Super Mario Mario Kart Wii Online

Mario Kart Wii Features Text Chat
Nintendo of Europe confirms the long-rumored communication option.
by Matt Casamassina

February 26, 2008 - Nintendo fans still hoping that the arrival of Mario Kart Wii will herald the beginning of voice chat support on the company's home console will have to put those hopes on hold for a while. The publisher's European subsidiary confirmed in an official Mario Kart Wii posting that players will only be able to communicate with each other via text chat, and not during matches.

"You can create rooms for friends to join and even text chat while you're waiting for other racers," Nintendo of Europe revealed.

Very likely, Mario Kart Wii will support a USB keyboard to communicate -- most of the Wii Channels do this already -- but we expect the majority of gamers will use a good old-fashioned Wii remote to input messages, such as "Bozon, you suck!' and "Craig, you're terrible!" or even, "How the hell is Casamassina so damned good at this game?" (The latter message will probably take some time using the Wii remote, but the importance of the statement should not be ignored.)

Couldn't do this with Brawl after all the delays?

Well voice chat would be great (though there have been countless times while my brother plays 360 online and can hear the voices of those who clearly should be sterilized, but if you're chatting with people you know its great.), text chat is a start.

I'd rather have the text than voice. Anonymous voices bug the hell out of me. With text they have to work to type up stupid ****, then find it's not worth the effort.

Whats Brawl text system like ? & screw the Wii remote for these games :o I am very curious to see what Brawls online system is like & how you invite friends & stuff

There is no text or voice chat, I know that. You'd have to jump into the Brawl thread or search video game news sites about what its like.

This game looks UGLY as hell! This looks more like Mario Kart 64 V2. Take a look at what they can do in Brawl, why would this be different.

Sure, Europe finally gets a Mario Kart game earlier than America / Japan... but WHAT do we get is.... disappointing!

Mario Kart Wii Wheels also sold separately
Written by: Spencer on February 27th, 2008 @ 9:56 am

If you need additional Nintendo branded Mario Kart Wii steering wheels you won’t have to buy shell out for another copy of Mario Kart Wii. Nintendo plans on selling extra Wii Wheels on April 11, the same day Mario Kart Wii debuts in Japan. Each extra plastic steering wheel runs for 1200 yen ($11). Of course, Nintendo’s Wii Wheel isn’t required to play Mario Kart Wii. Ubisoft’s wheel should work fine and so should a standalone controller.

They'll probably sell it for $11.99. About half the price of the Ubisoft wheel.

Update
In our original article, we speculated that players might be able to use a USB keyboard or at the very least the Wii remote to enter customized text messages. Not so, according to a rep for Nintendo of America, who contacted us today to clarify. Apparently, gamers will only be able to select from a pre-determined number of phrases that can be sent along as rudimentary texts before matches. Nintendo is clearly playing it safe.

Is "WTF" or "Lets go get those mother****ers" going to be a phrase, cause that's what I'm thinking right now.

This looks so Nintendo DS'ish :csad: Even 64 looked better!

Whats up with the quality? Take a look at Brawl and compare it with this... its ridicilous.

Oh I guess I'll

You're ridiculous. Did you not see the trailer on the previous page?

Looks better than the Gamecube and if you don't want to play a fun game then don't.

i have to agree with you here, the picture quality looks horrible

but thank god in the trailers it looks nothing like this

How do you know its a fun game? Sure, all of the other Kart Games were enjoyable and funny ... but im talking about the PICTURE Quality, not the GAME Quality cause im pretty damn sure the game is absolutely fun to play.

The pictures, on the other hand, look horrible to say the least. And how can you even compare a trailer thats 1/10th the size compared to that picture we got?

Shame, cause the Wii can showcase some amazing stuff. I just wished the graphics were on par with the graphics in Brawl.

Telekinetic seems to disagree with you on the trailer. A picture is a picture. Gameplay footage is what matters. And who cares? 64 looks like crap but it sill fun to play if you dust of the N64.

Now, compare that, to THIS :

Get my point?

Its just a bad screenshot, if one looks good and one looks bad and if you're disappointed then don't play.

Well you'll have the chance to play the game in about a month and you can tell us if it is ugly as hell, as you said.

Nintendo UK said:
Going global with Mario Kart Wii
04/03/2008
With Mario Kart Wii’s launch date of 11 April fast approaching, Wii owners are gearing up for a racing experience unrivalled by any other in the kart racing series. While the game introduces a slew of new features across the board, perhaps most eagerly awaited are its online options, which take the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection action found in Mario Kart DS to a whole new level.

In Mario Kart Wii you can go online via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection by yourself or together with a friend playing on the same Wii console, and let the games begin! You can directly jump into online races with random players Worldwide, or opt for Continental if you prefer a challenge closer to home.

Then you will be placed in a new group of people looking for a match, or you will join an existing group. When the latter happens you will become a spectator of that group’s race currently in progress, as you wait for your turn to hit the track. With up to 12 players being able to battle or race on the circuits of the Mushroom Kingdom simultaneously, Mario Kart Wii is set to provide the biggest challenge in the series to date!

After swapping Friend Codes with other players, you will also be able to see how many of your mates are online, and choose to Create a Room or select Join Friend to gather in a room with your friends before you start your engines.

Once inside a room, the globe familiar from the Forecast Channel will highlight the location of all players present. This is where you can text chat with your friends by making a selection from dozens of predefined messages, letting you suggest exactly which kind of race you want to play: from Battle to Grand Prix, and from Team play to your circuit of choice. The Host then decides the race settings, but the track selection is based on the votes of all players combined.

Mario Kart Wii also allows you to install the Mario Kart Channel on your Wii console. This Channel lets you check up on a host of options without the need of inserting the Mario Kart Wii disc into your system.

The Ranking option lets you see your statistics for each track and compare your results to those of your Friends and other players worldwide, represented by their Miis. You’ll have the option of racing against the Ghosts of the best players, or improving your results gradually by taking on the Ghosts of rivals whose times are only slightly better than yours. Players can choose whether they want to share their Time Trial Ghosts with the rest of the world, allowing you to match your skills against the cream of the crop whenever you want.

Another all-new feature of this Channel are the Competitions, where Nintendo will on a regular basis invite players to speedy challenges similar to the Missions of Mario Kart DS. The Channel also allows you to check your ranking in running Competitions as well as Time Trials. You can also go here to register Friends and see if any of them are currently online.

There’s much more Mario Kart Wii to come, so stay tuned to the site for further updates!

Mario Kart Wii will be in shops 11 April, only on Wii.

Dont worry Slinger. I give every Nintendo game a chance. I'm just disappointed by how it looks, thats all :-)

I'm sure Mario Kart Wii has a superb gameplay. I'll keep you guys informed and post my review once the game is safely in my Wii :-)

For those in Australia, Mario Kart Wii comes out two weeks after the European release. Still no date yet for North America.

Does anyone else feel like this is a bad release time for this game? It's been soooo underhyped. Plus, we don't even have a confirmed name for it yet: Mario Kart Wii? That's it?

This just seems like bad marketing... Reggie, what are you doing?! :(

What would you call it?

Anyone in Europe notice any hype?

Once the Brawl hype dies it will all be for Wii Fit, Wii Ware and Mario Kart Wii for the next 3.5 months in North America.

Just like Super Mario Kart for the Super Nintendo, Mario Kart 64 for the Nintendo 64, and Mario Kart DS for the Nintendo DS, the name for the most recent entry of the Mario Kart series is indeed...Mario Kart Wii.

MKWiiBoxart.jpg

Nintendo is also developing the Mario Kart Channel for the Wii menu for rankings and competitions.

Personally I like the name. Excluding Mario Kart: Double Dash, it goes along with all the other games in the series and it's simple, Mario Kart for the Wii.

The game looks great imo and is gonna be a whole ot of fun!
