Superman Returns Mark Millar's thoughts on the movie . . .

JBElliott said:
For what it's worth, this is what Mark Millar wrote over on his forum about SR:

As for Superman Returns. Well, I have to say...

...I'm a little worried.

Any regular poster here knows how much I dig Superman. Superman is the reason I started reading comics and the reason I wanted to write them too. I have Christopher Reeve's cape hanging in my hall and Frisky the cat stuffed and sitting on top of our dining room piano. I have also waited for nineteen years for Superman to be back on the big screen. I almost wept like a baby when I heard that Bryan was doing this flick after so many scares with Burton, Cage, killer polar bears and scripts based on a 1990s comic-book marketing stunt.

So why am I worried? I dunno. It's my spider-sense. It's just tingling. I liked the first trailer a lot, but that second trailer... It just seemed to lack any moments. There was a lot of everyone except Superman there and there wasn't a single moment that had my hair standing on end as I would have expected. Only a fool judges a movie based on a trailer, but there only needed to be one money shot-- one big moment-- to get me excited and what should have been that moment in the final third of the trailer is this horrible, jarring scene where the needle almost seems to jump and we get Spacey camping it up. Also, there are two big action sequences in this movie; a series of rescues by Superman in the middle and Superman saving people from a huge Earthquake towards the end. I'm not saying he needs to hit somebody, but... with today's special effects and what's expected from a superhero movie I think he DOES really need to hit somebody in the third act. It's what makes Spidey satisfying and Hulk unsatisfying. Superman isn't about his relationship with Lois Lane and their kid. It's about Superman doing 'cool ****' and I worry he's not going to be doing enough in this novie.

I thought Batman Begins would do 800 million and it did 400. I realize this is because the movie, though brilliant, lacked Batman. Similarly, Spidey 2 was a superior movie to Spidey 1, but the first flick had Spidey every eight minutes or so and kids watched it continuously. Kids don't want Spidey 2 or Batman Begins over and over and my worry is that Superman is going to suffer from the same problem. Also, it seems like Superman 5. It seems like the CAPSTONE to a franchise as opposed to a new foundation a quarter of a century after the first movie. Heroes get the girl and have a kid at the END of their adventures. Doing this right at the beginning just feels off and is problematic for sequels. Imagine 'BOND IS BACK... AND THIS TIME HE'S BROUGHT HIS WIFE AND KID' and you'll see what I mean. Incredibles is one of my top 5 movies ever, but the gag there is that it's a family of superheroes. That's not what makes Superman cool. It's a great ending to the franchise, but an unfortunate beginning.

Anyway, I pray I'm wrong because I want to love this more than any of you. I'll open a vein if Superman isn't as big as Titanic, but a Superman movie that starts with Krypton, goes to Smallville, has Clark going to the big city, has Superman saving Lois from a crashing plane, has Superman doing a series of rescues, has Luthor stealing Kryptonite, poisoning Superman and then setting off a huge earthquake seems kind of familiar and oddly pointless. It seems like Superman The Movie PLUS A KID.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but in terms of moments and coolness and all the things little kids wants to see on the screen I have a weird feeling that X3 might be the one that delivers this Summer.

MM
I kinda feel the same way; hearing Marlon Brando's narrations over John Williams' score just felt like, "They've had 20 years & this is all they could come up with?"

You guys are still in this debate over MM? I don`t give a **** about what he says for 3 reasons:

1)He didnt see the movie. It`s foolish to rate a movie we havent seen.
2)I like what Singer`s doing and i trust him. MM doesnt. Big deal. I`ll like the movie and he wont.
3)I don`t give a **** about MM.

:D

He's just saying he's skeptical. He didn't say he doesn't like the movie.

What a bunch of hilarious replies. I guess it's been agreed upon that one can't judge SR before seeing it, unless that judgement is positive. ;)

More fuel for the fire as it were: the repsonse of Rob Liefeld to Millar's post on his forum:

Mark,

Wow, I completely agree with your assessment of both movies. My boys (4 and 6) watch the X-trailer and they jump out of their seats and start acting like Wolverine. I get all amped up and show them the Superman trailer and they watch it and look at me like I'm crazy. Their first question is " Who does he fight?"

Even my wife after watching the trailer in the theatre turned and said " Is that it?" It's not that these people are my family, they are typical of the people necessary nedded to make Superman a big hit.

I felt let down by the new Superman trailer as well, I want this to be the biggest movie ever, I love the original as much as anyone. A trailer's purpose is to stoke the fire, build hype, you gotta believe the movie company is trying to pick the most exciting, amazing shots possible in order to accomplish the hype. And what I get is Superman saving a plane and deflecting bullets? I'm hoping there's more behind the curtain, I want desperately to get my kids psyched for this as well.

BTW, nice avatar McGee. Funny stuff.

In response to those who think that Millar doesn't know what would make a good superhero movie, I suggest you read "The Ultimates" which is consistently called "cinematic" and one of the best comics being published today. It has a good balance of character and plot development and more the enough action. That's most probably the 'cool ****' Millar is talking about.

It pisses me off that people are letting MM judge the movie for them just because he works in the comic book industry. Bul****. MM is just another writer with an EGO(like Alex Ross) and he`s being a fool to judge the movie before even seeing it. If after i see this movie, i think it sucks, i`ll say that. But from what i`ve seen and heard till now, it will make me cry with joy.

You know whats funny, it seems that Rob is masking his complaints for a Returns in relation to their being no Supervillian but at the same time praising STM?

Millar's an idiot.

I like some of his comic stuff (probably most of it), but that blog made me angry. The reasons he cited for putting the movie down seemed like a joke.

Maybe Harry Knowles should bet him a thousand dollars the flick will be good :)

LOL Only a mad can say that X-Men3 seems a good movie :D

The problem with SR is only the role of the kid (but I'm sure that we'll accept it). SR will be a High-Quality movie.
X3 really seems a low-quality superhero movie a la Daredevil.

This is great. Wasn't there a thread where a comic book artist was givig praise for the movie and everyone was all excited about that. But, here we have a respected writer saying he is worried and everyone thinks the guy is an idiot? That is just great. Objectivity is not a common occurence around here is it?

Because, it basically amounts to "I'm worried because they focus on clark kent and theres no supervillian"

Nah, that's not it, at least for me...

It's his reasoning. I simply do not agree with it at all. I think his complaints are shaky at best. Respected writer or not, it still comes off to me like the fanboys who start a thread with "The trailer sucked...Routh looks like a kid...I want to see a supervillain..etc" I really just don't agree with him.

I will admit that idiot was a pretty strong damn word, but frankly I'm kinda tired of Millar and his opinions. He and others think too much of him, IMO.

That's pretty much it,you can only have a positive opinion on SR before seeing it not a negative one

I was watching Batman Begins again, and I realized how well it works when the villians are real and human.

Superman may be an alien, but in this film...hes very human (possibly more real than any previous Superman portrayal)....meaning a non-geek audience would be able to enjoy the film without being alienated.

I think their approach was right...build up an audience first with a very human movie (bringing Supes back to the bigscreen)....and then break into more sci-fi based comicbook stuff for the future films (supervillians like Brainiac, Metallo etc....)

You are right, the Ratner/MCG movie was better

Lex--> Alien CIA agent (a lot better than the Gene Hackman style Lex!!)

Krypton---> Not exploded (Amazing!!)

Kryptonian invasion (A lot of "hits!!" Let's rock baby!!)

Superman death (ooh very cool  )

And the suit?
---
Q: What was the concept for the costume, was it faithful to the traditional outfit or a different take?

BH: Very different take, I cannot say too much about the design; but it was kinda' Tim Burton 'Batman' like.

Q: You say the suit was more 'Batman' - Rubber?

BH: Yes, the suit was foam-rubber latex. I say it looked like 'Batman' because of the way that it was designed (muscles, etc.).
---

LOL

Millar, bashers, use your brains!! :D

That doesn't make sense, there were plenty of posters in that other comic book writers thread mimicking the same sentiments, "who cares what this guy says..." Both parties are wrong, both sides should be able to give their opinion.

Mark Millar's opinion is worth no more than anybody else on these boards, no is it worth any less.

^^^^^^^^^
He never said he wanted those movies he actually said they were lucky escapes avoiding them, don't twist his words just to try and bring someone down that has as much right to be disappointed as you do to be hyped

Then why is it that everyone that doesn't like Singers vision is a hack or in fans case an idiot ?

The other thread had what ? matt ? and maybe 2 others ?

I haven't heard/ read??? anyone say that Millier's opinion is any more important than ours. In fact it seems that some people think his opinion is less important.

He has a right to his opinion, just like that dumb ass, sell his soul for money Alex Ross.

I love you. And the fact we're both Spidey's fans help make you a plus in my book. :D :spidey:

Ross always seemed like an egotistical prick to me, but Millar is cool. Since I respect him, I don't have any problem with what he says. It's just his opinion people. He did make some valid points too.

Ya Ross sucks (except at drawing).

The guy can draw like no other, but I'm not sure why he would bash Returns the way he did. Oh well, I'm glad we don't have his "billboard" S for the movie. :)

Except when it comes to his Spidey and Hulk references....which were wrong, not even an opinion...

Or his leotard ballarina suit...that stuff should stay in the comics.
