POLICE and Army troopers have arrested three suspected Abu Sayyaf terrorists carrying explosives and about to board a Manila-bound ship in Maguindanao, an official said yesterday.

“Two improvised explosive devices were recovered from them, and they were about to board the Super Ferry to stage bombings,” said Lt. Col. Julieto Ando, spokesman of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division.

Authorities did not name the suspects, who were arrested around 2 p.m. at Polloc Port in Parang town on Sunday.

“Charges of illegal possession of explosives were filed against the suspects,” Ando said.

Earlier, police warned that terrorists could carry out bombings to mark the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks in the United States.

The warning came following reports that two terrorists with links to the Al Qaida network had arrived in Manila to carry out attacks.

But police in Metro Manila denied any terror threats and doubted the reports about them.

“We have yet to confirm such reports,” Metro Manila Police Chief Reynaldo Varilla said.

“I don’t know where the information came from,” he said.

He said police “remain vigilant and alert” in Metro Manila “with or without” threats” from the Abu Sayyaf or any other groups.

The Abu Sayyaf is listed as a terrorist group by the United States and the European Union. It has been blamed for a spate of bombings, kidnappings, and attacks on security forces.

In February 2004 a blast ripped through a Super Ferry vessel at sea that left 116 people dead. It was later attributed to Muslim terrorists belonging to the shadowy Rajah Solaiman Movement

Anyone who justifies an act under the name of God in order to kill innocent people are hypocrites and there actions have no justification.

Fair enough. What do you put the rise in this sort of behaviour from Muslims down to?
