Sony Spin-Off Madame Web spin-off in the works

You mean they should have sold this as a superhero movie from the get-go? This is clearly a foreign concept for Sony.
The costumes being visible in the pictures (posters) would have enticed more people. Their marketing is weird. The movie is out neXt month and there is still no 2nd trailer.

This feels like a throwaway movie for Sony.

It does but it then begs the question why make this at all? As for them hiding the costumes, the only explanation I can come up with is that they're only featured in the last ten minutes of the movie and they don't want to oversell it.

I get what they are going for, but its still not great. Really needs the sunglasses, I think.

Why do none of them have real masks? Imagine Spider-Man without the mask...

Same reason why Peter's mask is always off or in pieces in the climax, to help emote.

Besides, Julia's is the only one who really had a mask in the comics.

Ezekiel and Madame Web are nothing like their comic counterparts so clearly they are not faithfully adapting and it wouldn't matter much because this is a different medium that has different rules anyway. In fact Ezekiel does wear a mask and has a whole suit here even if he doesn't in the source material, because I guess they wanted to make the Spider-Man connections even more obvious. But my issue with the masks is there's zero practicality. Either make actual masks that hide their faces or don't bother at all. These look really silly. :funny:

Of course that's a detail that will barely matter in the end, I just wanted to mention it every time I saw those posters because it's such an easy task to perform and they can't even accomplish that!

In once sense, I agree. But... I’ve sometimes mused about how to make the Supes/Clark Kent disguise more convincing. And a common response is: “Dude, it’s fantasy — the willing suspension of disbelief.” So… if we allow that a pair of glasses work as subterfuge, I guess we must cut the same slack for feeble masks. I.e., we accept — and pretend to ourselves — that the masks are more concealing than they actually are…?

I guess I can accept it more with Superman because it has become an iconic part of the character after all those years, and to be fair, in many cases like the Reeve version he changes his hair, posture, voice, mannerisms and truly transforms to a different character, while here it just feels like they just didn't bother to think this through. :funny: And again it's such a small gripe, because the costumes would look ugly even with proper masks, but I just find it a weird choice.

Reactions: Dr.
Man, this movie is a train wreck waiting to happen. My daughter watched the preview and asked if Mayday, Gwen, or Jessica Drew was in it. I told her no. She said, "then who cares"?
Julia is literally the only one I care about in the lot. Also, Dakota as the lead...not feeling it.

How bad is this movie?
It comes out in a few days, and a comic movie discussion board isn't discussing it.
That's how bad it is.

Not so. I've seen a fair bit of schadenfreude — "pleasure derived from an other's misfortune." That's a kind of discussion.

One of the worst comic book superhero movies I've ever seen. Like a spiritual successor to Catwoman.

The only bright spots in the movie are some funny moments with Dakota Johnson.

Awful script and dialogue. Ezekiel is a terrible villain. Nothing makes sense. Character motivations make no sense.

The girls don't really do anything. They are bystanders and mostly reacting. Madame Web's powers are uninteresting. She's basically a fortune teller or oracle. She's not a superhero.

It feels like no one read the script before it was green lit and no one vetted the story. Ezekiel's costume looks terrible. His motivation makes no sense.

If you wanted to do a story about the Spider-Totems and Spider-Dieties, Ezekiel as the villain makes no sense. The villain you'd want to use is Morlun. Ezekiel would be in there as like a mysterious enigmatic character who maybe trains the heroes but has ulterior motives and isn't completely trustworthy.

Cringe-inducing dialogue.

The worst part about this is that the movie wants to make you think it's a prequel to MCU Spider-Man and this is his origin story.

Similar level to Fant4stic.
