Major Blockbusters/ films by year

Yeah, i will announce the real blockbusters soon, this is just the list of big budgeted Studio films, almost like a to-watch list if you will. A good example is John Carter, which was a blockbuster at heart but in it's release it didn't make the cut.

After i'm done though some years i'll revisit the 2010s period and make the list a little shorter. And also add the major successes that weren't that big budgeted.

2009 now, the year that once again changed the industry by putting 3D into the mainstream and beating records.

It probably starts with Jaws.
Then Star Wars.
Then Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Then maybe E.T.?
Close Encounters.
Batman.
T2: Judgment Day.
Jurassic Park.
Independence Day.
Where is Back To The Future? And shouldn't Close Encounters be next to Star Wars, or do you think is came out between E.T. and Batman?

To be a real blockbuster today, in terms of ticket sales, I think a movie today should make at least $450 million domestically. Back to the Future made around $210 million in 1985. Adjusted for inflation that's around $480 million. And considering a lot of movies can get a boost from more expensive 3D and IMAX-tickets today, then maybe a movie today should make at least $500 million domestically to be considered a true blockbuster in America, if a $200 million gross in the 80's was considered a blockbuster success

That's way too high, IMO. What adjusting for inflation never takes into account is all the extra variables that separate old movies from new ones. I agree with the 300M DOM yardstick. That's still a high bar to reach and usually less than 5 films per year get there. That's 5 out of hundreds.

But there are still far more movies making $300 million today than $200 million in the 80's. While $300 million still might look impressive on the paper I personally feel these movies have become too common to feel like they are a rare, special event like a true blockbuster should be. But, okay, many movies that makes $300 million domestically today usually makes a lot more than that internationally, so on a worldwide level they can often be considered a blockbuster, I suppose

I don't think rarity is a necessary qualification.

Ok, for the true blockbusters i'll consider those that did in least 300 million domestically or broke the billion mark internationally. Inflation doesn't allways exactly help, nowadays they invest a lot more money than they used to back in the day, up for inflation Jaws would only cost 30-40 million dollars, which today isn't the money they usually invest in "big Budget" films.

I don't think it should matter how much a movie cost to make as long as it made at least $300-$350 domestically or $1 billion internationally. Say for 2008, it should be the Dark Knight, Iron Man and Indiana Jones.

But again, this should only be for movies in the past 10-13 years. I think as you go back further, you have to lower the standards.

Also, older movies like Star Wars that made over $300 domestically, yet Boxofficemojo doesn't seem to have any foreign numbers. But obviously Star Wars is the quintessential definition of a blockbuster.

Well, usually when a studio wastes a lot of money in a film they expect it to be a major success, However they used to not waste as much money on films, i used the Jaws example because while it wasn't a Cleópatra type of record, it wasn't exactly a small film either, it was probably expected to be a success, just not as much as they though it would.

This list is about big budgeted films as much as it is about blockbusters, i will soon start to cut it down once i reach around 1975, since nowadays a big budget film has to be considered to cost in least 125 million, but in 2003 i think it would be around 75 million.

For now i will keep putting the ones that cost in least 50 million and star decreasing the number as we go through the 90s

You do realize that there's only been 7 movies ever to gross over $450 million domestically right? Up it to $500 million and you're down to 4, and one of those was released 15 years ago.

So? True blockbusters are more rare today because there are more movies released every year, meaning there's more competition. It's more difficult for movies to really stand out today.

It's actually the oposite, blockbusters used to be very rare, nowadays we have in least one every year, the only difference is that now with so many big budget films like this it's more rare to get people to stay talking about them.

Even by decreasing the budget limitations for what we could consider big budget films back during those days it seems like there was a visible increase in big films being made from the 2000s on. And due to less films like that it seems like there weren't as many major failures of the likes of The Lone Ranger, but on the other side records are broken more frequently nowadays.

Actually, in the early to mid 80s it seems like there were many big budgeted fantasy films, probably inspired by the success of Star Wars, However most of them were flops or bombs, no wonder the rest of the 80s and early 90s had so few big budgeted productions.

I'm not sure if records are broken more frequently these days. Take opening weekend records for example. The only years that saw a new record more than once were 1978 and 1989. In both of those years three movies were able to set a new record, although back in those days it was rarely the kind of big jump we see today.

Single years maybe, but when you take it into account with the other years of their respective decades records weren't broken as frequently. And nowadays we have multiple big budgeted productions that get even more money than they used to back in the day, even when taking inflation into account.

Adjusted for inflation studios also invest much more money in their films now, and seems like more people go to the cinemas too, just the way it is, and if things keep going at this pace in least 1 film will break the billion mark per year.
