If The Mad Hatter is to appear in a possible post-Dark Knight movie who do you think should play him? And what approach do you think should be taken to the character?

Tom Cruise? Sinister/insane approach- think 'Vanilla Sky'...I'll think of more later.

Robin Williams is an obivous choice look at the TAS hatter and pic of Williams its dead on. I think him as a sexual predator who uses mind control to get his victims for his wonderland.

To cast somebody just because they look exactly like one version is a pretty stupid reason. Acting should never be secondary.

I think Mad Hatter is the most overrated character in the comics, and I hope to god they dont use him. Dont really expect them to.

Dustin hoffman looks sorta like him, AND would probably do the character justice on a Nolan film (either that or steve buscemi, dont ask why).

Im imagining him as someone who supplies weapons/technology for Two face's growing army, then somewhere down the track he is found doing something that enrages Two face (like molesting little girls) and becomes subject to an ill-fated coin toss. Surviving being shot (twice) by Two face turns him insane, scarecrow style.

Andy Dick...

HAHAHA just kidding...

Yet, in all seriousness.
Kevin Spacey would be a good choice for acting skills. But he's Lex Luthor. So that's a no.

Definitely think that Ralph Fiennes could pull that role off, without a doubt.

How about Alan Rickman?

Those are some good choices but I hope they never use him.

This is just a hypothetical thread, anyway...He's also at the bottom of my list for Batman's adversaries...But these are my hypothetical choices...I have fun playing casting director.

Great choices especially on Alan Rickman.

Martin Short. I'd have the Hatter as creepy pedophile abducting Gotham's homeless children and brainwashing them into committing crimes for him. Batman then, of course, begins looking into the case, and learns of the disturbed genius mind of Jervis Tetch.

Hoping that was all a clever, intricate joke...Including the casting choice.

Here is my personal opinion on the matter:

The Mad Hatter is introduced as a minor criminal involved in the illegal slave trade (Something that still exists even now).
He owns a rundown apartment block and uses each room as a "cell".
He is obsessed with the workings of the human mind and how to control people. As these films are about Batman's beginings Tetch wouldn't have developed the microchip system and instead relies on conventional torture to break down and finally "programme" the people he has purchased (Sleep deprivation, constant noise, that kind of thing).
With his minions he conspires to "rob" the maternity ward of Gotham Hospital. Reasoning that babies are the perfect test subjects and that the women can be impregnated by himself to create a "family" of sorts. Not for any perverted cause (Because I do not feel that he is a child molestor) but mainly to ease his own lonliness and surround himself with people who really like him (An extension of the "All you've waited for is a puppet" theme from TAS).

As for an actor to play this role I recommend John Simm, an underrated actor who could bring a lot to the role. Both in terms of psychotic energy and allowing the audience to sympathise with him.

Sam Neil, definately,Sam Neil

I've always thought Dustin Hoffman would be a great Hatter. I think he could be a great character in Nolan's universe involved with human trafficking or something.

Can somebody explain why Martin Short of all people in the world is the most popular choice for Mad Hatter? He must be one of the worst actors in hollywood. How anybody can think hes a good actor is strange. How anybody can think he's the best of all actors for the role id beyond be. How most people think hes the best actor for the role is one of the biggest mysterys of man kind. And get this, he has already played the Mad Hatter.

Dustin Hoffman is just extremely overqualified.

You know, I've been saying for years that Martin Short would be a great Mad Hatter. Though, I'm not sure I'd go in the direction you would with the character

Well, what direction would you go in? Do you have any ideas?

He's a child rapist and cult leader.

He would have a cult, called "Wonderland" where lost children, homeless children, and runnaways could come to be "saved" The children, would all be young girls and if Hatter had his way- be blond haired, blue eyed.

He wouldn't have far fetched mind control methods and hats, just very crude mind control tactics, such as sleep deprivation, drugs, etc. His quest wouldn't be anything large, just trying to find a concoction that would keep one of his "Alice's" in a dream like state permanently. Those test subjects who do not make the grade, are abused and executed.

Batman begins to see a body count of missing children grow to an insane number and has to track down this new threat. It works best if Robin is in the story- as he is the same age as the girls and could have a friend in danger...

Timothy Spall, end of story.
But I have to make it known I have no desire what-so-ever to EVER see Mad Hatter in a movie.

That sounds like an awful, awful movie. Seriously, is that something you'd ever be interested in seeing up on the big screen? As in, Christopher Nolan (or whoever) directing a big budget Batman movie with this as the plot?

I don't personally think that Hatter is a rapist/kiddy fiddler. He identifies most with children and has an idealised view of them. If pushed he could become violent but I don't think that any sexual crime against kids is something he'd go for. It's all about control and getting them to stay with him.
I do agree that in the past he hasn't been handled well. But try reading Gotham Central: Unresolved. Best Mad Hatter story I've ever read. What he needs is the definitive origin story that will give him credibility. It worked for The Joker, it worked for Two-Face and it can work for him.

I'm personally not a fan of the character Mad Hatter at all; he just seems to be one of those characters who leans a little more towards characters like Joker or Penguin or anyone else. And I don't think he could really fit into Nolan's world of BatMan's villians or in film; ya know I think he's great and pulls of a cool team with ScareCrow in LH and DV, but he just doesn't quite cut it in my book. If anyone was gonna play him though, I think I'd at least choose Mike Myers. :word: :brucebat:

You have to keep children out of it. Let's just pretend that's a mandate from WB. Because it would be.

The important thing is that all of his girls are HOT. They're all swedish models. They talk the same, look the same, shoot the same. That way when he busts down the door with six of these gals everyone is more than willing to be robbed by them. He uses a combination of technology and hypnotic phrases. I'd also drop most of the Alice and rhyming stuff; he doesn't actually think he's the Hatter from the story and he's not developmentally ******ed like the Hatter from Arkham Asylum. He just thinks it's a cool gimmick and he dresses all the Swedish models like Snow White, Cinderella, Littel Red riding Hood. He's not a main villain, for that complexity you need to involve his childlike mind and that's just innappropriate for a screen Batman imo, it's boring and cheesy and I'd rather see him fight someone else than a kid in a giant hat. For a movie he can only be a bit player like Scarecrow, someone for Two-Face to deal with.
