I'm guessing this is the Green Knight project Malick was working on before?

(Los Angeles, CA) November 2, 2011 – FilmNation Entertainment is continuing their relationship with acclaimed director Terrence Malick (The Tree of Life, The Thin Red Line) and handling international sales and distribution on his next two films.

LAWLESS will star Ryan Gosling (Drive, The Ides of March) and boasts a supporting cast that includes Academy Award Winners Christian Bale (The Dark Knight, The Flowers of War), Cate Blanchett (The Hobbit, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) plus Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Social Network) and Haley Bennett (Marley & Me, The Haunting of Molly Hartley). The second film, KNIGHT OF CUPS, will star Christian Bale with a supporting cast including Cate Blanchett and Isabel Lucas (Immortals, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen). Both films are currently in pre-production and will shoot back-to-back in 2012. Glen Basner, CEO of FilmNation Entertainment commented: “FilmNation couldn’t be happier to continue to act as Terrence’s international sales agency. Terrence is a brilliant filmmaker and an enormous draw for talent and filmmakers alike. We look forward to robust sales at AFM on both of these films.”

“Glen Basner and the entire FilmNation team continue to be excellent partners. We are thrilled to be working with them again to bring these extraordinary projects to audiences around the world”, commented producers Sarah Green and Nicolas Gonda.

This film is totally a left-field surprise. I didn't expect that Malick to announce another project besides Lawless. He's on a ****ing roll, keep it up, I'll say.

Yeah this totally came out of nowhere. We were already joking at how insane that Malick was doing the other movie and now this? :funny: I'm stoked that Bale and Blanchett are both on this and Lawless.

It turns out that Knight of Cups is a tarot card so go figure what this movie could be:

The Knight of Cups is seen as a young knight, riding along on his white horse, holding a cup as if he is a messenger of some type. Unlike the Knight of Wands or the Knight of Swords, the Knight of Cups is not charging along but rather his horse moves slowly forward, giving an impression of calmness and peace. The horse represents power, energy, and drive, and of course the colour white is a symbol of purity, spirituality, and light. The Knight wears a cloak covered with images of fish, the symbol of the spirit, consciousness and creativity. His helmet and feet are winged, a symbol of an active and creative imagination.

Okay, this made my f***ing day, screw it, week. Other than his two upcoming films I'm excited for, along came a new film from Malick and I'm not sure if I can take this news in. I'm just excited at the prospect of seeing f***ing three new Terrence Malick films.

So the film that was shooting (or test-shooting) at Austin City Limits was Lawless? At least we know some more of the principals --- Rooney Mara, Ryan Gosling and Cate Blanchett....and I'm still assuming it has something to do with the modern music scene.

Knight of Cups, we don't know *anything* about other than Bale, Blanchett, and Lucas, right? I'm wondering if the title will be metaphorical, or literal...I'm wondering if this one is going to be some sort of medieval period piece.

This is great news. Who was the actress with Bale at Austin City Limits?

Correct.

When I first saw the title, I immediately thought that it might be the Gawain and the Green Knight project that he was developing before. But as it turns out, Knight of Cups is actually a tarot card with some interesting meaning so I don't know anymore. :funny:

It looks like Bale's 2012 is going to be the year of the Malick. 2 movies back to back? Damn.

Haley Bennett. And that one's for Lawless.

Awesome.

I don't know what I'm more excited about. Ryan Gosling and Rooney Mara working with Malick or so much Bale.

The fact that we are already talking about the 4th Mallick movies since The Tree of Life, is more surrealistic than The Tree of Life.

Interesting....I could see Knight of Cups very well being the Gawain story. Plus, the "cup" could easily reference the Grail, that favorite questing target of the Knights of Camelot. (Insert Monty Python joke here.)

Oh, man, I'm stoked. Three more Mallick films? Filming back to back is indeed interesting. And Gosling and Bale in the same together makes me excited.

From Malick's production designer:

http://blogs.indiewire.com/thompsononhollywood/jack-fisk-climbs-the-tree-of-life

"Terry's found a way of working that's much more spontaneous and I've never seen him so happy making films. And we're about to start another one in June, this time in Los Angeles, followed by another one, so he's not only more excited and passionate about working but he's doing it more often."

If 'Lawless' is going first then this will be shot late 2012.

Micheal Sheen was talking about how he visited his girlfriend Rachel McAdams on the set of this film and ended up with Malick asking him to play Ben Affleck's characters boss.

Natalie Portman joins the cast. This will shoot first (Summer) before Lawless (Fall).

Natalie Portman Sets First Post-Oscar Roles, Back To Back Terrence Malick Films: Berlin

EXCLUSIVE: Natalie Portman has committed to her first two movie roles since winning the Best Actress Oscar for Black Swan and taking maternity leave. Portman is joining the casts of the Terrence Malick films Knight Of The Cups, and Lawless. Portman will join Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett and Isabel Lucas in Knight of the Cups, which shoots this summer. She will follow by starring with Ryan Gosling, Bale, Blanchett, Rooney Mara and Haley Bennett in Lawless, the film Malick shoots in the fall. It will be Portman’s first time working with Malick, whose The Tree of Life won the Palme d’Or at Cannes and is nominated for Best Picture and Best Director Oscars.

The addition of Portman certainly will create some buzz for both Malick films when the wheeling and dealing begins at EFM in Berlin tomorrow. FilmNation is selling international territories and CAA reps both films for domestic rights. The market hasn’t even started and Deadline has broken stories that Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg lead the package for the Emmett/Furla Films and Universal co-financed 2 Guns; that Joseph Gordon-Levitt will make his directing debut on a comedy he’ll star in with Scarlett Johansson for IM Global; and that The Devil Inside followup WER will be sold by Sierra/Affinity, with FilmDistrict now an equity player in the film with Incentive Filmed Entertainment. All those films will have action in Berlin and it is looking like there will be a lot of good product. My colleague Nancy Tartaglione will be on the ground in Berlin and Deadline will be all over the market. Portman is repped by CAA and Brillstein Entertainment Partners.

Great addition, i've wanted to see Natalie work with Christian for a while now :woot:

Whoa....wonder what this means for Portman in Thor 2. She was announced for it, but apparently had a falling out with Marvel Studios when they cut Patty Jenkins as the director....this could spell trouble for Thor 2....
