Superman Returns My problem with SUperman Returns.

Firstly, I think it's quite robust to suggest that Singer 'failed' with this movie. It's certainly very accomplished and well crafted and you can definitely see that's he's approached it with passion and respect.

However:

Kate Bosworth was completely miscast. We all know she's a great actor, but she's far too young to play the ballsy, worldly-wise Miss Lane.
Brandon Routh simply didn't have enough to say. Most of the time I got the feeling he was on display, almost like a model in an after-shave ad. This is not to completely dismiss his performance, which I think was ultimately charming... He did Christopher Reeve proud.

I thought the film-makers, namely Singer, Dougherty, Harris & Peters, were far too concerned with paying homage to Richard Donner's vision than was necessary. The fact is most kids today haven't seen Superman I & II and are more familiar with the mythos as depicted in Smallville. I feel they did the legend an injustice by just making a great movie, rather than making a great Superman movie.

Finally, two words for the sequel:

Superman is a warrior/champion. Superman isn't Romeo (even though Superman stands side by side with this guy in being just a few of the most recognizable couples in history) and while it's great to emphasize the romantic aspect of Superman and Lois, it should never be the core of what Superman should truly stand for, which is a hero. Superman is earth's greatest hero, it's champion, he's the ultimate superhero and should be treated and respected as such in all his big movie interpretations. I also hated the tightness of the suit and Kate Bosworth had too much screentime as opposed to Superman (and she wasn't all that hot, sort of like Katie Holmes in Batman Begins). In the sequel, there should be:

1. More action, because Superman's the first and the ultimate action superhero.

2. Superman is Superman, not emotional-man (couldn't think of a better name). Mentally and physically, Superman is the epitome of strength because of his indestructible will and unmatched feats of strength in sheer physical power (focus should be on a villain that can surpass Superman in this level, so Superman won't let his powers do the work for him.)

3. Less focus on Lois and more on Superman. (I think Lois had more screentime than Superman in this film.)

4. Loosen up the suit, so Brandon Routh can actually breath.

5. More influence from the comics. 70 years worth of comics and Warner Bros. decides on a rehash just to play it safe. Well, DON'T.
6. lois lane treating clark like a fool and didn't care/miss him a bit for his 5 years missing.

hehe.
But is it?

The three dimensions are x, y and z. x and y are forwards/backwards and upwards/downwards and z is depth. A 2 dimensional character does nothing more than do things, ie going backwards or forwards, no real depth. Superman in SR had depth because we saw how he reacted to things; Tearful eyes after hearing Lois does not love him, anger when he sees his crystals are missing, anger when he sees the suffering on the news. This means there is more than just a 'these things happen' part to the story, there is a "these things happen and Superman reacts like this" part to the story.

So it cannot be argued that Superman wasn't three dimensional. You COULD argue that you couldn't connect with the character, as that is a factor decided by the individual viewer.

Who am I to argue or disagree with you, Zen?
hehehe.

This bothered me as well. Lois was such a beyotch to Clark in this movie and she was just whiny overall in the movie. I didn't find her character too likeable. She introduces Clark to Richard by saying, "This is Clark, well, he's Clark", she gives a beyotchy look/wave to Clark in the elevator, she slams Clark's stapler down when giving it back to him and she doesn't put forth much of an effort to see how Clark is doing or help him find a place to stay in. Add to that, her getting all whiny when she drops her purse and when she's in Perry White's office and doesn't get to cover the story she wants to(flailing her arms in the process). I guess her actions can be attributed to the stress of having Superman back in her life but I couldn't help but find her just mean and annoying at times.

the major is...
lois lane will never love clark kent in this SR universe. but the creepy part is that they had done 'it'.

which could be a good thing. she doesnt care about him . if she doesnt care than it is harder to notice that he is superman.

And speaks a lot about how she's morwe attracted to Super's muscles, suit and powers than the real man behind all of that.

Agreed, they got Lois's character all wrong, and she was totally inconsistent with the Margot Kidder version.

she doesnt care about him .

But Lois DOES care about Clark. She doesn't love him, but she at least cares for him as a friend. Watch the first two movies again. Not only did Singer screw up the continuity, he SERIOUSLY screwed up the characterisation.

Then they really screwed it up in STM, SII and SR.

On the contrary, the shallowness of Kidder's Lois is depicted here only in a more harsh way (due to the thinbgs that happened to her in the last 5 years). Lois never cared too much for Clark, merely told things to him to not destroy his self-steem "yes, you're a valuable person blah blah."

In SR, Clark goes away for 5 years and during that time, Lois had to suffer the loss of Superman and now she's with another man. That's enough for her to displace Clark out fo her life since she has now too much to worry and has no room to save Clark's self-steem.
