BREAKING: CHRISTIAN BALE CAST IN NEW TERRENCE MALICK PROJECT

Well, now. Terrence Malick may have been out of the public eye for the lengthy gap between The New World and The Tree Of Life but he clearly was keeping busy. A notorious perfectionist seemingly as well known for the lengthy gaps between his films as for his films themselves, Malick has been on a tear lately and the rapid pace of new projects is not slowing down any time soon.

After directing only four feature films between 1973 and 2010, Malick may very well end up doubling his total career output in 2011, 2012 and 2013 alone.

When Malick returned to the big screen with his Cannes-winning The Tree Of Life fans were already buzzing about his as-yet untitled other new movie, one already shot and in post-production starring Ben Affleck, Jessica Chastain, Rachel McAdams and Rachel Weisz. Well, that one's coming out in 2012 and he's got another already gearing up to shoot.

Twitch has learned that Malick has just cast Christian Bale to take the lead in another as-yet untitled project due to shoot in early 2012. Malick and Bale's interest in one another is already a matter of public record - Bale was initially attached to the project currently in post and was later replaced by Affleck and the two worked together previously on The New World - so while the fact that Malick already has another project gearing up comes as a surprise the fact that he would look to Bale for the lead does not.

Our sources also tell us that this will be a much smaller cast than the project Malick currently has in post, the story driven by a pair of dominant leads, one male and one female. Word is Malick is currently making a decision between a quartet of young actresses - Rooney Mara, Haley Bennet, Clemence Poesy and Mia Wasikowska - for the female lead. The presence of producer Sarah Green on the project means this may be the previously rumored Voyage Of Time, but given that Voyage is already a known title and this has gone out as untitled means they are most likely two separate projects.

Wow, only four feature films in that length of time? What does the guy do to make a living?

I knew that Malick was planning to shoot his seventh film soon, but that seems far-away knowing how he works. But reading that he may be shooting it next year, the same year his romantic drama film is apparently coming out, makes me pleased as punch.

I can't get enough of Malick, so count me in.

Yes! Another new project from Malick. His filmography is incredible (yes I liked The New World as well) and I've just watched The Tree of Life a few days ago and it floored me, I was just speechless, it's an incredible experience just watching that film, magnifico.

I was bummed when Bale had to dropped out from his upcoming film but I'm happy he has the chance to collaborate with Malick once again. I like lately that Malick has been doing a project and lining a few more too instead of waiting a few to many years for one, I guess his creativity has just flow better, which is good. Can't wait to hear more about this.

Hopefully there will be more info on this one soon.

Over at IMDB they are speculating that this might be the Jerry Lee Lewis biopic that Malick was working on with Brad Pitt and Natalie Portman previously attached to star.

Haley Bennett Set To Star In Terrence Malick's Next Film

Terrence Malick's demonstrated taste for unknown female leads has lifted the careers of Sissy Spacek and Jessica Chastain, and now comes Haley Bennett, who will join Malick's untitled project with Christian Bale.

Malick is writing and directing the project, expected to shoot next summer. Sarah Green and Nicholas Gonda are producing the film and, as is customary with the director, story details have not been revealed.

Bennett had been one of several actresses vying for the role, including Rooney Mara and Mia Wasikowska.

Neither WME, which reps Bennett, nor the producers had comment on her casting.

Malick is currently in post-production on his upcoming untitled film starring Ben Affleck, set for a 2012 release. Though that cast includes well-knowns Rachel McAdams and Rachel Weisz, auteur's previous projects have featured newcomers like Q'orianka Kilcher ("The New World"), Chastain ("Tree of Life") and Spaceck ("Badlands).

Bennett's highest profile roles were a supporting turn in "Marley & Me" and as Molly Hartley in the 2008 film "The Haunting of Molly Hartley." She's currently working on the pilot "Outlaw Country" for FX.

She is repped by WME and The Schiff Company.

With this casting news means that the project is moving forward, and I couldn't be more happier. I haven't see Bennett in any movie but, if the casting of Spacek and Chastain is any indication, I'm sure she will do just fine.

The female roles in Malick's films are mostly played by unknown actresses so I'm not surprised he went with her. I'm very curious to know the plot but that could take awhile.

It looks like Variety spoke too soon, as they now report that another actor could snag the role.

Variety reported earlier Thursday that Hayley Bennett was the one, but sources now say another candidate could close the deal.

Clemence Poesy was another in the mix that, despite Malick's affinity for lesser-known female leads, included Rooney Mara and Mia Wasikowska.

Regardless of which actors it will end up being, I'm sure they're eager to get the part and -I apologize if this sounds pretentious (:p)- the privilege of being in a Terrence Malick film.

EDIT: Take this with a grain of salt but according to Nicolas Winding Refn, Ryan Gosling has a small part in Malick's next film, which he now comments on:
We asked Gosling about the possibility, but were met with a downcast glance and a smile. “Uh, I caaaaan’t… comment,” he said—about as much as we were expecting; the mysterious filmmaker’s work is always kept tight under wraps until its debut. “A chatty cathy that one,” joked Gosling in regards to Malick, but we’ll take his coy response as a positive sign…

I for one would love to see Gosling act under the direction by Malick, so I hope it's true.

Ryan Gosling might be in this movie as well. Unless he's talking about yet another Malick film.

^Sorry, I didn't see your post kvz5.

Anyway, if Gosling work with Malick, the awesomeness would be to much for me to handle, as I've never imagine, in my short life, both of them working together. :woot:

They filmed something at the Austin City Limits:

Interesting. I wonder if they're filming test footage or if Bale is researching on the character for the JLL project, which I'm starting to think this secretive project is about.

My guess is he's researching for the character and they're filming him for BTS stuff?

Signs are definitely pointing to this being the JLL project but there are also rumors that it's a "present day story set in Austin" so maybe he's playing a modern day rocker but not JLL? It's pretty interesting too that the female lead they got has some singing experience so more and more signs are pointing to this movie having to do with music.

And oh, they're back for Day 2. Bale was being filmed by Malick while watching and talking with the bands performing. All these sudden Malick pics are freaking me out! It's like somebody invaded his body! :hehe:

I was thinking it might be the JLL project, because he wrote an unused (and dark) draft for the 1989 movie Great Balls of Fire!, which was a bio-pic on JLL. But of course, like you said, it could be about an entirely different character in a contemporary setting.

I'm with you on the pics of Malick. It feels so weird seeing pics of him emerging from nowhere, as he's incredibly elusive. :woot:

It looks like Haley got the role. Malick with Haley Bennett:

Seeing pics with Bale, that's cool but when I noticed that Malick is there too, I was like :wow:

Malick tackling a project something to do with music, this will be interesting. If it's set in the past or it's contemporary, doesn't matter to me since it'll be day one for me anyway.

Definitely seeing the Malick pics all over ACL is something else. He's like a changed man. :hehe:

Isn't it a super rare thing for Malick to even be photographed?

It's very rare to have a proper photo taken of him. So yes, this is kind of a big deal. :funny:

Strongly doubt this has anything to do with Jerry Lee Lewis. Unless Malick's doing some bizarre anachronistic take on Jerry in modern times, there's no reason for him to film Bale in modern clothing on a modern stage in front of modern audiences, for a biopic about a 50s-era rock-and-roll piano player.

But if it's a movie about modern alt rock and/or alt country, which makes sense for the ACL venue, *definitely* count me in. I'll be keeping a closer eye on this one.

I think this just may be early test footage or something similar until the actual production starts.
