EPISODE 3, CHAPTER 1

YESTERDAY - 6:57 PM

As the sun begins to set on another weekday on the upper west side of Miscfilms City, Aster Oldman helps Tzarinna Raines unload her car filled with groceries into her apartment. Entering inside the small but cozy one bedroom flat, the two set down several large paper bags stuffed to the brim with breads, vegetables, seasonings and drinks.

TZARINNA: I really appreciate it, Aster.

ASTER: Hey, anytime. It's kind of good to get away from the desk, hang out with co-workers. Get away from the mundane.

He adjusts his glasses.

TZARINNA: Yeah.....sure.....

Tzarinna chuckles.

ASTER: So, a dinner party, huh? Big occassion?

TZARINNA: No, it's just a neighbor thing. Helps the whole bonding between building-mates. We've been doing it for a couple of months now.

ASTER: So, where do you want the....

TZARINNA: You can just set that down over there.

She points to a counter, and Aster sets down a bag. Tzarinna turns to the dining room table, where her black laptop sits waiting. She flips it open, and the bright screen flickers on. She moves her right middle finger along the mouse pad and clicks on an icon labeled "MAIL".

The Inbox window appears on the screen, and Tzarinna's eyes briefly scan the list of incoming messages.

TZARINNA: 25 new e-mails? Lovely.

ASTER: Any spam? I just wrote a code last week that'll actually go through all of your incoming mail, scan for viruses, and if there are any malicious programs, it'll send those messages right back to the sender and infect their computer.

Tzarinna turns, raises an eyebrow curiously, and then laughs.

TZARINNA: Well, I'll take you up on that offer if I run into any problems.

She turns back around to face the screen, browsing through the list of senders and subjects. She immediately stops at one particular address: "[email protected]"

Tzarinna's eyes widen. She then focuses her attention from the address to the subject: "Mr. Peg"

She backs away slowly from the computer, which catches Aster's attention.

ASTER: Something wrong?

Tzarinna's mind is racing.

ASTER: Tzarinna?

TZARINNA: (suddenly) Yeah, yeah. I'm fine. Um, you can go ahead and leave. I really appreciate your help, again. Thank you.

Aster is puzzled.

ASTER: Um...o...okay. I'll see you tomorrow.

TZARINNA: Same.

Tzarinna watches as Aster exits the kitchen, then listens as he opens the front door and closes it behind him. She turns back to the computer, and looks down again at the subject of the e-mail on the screen....

DAY 1 - 7:21 AM

It's an early Thursday morning inside Norman Storms' spacious apartment. As he adjusts his black sports coat and heads into the kitchen, the smell of eggs and pancakes quickly surrounds him. He sniffs the air, then steps into the kitchen to find Audrey over the stove making breakfast. She's wearing a light brown sweater and jeans, her hair bundled up into a ponytail.

Feeling Norman's presence, she turns and smiles.

AUDREY: Good morning! I didn't know if you'd be hungry, so I went ahead and whipped up some hotcakes. It's the least I can do for....

Norman is pleasantly surprised.

NORMAN: Um....wow. Thanks. I usually don't eat much in the morning, but I appreciate it. How'd you sleep last night?

AUDREY: Really well, actually. I had to turn my phone off. Too many people trying to call me all at once about a million different things. But, I feel good.

NORMAN: Look, I don't want you to feel like I'm trapping you here....

AUDREY: Don't worry about it. I understand how you're bosses would feel if they found out I was staying here.

NORMAN: It would get pretty....

AUDREY: Awkward?

NORMAN: Something like that.

AUDREY: I can hang around here for a couple of days. I wouldn't have come if I didn't feel comfortable.

NORMAN: Thanks, Audrey.

AUDREY: You were right.

She pauses.

AUDREY: It's better to deal with something like this with someone, rather than....

NORMAN: Being alone?

She nods and smiles. Norman smiles back, then exits the apartment.

DAY 1 - 8:15 AM

The grid is bustling with activity as desk officers and field officers alike catch up with the latest overnight developments. Hunter is already at his desk typing away, as Bella enters through the sliding doors. She catches sight of him at his desk and raises an eyebrow, surprised. She sets her stuff down at her desk.

BELLA: Wow. Look who decided to show up to work on time.

Hunter shrugs.

HUNTER: So I decided to come in a little early today. No big deal.

BELLA: No big deal? You're Hunter Ryder. Mr. Fashionably Late. Did something happen last night?

HUNTER: (mildly offended) No.

BELLA: Wait a second.....did Sugar, Spice, and Everything Nice dump you?

HUNTER: Not funny.

BELLA: Ah, come on, Hunt. Lighten up. It's Thursday.

Hunter shakes his head. Bella turns to see Tzarinna at her desk, her hair tied up and untidy and with papers scattered in a mess across her table. Bella turns back to Hunter.

BELLA: Is Tzarinna okay?

HUNTER: I don't know. She's been acting really jumpy since she came in.

BELLA: Weird.

Tzarinna sifts through a stack of files on her desk, trying to locate a particular document. A small bead of sweat trickles down her forehead. As she does this, Hank Byrdmann, sporting his usual dark suit, tie, and jacket, approaches her area.

BYRDMANN: Did you by any chance...

TZARINNA: (snappy) ...Receive the recent audio tapes on Mr. Morg? Yes. Yes I did.

Byrdmann tilts his head back at the abruptness of her response.

BYRDMANN: Um....good. We'll be meeting about it in two minutes. Carry on.

He walks away. Tzarinna takes a deep breath, and continues to go through her files, still trying to find a specific document.

**********

Inside the meeting room, Byrdmann heads the table with Norman, Hunter, Bella, Tzarinna, and Aster to the sides. The flat screen in front of them displays a photo of a spectacled, middle-aged man in a black suit meeting with what looks to be a hooker inside a parking garage.

BYRDMANN: The man on the screen is Jacob Morg, a chief judge and one of the most prolific judicial figures in all of the UHK. He's handled 125 trials over the past four years alone, more than double the next closest judge. Anybody who works that much is obviously compensating for something, and apparently we know what that something is.

HUNTER: He likes him some ****es.

Norman grins.

BYRDMANN: This photo was taken nearly two months ago outside a casino near Hype Square. Tzarinna?

Tzarinna, who had seemingly been zoned out of the conversation, snaps her head back to attention.

TZARINNA: Yes?

BYRDMANN: Next photo.

TZARINNA: Oh, yes. Sorry.

Byrdmann subtly shakes his head. Tzarinna clicks the Enter key on the keyboard underneath her section of the table, changing the image to another photo of Jacob Morg and a stripper, this time getting inside a limo in a back alley.

BYRDMANN: This photo was taken a week later. Also near the same casino.

BELLA: Pardon my ignorance, but I'm not seeing the problem here. So the guy likes to have a kinky good time with prostitutes every now and then. What's that got to do with national security?

NORMAN: To my knowledge, Jacob Morg has been involved in several high profile trials involving homeland terrorists. He was the judge who handled the shooting inside the G.A.M.E. Plaza, and the bombing of the North Technical Center a year later. Both attacks were attributed to the same group, the Haydelishas, religious radicalists.

HUNTER: And weren't both cases thrown out in court?

NORMAN: Supposedly for a lack of concrete evidence, even though every section of the intelligence service found more than enough signs pinpointing that the attacks came from the Haydelishas.

BELLA: So what are we saying? That this guy is in bed with this group?

BYRDMAN: Probably. But confirmation of such is proving to be very difficult. Tzarinna?

TZARINNA: Um.....yes?

BYRDMANN: The tape.

TZARINNA: Oh, yeah, well...

Norman raises an eyebrow at Tzarinna's awkward body language.

TZARINNA: Well, we received an audio recording of a phone conversation that Mr. Morg had with an anonymous individual. Just as the conversation is about to become specific, a beep can be heard, and then....static. Our tracing signal was cut off.

NORMAN: Someone doesn't want us to hear the juicy details.

BYRDMANN: So we're taking a different approach to this one. We're going to try to get close to him, and possibly force him to resign.

BELLA: And how are we planning on doing that?

BYRDMANN: I think you know the answer to that one.

Norman grins. Bella realizes what's going on.

BELLA: Oh, come on. What are you saying? Entrapment?

BYRDMANN: Something along those lines, yes.

BELLA: This is absurd! You want me to sleep with this man in front of surveillance just to get him to quit his job?

HUNTER: Let me just say for the record, I'm glad this guy's not gay. Because I so wasn't going to take it up the butt for my country.

Bella gets up and leaves the room.

Byrdmann sighs.

HUNTER: I'll....go...talk to her.

Hunter leaves. Norman shakes his head, with a smirk.

**********

Later in the morning, Tzarinna remains alone at her desk, still going through files hurriedly. Norman approaches her area.

NORMAN: Is everything okay?

TZARINNA: (snaps) I'm fine.

NORMAN: Yeah....I'm pretty sure you're not fine.

TZARINNA: It's nothing for you to worry about. Just let it go.

NORMAN: Tzar, we've been working together for two years now. I'm pretty sure I can tell when something's troubling you.

TZARINNA: (sharply) Look, when I ask you how you're doing do you ever open up and tell me? No. So I don't need you in my face pestering me about my problems.

Norman nods his head.

NORMAN: Okay, okay. You're right. Sorry I asked.

He starts to walk away. Tzarinna sighs deeply.

TZARINNA: Norman....

Norman spins around. Tzarinna lowers her voice.

TZARINNA: Look, you have to promise me you will NOT tell anyone else about this.

NORMAN: Not a word.

Tzarinna sighs. And lowers her voice even more. Norman leans in close to her desk.

TZARINNA: Have you ever heard of the Mr. Peg photo?

NORMAN: Can't say I have.

TZARINNA: Supposedly it's a Class B "No Eyes" document, which means that it's meant to be used, and then once the project it illustrates is completed....

NORMAN: (finishes her statement) .... the plans and all records of the plans are to be destroyed on sight. So what does this thing illustrate?

TZARINNA: I ca..........

She sighs, unable to even finish her sentence.

NORMAN: Tzar, if this is a matter of national security, I need to know what's going on. You have my word that none of this will leave my lips. Or fingers.

TZARINNA: It's suppose to outline a secret superweapon designed by a scientist, Joseph Peg. A weapon capable of destroying a small country in one shot.

Norman turns and looks behind him to see if anyone is near them. No one. He turns back and lowers his voice more.

NORMAN: I don't understand. I've never heard of something like that.

TZARINNA: To everyone outside of the board of individuals who ordered its creation, it doesn't exist.

NORMAN: Who was on that board?

TZARINNA: Apparently, individuals at the highest levels of government.

Norman pauses, soaking this all in.

NORMAN: How do you know this?

TZARINNA: Because I knew a man on that board. Hal Woods.

NORMAN: Hal Woods? He was a chief moderator working directly under the prime minister. You mean to tell me there's some secret weapon created by the government that M Hype-5 isn't aware of?

TZARINNA: No faction of the security service is aware of it. Only the people who sat on that committee and were there to discuss it.

NORMAN: And Hal Woods was one of them?

TZARINNA: Yes. But shortly after the supposed proposal of the document, he resigned. He was afraid of what the government was creating, what they might do with a weapon that powerful. He couldn't take the pressure of maintaining a secret of that magnitude.

NORMAN: Where is Woods?

Tzarinna shakes her head, seemingly fighting back tears of fear.

TZARINNA: He sent me an e-mail last night.

NORMAN: He tried to contact you?

TZARINNA: But that's impossible.

NORMAN: How so?

Tzarinna pauses.

TZARINNA: Because Hal Woods died three years ago.

 Once again, I enjoyed reading your fic. Love the relationships all the characters seem to have with one another. Glad to see Audrey & Norman still getting along. & I still  Bella & Hunter. They're great.
Mr.Peg..haha. Somethin that'll always be talked about on the Hype.
Overall, great read. Can't wait to read what'll happen next with Tzar & Norman.

Good chapter. I hope the team investigates who the members of the committee are and what happend to them.

Ooooo, great ending lines. Love all of the characters' interaction, and glad to see my character is still around :o

I am still waiting for Hunter and Norm to settle the serious sexual tension.

:wow: Oh snap, son. Damn fine cliff hanger, I'm feeling the tension.

:lmao:

jag

Hella great cliff hanger, awesome as always.

Morg's a ****emonger. :lmao:

Awesome first chapter, i love the simple scene between Tza and Aster, it gives us a look at a different side of her character.

The mystery involving the Mr. Peg photo is intriguing and Morg the corrupt ****e lover is juicy stuff. :woot:

Some cool character bites in this one as well, Bella upset at getting pimped out again, Hunter in early! :wow: and Norm, less glum and moody, Audrey has put some steam in his strides.

Look forward to the next chapter.

O my! Another masterpiece by the master of fanfics! Very impressive, cmill. Not to mention intriguing with all the cliffhangers and the mystery of Mr. Peg and Hal Woods.

Once again, the interactions between the characters are superb, beginning with the light conversations Norman and Audrey, followed by Tzarinna and Aster and the fun duo of Hunter and Bella. What got me most was the hush hush conversation between Norman and Tzarinna. It makes me feel like I've to be so close to the screen to listen in on the secret.

Haydelishas!? And Morg's a ****emonger! Who'd have thunk?!! :D

Looking forward to find out more about the secret weapon and the group of people who knew about it.

And another thing... looks like Audrey is a good influence on Norm.

PS. Why is Bella always getting pimped out? :cmad: :csad:

Thank you for the comments, ladies and gents. They are...wait for it...always appreciated. :D

Love the relationships all the characters seem to have with one another.

Thanks, SML. The funny thing about the characters is that I already know how the series and their arcs are going to play out over time, so I try to build these little foundations every time I write a scene between, say, Norman and Byrdmann or Bella and Hunter.

Basically just trying to make the relationships as real as possible so as we move along and things begin to develop, the developments make sense.

Mr.Peg..haha. Somethin that'll always be talked about on the Hype

Yuppers. :D

I had to do my own research into this thing. So for you Hype veterans, look out for all the nuggets!

I hope the team investigates who the members of the committee are and what happend to them.

I may (or may not) leave the identities of the committee a mystery. It might be something that comes back later, or a twist in this particular story. We'll see how it shapes up.

O my! Another masterpiece by the master of fanfics! Very impressive, cmill.

Awwww shucks, B. :O

Haydelishas!? And Morg's a ****emonger! Who'd have thunk?!!

Crazy. I know. :lmao:

And another thing... looks like Audrey is a good influence on Norm.

Hunter Rider said:
Norm, less glum and moody, Audrey has put some steam in his strides.

Oh, most definitely. She's going to play a very important role over the next few stories and her relationship with him.

Why is Bella always getting pimped out?

Because she's just so darn amazing. Man can't resist her, which makes her the ultimate superweapon. :hehe:

Awesome first chapter, i love the simple scene between Tza and Aster, it gives us a look at a different side of her character.

Thanks, Hunt. I was trying to think of a way to start this story off with something different for you guys, and I thought pairing those two in a scene would be a nice sequence.

I am still waiting for Hunter and Norm to settle the serious sexual tension.

:cmad:

Love all of the characters' interaction, and glad to see my character is still around

Thank ya, ATP. And Audrey will be hanging around for a while.

New chapter should be up sometime this week.

Cmill, your priorities are all messed up. You need to post a new chapter soon. And by "soon" I mean like, in the very immediate future. Thanks.

I try not to let this long go in between chapters, but life has been *hectic* to say the least. However the good news is that this will be a slow week, which means a new chapter is highly likely.

You've turned me into a big M Hype-5 fan so that is good news to me and I look forward to the new chapter very much.

Looking forward to the next chapter aswell Cmill. I really love this series.
