Don Payne talks Fantastic Four 2

While writing a Fantastic Four movie was a dream come true for Don Payne, writing a script involving the FF and the Silver Surfer was undoubtedly heaven: "Some of my earliest memories were of watching the Fantastic Four cartoon on Saturday morning," the scribe reflects.

Detailing the genesis of the script for Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Payne explains, "I think the studio had been trying to develop a Silver Surfer standalone movie and it just wasn't working. Frankly, the Silver Surfer started with the Fantastic Four; I think you need to ground this extraterrestrial character with human characters to make it work. "In the film," he continues, "he's really just introduced as a mysterious figure and we get hints of his origin and personality. If it's successful, then this is really setting up a standalone movie where you get more into his origins and his philosophising."

As to the relationship between the FF and the Surfer, Payne offers that the "Fantastic Four are trying to figure out exactly who or what the Silver Surfer is. They view him as a dangerous force, so initially their relationship is adversarial. Ultimately that evolves into something else. There's a connection between them, especially between the Silver Surfer and Sue; more of a compassionate connection."

While he won't talk specifics, Payne feels that the plot is true to the source material. "It deals with issues of personal sacrifice for the greater good," he emphasises. "There are darker moments in this one, though I would argue that the comic always had comedic moments. They can be squabbling one minute, and then the story could turn serious where they're trying to save people."

The Next List
The Changing of the Guard Starts Now. Meet Boston’s New Buzz-Makers. With Chris Evans, the Next Ben Affleck.

Chris Evans

the Next Ben Affleck

After he caused a minor sensation as Johnny Storm in the 2005 comic-book hit Fantastic Four, Chris Evans recalled a pre-Armageddon Ben Affleck—easy to look at, reasonably talented, but with the jury still out on his long-term career prospects. This could be the year that removes that question mark, as roles in four high-profile films promise to do for the 25-year-old Sudbury native what the 1998 asteroid thriller did for Affleck: rocket him past the critical uncertainty and into the realm of the A list, where reviews become almost irrelevant, paparazzi document your every Starbucks run, and crash-and-burn romances with hip-hopping, Bentley-driving starlets seem perfectly normal.

Evans, for his part, is taking nothing for granted. At the Manhattan studio where this month’s cover was shot, he describes his morning spent filming scenes for April’s The Nanny Diaries, in which he plays the love interest to Scarlett Johansson’s stressed-out Manhattan babysitter. He’s not on set every day; it’s possible Scarlett doesn’t know who he is, he jokes. Evans has even been mistaken for a set hand. But he’s got his fans, for sure. Little kids went nuts for Fantastic Four, and for the fire-throwing superhero he played. More than a year after the film was released, they still call to him on the street, “Hey, Johnny! Flame on!” Grownups have taken note, too: Some critics called his performance the only good thing about the movie.

Another Affleckian trait: No matter how big he gets, Evans wants you to know he’s just a guy from Boston. His mom’s family still lives in Somerville (his uncle is the congressman and former mayor Mike Capuano). And when Evans visits, he makes a point of stopping by Leone’s Submarine Shop for a 6-inch sausage-and-pepper. He remains conscious of doing right by his hometown pals, of being almost obsessively true to his roots (“Like, I hate that I have frosted tips right now,” he says, referring to the cloying highlights he dons for Diaries). At Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High, he played lacrosse, wrestled, and dabbled in drama club. “I think I thought I was cool,” he says. “I don’t think I was, though. I was 140 pounds and had a bowl haircut. I didn’t have sex until I was a senior. I was terrified.

“My friends think it’s a weird world,” Evans says. “They think I’m a horrible actor—they can’t take me seriously.” When his then girlfriend, actress Jessica Biel, was named Esquire‘s Sexiest Woman Alive in 2005, the phone calls came pouring in. “They’d say, ‘Dude, where you gonna go from there? It’s all downhill,’” he says. “I was like, ‘You’re totally right.’”

But they weren’t, or at least that’s not what it looks like now—not with Evans set to reprise the role of Johnny Storm at least once more: A sequel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, is due out in June. He’ll also be heard in the animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, along with Sarah Michelle Gellar and Patrick Stewart, and seen in the indie flick Sunshine, helmed by Trainspotting director Danny Boyle. Finally, he’ll star opposite Bryce Dallas Howard in The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond, based on a Tennessee Williams play. As Affleck himself once said about a career on the cusp: “Sometimes it’s like, ‘Here’s your five minutes in the toy store. You gotta do all the good movies you can before Chuck Woolery rings the bell.’” —Alyssa Giacobbe

I don't know if these have been posted yet, but here are scans from the April 2007 issue of Empire (the one featuring the Silver Surfer on the cover). Sorry the quality isn't better. Mods, feel free to take these down if they aren't allowed.

Holy hell nice find.

If you click on the above pic and read it it says: "...this pic ties into the 3rd one which is "The Coming of Galactus"!!!

Did I read that right????

Now that is the best news I've read this year about any comic film if I read it right. I also see The Thing has a smaller role in this film...obviously and Dr. Doom has a whole new story behind him.

Yeah!

Is this a different article from the last Empire we had????

I don't have time to read it right now.....

This is great. So this film apparently set's up Galactus and somehow the FF and the sS and everyone stop him by the end of the film...or do they? Is this film gonna end with a cliffhanger like Empire Strikes Back or Matrix: Reloaded??? That would be awesome. Then have Galactus come back in the next film with a group of Heralds. :)

I'd rather they tie up everything is this film than waiting until FF3 to deal with Galactus.

They're obviously gonna deal with Galactus in this film but probably really reveal him in the next one. Or so it seems.

Thats what i'd rather not see happen.

I got my subscription copy today and there really isn't that much new to report in the magazine. There is this slightly different picture of the Surfer

SciFiSurfer.jpg

The only think I read in the article that I had not seen mentioned anywhere else is mention of

"... Doctor Doom's massive laboratory"
"...The Silver Surfer smashing though the Great Wall of China"
"... Egypts Pyramids buried under snow"

Jessica Alba says.."We're all very much a family. We all live together. We're getting married --- that's sort of the centerpiece for my character in this movie...It's all about the wedding. She's sort of Bridezilla, in the best way. You know, she's stressed."

Wow! Thanks for posting, I am liking all of the stuff in the spoiler tags :D

I picked up the Wizard Spring/Summer Mega Movie issue yesterday and if you're looking for any exclusive photos, there's nothing here we haven't already seen. They also have the Silver Surfer/Chysler Building picture I have posted up above and the only picture of Doom is the same one we've seen with Julian and Michael. They give that photo bigger play by making it a two page spread, Michael on one whole page and Julian on another. There's the Fantastic car publicity photo, Tim with Stan Lee at the wedding scene, the FF walking together in the new Baxter building, etc.

There is however, this intriguing reference...

"For those who think Doom may fall out of the limelight in "Rise of the Silver Surfer" because of shinier elements like the Silver Surfer, you'd better watch your mouth before Doom tosses you in his dungeon (which makes an appearance in the film. Natch!). Story says the statement couldn't be further from the truth."

Where there's a dungeon there must be a castle. I wish they would at least release a picture of Castle Doom.

Thanks for the updates guys!

I felt that they should show Doom in Latveria in this movie and it looks like it will happen. If it's in his castle even better.

New casting revealed.....

Delicious indulgence
Dessert inspired body products pack zero calories
Mashiah Vaughn is no stranger to the spotlight: her modelling clients include Victoria’s Secret, Gap, Ralph Lauren, and Club Monaco, and she has graced the big and small screens in such productions as Fantastic Four 2, Get Carter, Smallville, and Supernatural. Now she is being recognized for something completely different. Her dessert-inspired Open Sundaes Bath & Body Treats has exploded from being a basement run gift service to an impressive force with a 6,000—square foot development laboratory in the works, three stand alone stores, a gift shop, a couple of kiosks including a new location in Chinook Centre, and fifteen outlets including Land & Sea in TD Square—and there is interest in creating stores from Las Vegas to Pakistan, Los Angeles to China, India to Paris.

These delicious products arose as an answer to a problem Vaughn experienced. She would work seventeen hour days and crave a way to pamper herself in hotel rooms before the next busy day began. She developed a line of stress relieving products for people who knew the importance of taking care of themselves, even on the run. She used trade secrets she learned while modelling and acting—like using hair powder to keep hair refreshed or using yellow...
