of Lukes personal Touch (like the all black outfit in Jedi) then a "wise older jedi master" look that seems standard.

I actually think it's a bad angle, because with the beard and upfront he looks slim. Plus, if this means anything, he still has even more time to work out now for the next few movies (since his role will be bigger)

It is the style of robes. Look at Ewan. They even made him look fat at the wrong angle.

Also reminds me of the Brazilian book cover of Crucible of Luke with a beard.

I was hoping Star Wars was passed the whole black evil and white is good motif

If it did it would feel less like Star Wars imo.

Took me awhile to find the pic but I like the palette swap. He looks great.

Putting both Luke and Kylo all in black would be a bit much, I think.

Someone mentioned a few pages back that Luke may be already turned to the darkside.

Highly doubtful and it would ruin the entire LUKE aspect of beating the emporer and proclaiming he is a JEDI.
Anyhow, while Lucas was orginaly working Jedi‘s story through its kinks. He had thoughts of Luke taking and wearing Vader’s helmet after Vader dies and proclaim, “Now he was Vader,” giving in to the Dark Side. It’s easy to see why this would be extremely problematic. It’s a twist that comes out of left field and completely goes against Luke’s character. It would essentially ruin the entire series and make everything we had invested in for naught. Luke was obviously upset that his father died as soon as he came back to the Light Side, but there are better ways to honor his legacy than to put on his mask and become a Sith Lord. Thankfully, Lucas changed his mind and went with the ending we all know and love.

Pillar-of-Light Luke looks great. Glad to see a continuation of the traditional Jedi robes from the saga. He sure has become like Obi Wan. Also, wearing those robes, I don't think he's half-mad or anything mentioned in the old rumors. I think he's been planning something while in hiding. Good. That's good.

I'm loving Luke's look. White/Khaki has been his colour - the only reason he wore black in ROTJ was to draw parallels to Vader. His costume is essentially Vader's costume from ANH, but without the helmet and torso piece (also the same as Anakin's costume from ROTS).

After his temptation to turn dark, you'd think he'd go back to his preferred colours. I like that they kept with the sleeveless robe like his robe in ROTJ. Seems like he'll either have two robes (the light one in the leaked pic and the black one in the trailer) or just the black/dark-brown one shown in the trailer.

The color schemes on Luke's clothing in the OT was always intentional. He starts out with tan, goes to grey, and then to black. Reflects his inner struggle with the dark side. Then finally there's his lappel is folded over showing the white underneath the black at the end of Jedi, signifying his turn away from the dark side. That's why I really hope the rumors about Luke going bad are wrong. It would completely undo his entire arc and hard-won victory in the OT.

I love that Luke looks very Ben kenobi

Exactly

^ He's referring to the flap that opens up on his black tunic, showing white underneath. Happens s at some point after he officially rejects the Dark Side.

It'd be nice to get some sort of homage to this costume somewhere in this new trilogy.

Not really, people change as they get older their view points change and the way they look at things. If the rumours are true about Luke it would be nice to see Luke be more then a obi-wan clone or some heroes journey motif he was in the Ot. I think JJ mentioned explopring that was one of the reasons he took the job.

Dark or light all Luke did was make a choice, the darkside is just a choice.

In the low-quality leaked shot, you can make out what may be a white version of the tunic underneath his Jedi robes.

The issue is that the choice to turn away from the darkside was pretty definitively made in Episode VI. He literally decides that he would rather die than give in and kill his father, a man who by all accounts deserved to die. I get that in 30 years the character will have and should evolve but going back on that would be too far. Not to mention this movie already has its fair share of villains.

It is a white version of the tunic. People forget that both Obi Wan and Yoda wore the same tunic in the OT except in brown. Luke's full ROTJ costume on Tatooine was basically just the same Jedi robes that Obi-Wan wore except in a more youthful, athletic cut and in the colour black to represent the temptation of the dark side.

Luke's outfit in RotJ is vastly different from anything in the prequels or even what Obi-Wan and Yoda wore in the OT. Luke wears one outfit, with different layers. If you look at the leaked photo, the neck looks a lot like Luke's uniform from RotJ.

I admit you are right that Obi-Wan's tunic is a little different. I mis-remembered it because it seems to be misdrawn as more similar to Luke's in artwork. However, OT Yoda still wears a brown tunic with a nehru collar like Luke's. Nevertheless, I still disagree that they are vastly different costumes. The vest thing that Luke wears in the first half of ROTJ is still derivative of Ob-Wan's Jedi robes from ANH. There is the tunic, then base layer that overlaps at the waist, which then has shawl layer and then finally the waist wrap. It is just a lot shorter than Obi-Wan's and in Sith colours. Interestingly, you will notice that Luke loses this "Jedi" layer of this outfit when he gives himself up to Vader. Perhaps more visual representation of his temptation and peril before he passes the test.

That is the ony similar part. Everything else is different. Luke is wearing something that almost looks like a military uniform. This was the original idea for a Jedi uniform.
