Terrorism attack averted in Toronto Canada

Apparently their plan was to take hostages at the parliament building and behead the prime minister on live television. Then after said decapitation they were going to blow the whole shebang up.

I'm not afraid personally, but I hope the Islamic community in Canada realizes that they live in the most generous society on the planet and Canadians are more than willing to help them with this situation, but also that Canadians will not be patient forever and will take care of business if they have to.

Unless your nephew is on the other side. In which, i assume that this canadian, the one i have quoted, will be under the kitchen table whimpering.

Not at all. Like I said, it wasn't cowardice that caused me to not act. It was my mind on the bigger picture.

I could see where bombing the power plants might have some affect, since they are linked to the States.

Beheading the Prime Minister makes NO sense at all, nor does bombing the CN Tower. After that's done nothing would really change in the big scheme of things. We're already pretty paranoid about security.

I won't mention the targets I would pick (because I don't want to give folks ideas). However, they should treat these folks like any other criminals, they do have a right to speak to their lawyer(s) in private.

This is obviously a bit of Bush Propaganda.

Canadians have never won anything.

They're better then the French, who pretty much lost everything

Wait a sec...

You mean to tell me that terrorist hate more than just America?
NO WAY! Not according to the news I've seen anyway.

Sad story actually. I don't mind Canada all that much. I mean I've donated a lot of money to them via the casino and strip clubs.

What about the war of 1812, we kicked the US's ass and burned down the white house!

Bombing the CN tower is not for the death count, it's because its a national symbol. If a terrorist was to destroy the statue of Liberty, not many people woul die, but it's an act of symbolism. Nonetheless, I'm glad we caught them, and we didn't have to resort to illegal wiretapping.

Well there is no logical reason to attack Canada, but these terrorists are not the most logical people around. I mean for God's sakes, fundamentalists muslims started riots that killed people over cartoons in a dinky Danish newspaper, not very rational.

A civilian court cannot adequately deal with terrorists because if you have even a few dozen trials, the normal procedural delays would guarentee that the whole court system would be bogged down.

A military court is the only real place to deal with this.

Vimy Ridge in WWI.

Well, I heartily applaud the Canadians for defeating this plot, it sounds like it could have been disastrous.

But why Canada? And why such a dramatic plot? I know Canada is a first-world country with considerable economic and political power with strong allies (the US and NATO countries among them), but Canada hasn't been involved with the Islamic world nearly as much as the US or its Coalition of the Willing. The UK was America's strongest partner and staunchest supporter of the Iraq war, and all that happened to them was the bombings of several busses and a couple of trains. Low casualties, and the city of London was able to shrug it off quickly. That's nothing compared to the beheading of the Prime Minister. Why would this cell create such an over blown plot to attack Canada of all nations?

The reason:
Canada is not a Muslim nation.

You see it doesn't matter if Canada has troops in Iraq or not. If they are against or for Bush. Or if they are for against the way the US handled 9/11.

Plain and simple the terrorist do NOT care.

Osama bin-Laden named Canada one of five so-called Christian nations that should be targeted for acts of terror.

That's the reason right there.

I actually think this group is a lot less competent than we're giving them credit for. They probably chose Canada because it was where they lived. It was easy and it was stupid but I don't think they cared.

Yes, people don't understand there is no such thing as appeasement to terrorists.

People can say that Canada is the most liberal of nations.

However to a terrorist this is an anathema, they are Westeners and are therefore an enemy.

However many people fail to realize that no matter how nice or good you are the rabid dog will still attack you.

We have troops in Afghanistan that they would've wanted removed; hence the hostages. While Canada's population is over 31 million, only Chicago, LA, NYC and Mexico City have bigger populations than Toronto. It would've killed the summer tourism season for the city. Osama bin Laden listed: America, UK, Spain, Austrailia and Canada as Christian nations that should be targeted. Where have the last bunch of terrorist attacks occured? If it can happen to young men in Canada, America will have their own home grown terrorists making the news (for good or bad reasons).

Also, the security for Harper is/was probably less tight compared to the other nations when it comes to leaders. They showed a clip of a middle aged male protestor who managed to get right next to ex-Prime Minister Mulroney in the House of Commons. He waved a small American flag before being grabbed and taken away from security. Prime Minister Chretien even had a cream pie thrown at his face from a protestor. I believe it was at Parliament or a pancake breakfast. Taking over the CBC to broadcast their demands and killing hostages would be more slap in the face; since the CBC is part of the government and not a private company like CTV or Global.

Does that mean that the terrorists are going to attack Australia next? They were successful in the US, UK, and Spain. Are they going to try something in Canada again?

Wait a minute. Canadians averted an attack without dropping bombs, occupying entire nations and killing thousands of their own and others? Impossible.

Don't you find it interesting though that they don't attack other nations, are tolerant of the muslim religion and have been against US policies but were still a target.

Everyone's a target with criminals. It's not about distancing yourself and playing nice with bad guys, it's about getting the bad guys and only the bad guys.
